I have never seen an upgrade price so steep! :O I bought parallels 8 a month ago!!!

oh well.. stuck on windows 7 here...no real reason to upgrade is there??

It is amazing how much money people are prepared to invest to run Windows on a Mac. I think for most it would be much cheaper to buy a secondary machine instead of paying their yearly Parallels-tax...

I don't like Parallels' policy of not patching old versions when they're broken by an OS X upgrade (its not quite the 'every year' that people claim but its still annoying) - however, they've done a really good job of integration between OS X and Windows and its a lot more convenient than juggling two machines (esp. if you want to use it on a laptop).

You pay money for convenience.

Parallels is a great implementation of a virtual machine but it is APPALLINGLY slow. When I went MAC I first built a little Intel ATOM based machine to run Word and Excel but after a while I just switched to Office for MAC with only a few compatibility problems. More with Excel than with Word. Still have to use the Windows machine for Excel with macros.

If it was faster Parallels would be a great solution.

Meh - the student price, which I technically am, is cheaper than the upgrade.

This is what irks me. There doesnt seem to be much logic behind it and it feels like a bit of a slap in the face to people who have been buying their product for years on end only to see support sweeped out from under them like the proverbial rug at every subsequent launch.

I thought iCloud was only for Mac App Store apps. How can Parallels 9 access iCloud storage if its not distributed through the app store?

you know that iCloud is the cloud-system of OSX and you have also access in Windows, no...?

It doesn't use the app store to distribute anything. it's basically like dropbox, skydrive, etc.

it's also included in apps such as iWorks, and co. but not only.

So I got it installed. It's definitely faster.
Could you take a gander at what feels faster specifically, and by how much? I don't really care about sleep or shut down times as much as I do just using the virtual machine itself.

I'd rather go for the native option rather than the "not quite so bad anymore" option. With solid state drives, rebooting isn't all that slow or inconvenient.

I should have been clearer. I think the biggest argument for doing it in a VM is if you're a multitasker. Obviously, if that isn't important, Boot Camp will certainly be the way to go.

If you whant to play still dent upgrade!Sounds an mice does not work at all.

????????

Parallels is the fastest of all the Mac virtualization options. Are you using a recent version? And on a SSD? It's certainly not native speed after a while (although a fresh OS installation usually does feel alms that fast), but it's not horrendous either.

This. Their upgrade "policies" are pretty ******... If you bought it within the past 15 days? You get the upgrade free. But more than 15 days ago? Guess how f'cked you are? I bought Parallels last month, and now it looks like I get to pay out again to have W8.1 support.
You're probably going to need Parallels 9 if you want to move to Mavericks anyway based on their past history of releasing new versions for OS X upgrades.

Only reason for you to upgrade is if you want to be able to upgrade OS X to Mavericks and still use Parallels.

FYI: Parallels 8 works in Mavericks

Happy news! :)

Virtualization makes plenty of sense to those of us who multitask and love the mac interface but need to use certain Windows programs too. As a web developer, I like to be able to code on my Mac, test in Safari, Chrome and Firefox using my Mac but being able to tab to IE is an absolute necessity. It's also good to know that I'm using the same version of Office applications that my corporation utilizes.

As for the Power Nap questions, I imagine it works directly with Parallels and not your actual Windows applications. Meaning that when your Parallels window is covered, Power Nap is only talking to Parallels to determine which resources to use. Parallels probably has a blanket setting for all applications - I doubt that they continue to run dissimilarly.

Thanks for the info about Parallels 8 and Mavericks. I cannot wait for proper Multi-Monitor support! :)

Also, does Parallels 9 do anything about the ugly red taskbar icon yet? At least give us a greyscale option!

Think i'll wait until Parallels 9 gets into a Fall Bundle, like has occurred for the past few years.

Virtualbox is a good alternative, but the performance isn't as good as Parallels - especially for graphical demanding apps - especially gaming.

It is perfect for me... I only use windows to use a tax software once a year... Other than that, I'm Mac-only

How come i cant find the upgrade anywhere ? ive been running, and upgrading, parallels since version 6, i cant find a peep of 9 anywhere

Does it support virtual appliances in the Open Virtualization Format(ovf)? NO!
Does it support Linked Clones of snapshots? NO!
Does it support Vagrant? NO!

So, in my opinion, it's a toy, because it isn't apt for professional usage. Even Virtualbox has this features.

Lol, I love it when people pull out a few random features the product doesn't have that not everybody needs, then say it isn't for "professional usage" or "real work" because it lacks said features. As though there aren't business uses that are lightweight.

This looks really great

I have always loved parallels, and they do a great job.

Too bad my only purpose for running windows these days is for gaming. And that I would never want to do in a VM.

A bit off topic, but I'm running Parallels 8 with Windows XP x64 installed and I was wondering if I need to install an antivirus under Windows to prevent my Mac from developing a virus obtained by using Windows in the VM? I uninstalled almost every pre-bundled Microsoft program including Internet Explorer and anything else that would connect to the Internet so it seems safe without one but can anyone vouch for this? Thanks! Just wanna protect OS X as much as possible.

Upgrade price is too high

Upgrade pricing on Parallels Desktop 9 for users of version 7 or 8 is $49.99, with standard retail pricing set at $79.99 for regular users and $39.99 for students. Customers who purchased Parallels Desktop 8 on or after August 15 can also receive a free upgrade to version 9.

I've just bought it in July for $49 (within MU bundle, but all other apps unneeded), and now they say i'm to pay $50 again to have this upgrade? Same as people, bought 7 two years ago...? Is it a joke? –*I'll better go with other (you know which ones) options to get and use it, should i ever need it (v.9), though...

You mean a company needs to earn money every year??? Oh the shame, they charge for a new version!!

Whine about $40-80 per year and then pay $150/month in cell phone bills. Tell me again who the thieves are?

I've played Battlefield 2 using Bootcamp and Parallels. Not much difference really. Granted, BF2 is a game made in 2005.
I keep both a bootcamp partition and Parallels around just to try out new PC programs. Both work really well, and for non-3D applications Parallels does just as well without the reboot. Plus copy/paste between environments is handy.

I've played around with VirtualBox and Fusion. I prefer Parallels, but I will admit that is simply because I am familiar with it the most.

But no, you don't *HAVE* to upgrade. You can wait 2 years and then upgrade just like you did this time.

For work stuff(which I do lot of on my 2012 mba), I couldn't be happier.

I am not sure what others are using parallels for but for me to run win 7 conveniently to get my work done is more than enough for me. I have no plan to get parallels 9 at this point though but I am sure when it gets slow, I will go for new parallels. I cannot imagine running my mba without parallels. For me, dual booting is not an option since I want both to be up at the sametime.(vpn to access work and still free to do my stuff on same laptop. Best of both world).
