Separate 3G and 4g models? Sounds very iffy to me. And an 8gb model? Again, I'm skeptical.

More likely: 16/32/64, sprint/Verizon/AT&T/wifi, black/white. That's 3x4x2, 24 models.

Wildcard, but perhaps the 'best' variant is a Retina capable 4G one?

Do you really think they'd make a retina and non-retina model, with the retina only being available in 4G? Sure the 4th gen iPod touch with a retina display has a much smaller screen, but it will also have twice the storage. That would be a very odd way of doing things. I can't imagine them introducing any new products that aren't retina, excluding maybe the new iMac update and a couple MacBook Air updates.

If the 8GB is gonna be as cheap as rumored, I might actually give this a try. I love my current iPad, but there are times I wish it'd be just a bit smaller...
It's the barebones 8GB iPad mini model that makes the $299 32GB iPod touch possible. Some were wondering how they'd justify to people to keep buying iPods... just give them more space. I'd still go iPad. I've got the 2nd Best iPod in the world... it's a 64GB iPhone 4S!

If there's an 8Gb model, they should throw in a micro sd card slot. C'mon, Apple. Please!

They won't, though. Because then that will be the only one that sells since you can get a 32gb micro sd card for 20 bucks online.

iPad Mini Price Speculation

Will be a tight fit so as not to impinge on iPad and iPad Touch sales. Really what we will now have is an iPad Touch/iPad in 3 sizes, 4", 7.8" & 10.1".

A Guess:

8GB - $299
16GB - $349
32GB - $449
64GB - $549

3G - add $99
4G LTE - add $149

Good to see more options, but ...

I gotta admit, I'm starting to shake my head and wonder how much sense it really makes for Apple to maintain this many versions of essentially the same product.

I mean, if they would have only designed the iPad so the back cover was possible to unsnap, they could have made custom memory upgrade modules and cellular upgrade modules for them.

Then you'd only have to sell a black and a white version of the iPad mini and regular size iPad. Buy one with 16GB and wi-fi only as the standard configuration and add your choice of upgrade modules if you want anything over and above that. Since they'd have to be custom boards, Apple could still charge enough mark-up on them so they'd make the same amount of money they make now on upgraded models -- but they wouldn't be stuck in situations where retail stores are out of models people desire, and have too much stock of ones that are selling too slowly for them.

I'm gonna be getting one of Best models for my wife for Christmas/Anniversary. Gonna be great! She always complains of our iPad's weight! Glad to see that Apple is addressing the smaller tablet arena with lots of models. We call that "throwing down" where I come from!

Finally the large size phone the Android crowd has been waiting for.

7.85 inch, easy to put into the pants pockets and LTE to boot.

Take that Samsung SIII

I think it's possible that the current iPod Touch setup might be an inspiration for the iPad mini. We have 2 "low end" Touchs and 2 "high end" Touchs. Perhaps we'll see two "low end" Minis with iPad 2 style screens and two "high end" Minis with retina displays.

Might start at 199 or 249 and then break into iPad pricing

IE (in USD)

199 or 249
299
349
399
449
499

With the rumored Nexus 7 32 GB coming in at $249 (which would be a much better deal and likely superior specs) I really dont see how Apple can go any higher then that on the 8 GB model. But at $199 it would blow the Kindle Fire our of the water.

That being said the new Touch starts at $299 and even though its 32 GB I dont see Apple putting a lower price tag on the base Mini.

What? That's about the most un-Apple thing that could happen nowadays. Regular people have no interest in doing that anyway.

If we're going for pie in the sky why not snap on fronts for the different colors too?

I'll believe the pricing and inventory leaks when the thing is actually announced, you know considering NO retailer will have this information as fact until it's been announced...

Oh and 8GB is dead on arrival IMO.

I stand by my prediction, IF they launch an ipad mini, no invitations have been sent for the apparent press announcement yet.. then it will start from the same price as the new iPod Touch. AT LEAST.

That's a lot of SKUs

So is that too many to be an iPad mini, but too few to be an iPad mini and a Lightning connector new (new) iPad?

IMO there is no way we see a 3G model. We've moved on - cellular means lte now. The 24 models are 3 carriers or wifi, black or white, and three capacities. So 4x2x3, 24 options, exactly like the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5, but with a wifi only option.

Why wouldn't:

Good, Better Best be about size (8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB).
The four different numbers be about color.
And A and B be WiFi only and cellular?

According to the list, the iPad will be available in four basic device variants that presumably correspond to different capacities: P101, P103, P105, and P107. The set of four variants suggests that Apple may be releasing the iPad mini with capacities ranging from 8 GB up to 64 GB.

Uh, I'd guess you have the capacities and connectivities backwards:

P101: WiFi only
P103: GSM (USA) + LTE (Bands 4 and 17)
P105: CDMA + LTE (Bands 1, 3, 5, 13, 25)
P107: GSM (world) + LTE (Bands 1, 3, 5)

...just as it is on the iPhone 5.

Then:

Good = 16GB
Better = 32GB
Best = 64GB

...which makes more sense. Maybe 8, 16, 32 to keep costs down.

I agree A & B is likely black & white.

Why not? They still sell the iPad 2 non Retina along with the iPad 3.

Because "cellular" requires two or three models for different carriers. Wifi/cellular has to be the 3 or the four, not the A/B.

Am I alone in thinking that if this is true that Apple will be discontinuing the iPad 2??? Have they been so surprised by the buzz surrounding the Nexus and Kindle 7" form factor that they will concentrate their efforts on this new size with the new Ipad remaining at the 9.7" and Retina display?? Should be interesting next week! :D

I'm with you. I think the iPad 2 will be relegated to the refurbished only pile a la original iPad. Way too many "buy new" iPads.
