I always love people who want something for nothing. People who don't value the work of others. $49 to update a program as powerful as Parallels is chump change. If it is too much for you, you don't need Parallels. People are entitled to be paid for their labors.
I always love people who assume that complaining about prices is about complaining about the price tag instead of the value written on it.

And the price doesn't change that I need the software. What crazy assumption is that?
If people found a way to charge for the air you breathe it could be made expensive, but you'd still need it.
Now granted, this is an overblown comparison, but just so that you get the underlying principle.

I have Fusion Pro and Parallels.
I am not a fan of the yearly subscription model.

I did have Parallels for the iPad, purchased via a deal for about $15 a year.

They just keep breaking parallels every time Apple update their OS. So, as long as Apple are giving us free updates, we'll have to keep paying the $50 parallels tax to use our windows only programs.

Happens every year - and yep, I'm sick of it too!
I'm with them since V6, but this is enough... They are thieves, they keep breaking parallels every time.

It seems so cheap... the worst SAAS model in a "buy your licence" costume. (At least they are being transparent now with the 49 Year fee).

Moving to Virtual Box.

For people complaining of upgrade pricing. eBay is awash in $25 P10 copies. Pick one up and you get automatic upgrade to P11 under their tech guarantee program.

From their website: "The Parallels Tech Guarantee has ended as of October 15, 2014 for eligible purchases."

As a non-developer, is there really any advantage as to why I should choose the subscription and pay $49 versus just paying the one-time upgrade fee of $49?

From their FAQ, if you bought it before mid-July (forget the actual date) and October (upcoming) - they will email you the activation code and download link. I got Parallels 10 just 2 weeks ago; so I had the same question.

Do you have a link to the FAQ?

Did you mean bought it AFTER mid-July?

How about $49 after only having the product two months? I bought my copy of Parallels Desktop 10 with some hardware from OWC around the end of May, and received it and activated it around the middle of June. Less than two months after actually getting access to the software, they release a new version that'll cost me $50 to upgrade. Considering the difficulties I'm having getting my Boot Camp partition running Windows 10 to work in Parallels Desktop 10 and how they've dealt with my complaint, I'll think twice about doing business with them in the future.

I just missed the cut-off for a free upgrade by a couple weeks. I'm in contact with customer support, but they're holding firm so far. Any suggestions on how I can get upgraded to 11? I've only used the dang thing twice since I paid $50, and now they want another $50 for version 11.

I gave up on Parallels three years ago when they started embedding ads into their product (for paying customers, no less!)

I've seen a few people mention ads but I switched from VMware Fusion to Parallels when Parallels was at version 10 and I have not seen a single ad anywhere in Parallels. Where are people seeing these ads?

I sprung for the upgrade. Windows 10 is surprisingly fast with Parallels 11. I never used Windows 8 so it seemed like a waste but I will use this with Windows 10.

According to the posts on the Parallels forums, at least the following two features have been removed from the regular version and are in the Pro version:

1) Rollback mode
2) Creating linked clones

juls

4) Vagrant provider

The latter particularly sucks. For those arguing that the devs deserve to be paid every year for their work, really ... moving a working feature from a standard license to a subscription (i.e. rental) license is not dev work that deserves to be paid for.

Well, one major downside of the Pro subscription license is that it's a rental only ... as Parallels confirmed by tweet, it will be disabled completely if your subscription expires.

So if you want to keep the same version for longer than a year without paying again, don't go for the Pro license ....

Yeah, except this is developed in Russia by developers who earn about 1/3 what you would pay engineers in the USA. At this rate, they're making a *huge* profit.

It would be fine if the upgrade was optional, or it was clearly stated as a requirement when you make your initial purchase, but they purposefully cripple older versions so you are forced to upgrade if you want to keep using it. It's the anti-consumer Quicken model of software.
