I'd point out that P101 and P103 also have "BTR" in their part numbers, while P105 and P107 do not.

I'd, therefore, speculate thusly:

  • P105 and P107 are Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular respectively.
  • A and B are Black and White.
  • Good/Better/Best are storage capacity — either 8/16/32GB, or 16/32/64GB (though I'd lean towards the former).
  • BTR is an abbreviation of "Better".
  • P101 and P103, would be Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular, with Retina Displays, making them "Better" than P105 and P107.
Thoughts?

As for pricing, I'd speculate starting at $249.
+ $50 for more storage.
+ $100 for Cellular.
+ $100 for Retina.

Price points would be:
$249 – 8GB
$349 – 8GB + Cellular, or 8GB + Retina
$449 – 8GB + Cellular + Retina

$299 – 16GB
$399 – 16GB + Cellular, or 16GB + Retina (Price of 16GB iPad 2, Wi-Fi)
$499 – 16GB + Cellular + Retina (Price of 16GB iPad 3, Wi-Fi)

$349 – 32GB
$449 – 32GB + Cellular, or 32GB + Retina
$549 – 32GB + Cellular + Retina

Which keeps everything below the price of the 32GB Wi-Fi only iPad 3.

("Hey! I could get a 32GB iPad... Or I could get a 32GB iPad Mini with a Retina Display and 4G, and save $50!")

Thoughts

I like the idea of multiple iPad minis. Maybe the options are colored backs like the iPod touch. Maybe better and best have to do with display resolutions? Maybe the the best version has 3G and retina display?

I have an iPad first gen with the unlimited data plan. I'm grandfathered in, so I am hoping I can transfer it to the new iPad mini! Cause I am a big guy with big hands, and this puppy would make the perfect large screen smart phone! :)

Seriously. I make free calls with VoIP apps on my first gen iPad all the time. It's great, but a little too big. If the iPad mini comes with 3G or 4G and I can transfer my unlimited iPad data plan to it...who needs a smartphone? Heh heh heh.

Really looking forward to next week. I will order one of em the moment they are announced. Yeah baby! Yeah! :-D

According to the list, the iPad will be available in four basic device variants that presumably correspond to different capacities: P101, P103, P105, and P107. The set of four variants suggests that Apple may be releasing the iPad mini with capacities ranging from 8 GB up to 64 GB.

Not really. It is just a likely there are as many radio variances as memory configurations. For instance in the USA the following would make sense.

P101 -- wifi
P103 -- ATT ( their variant of LTE)
P105 -- Verizon ( their variant of LTE with some overlapp with other country's LTE deployments) )
P017 -- Tmobile ( what the merged T-mobile-Metro PCS is moving to in LTE along with some overlap with a different set of other country's LTE deployments )

That strategy would allow Apple to hit a wider set of worldwide LTE markets once the wordwide roll-out was complete.

In that context Good , Better , Best go back to representing memory..... just like all previous iOS devices.

A and B represent Black and White ( like with larger iPad)

Now weather the memory goes 8/16/32 or 16/32/64 is unclear. I think some folks want to invent 4 memory configs so can roll out some sub $249 model at 8GB. That's not likely. The iPad mini is likely to start at or above $299. Four memory price points at Apple's typical increments for memory would be hard to fit in between there and the $599 ( or $499) level. While there may be a small overlap in iPad pricing, it is unlikely to be a large one. Too many memory slots gets in the way. Too low an initial price starting point nukes Apple's profit margins (extremely unlikely).

Note also that the radio variances don't increase costs. It is largely the same digital radio infrastructure with slight tweaks to the amps. That isn't going to swing costs at the prices Apple charges for 4G LTE radios.

Best Better, Good Better ? 24 SKU's !!! ?

So contrary to popular belief, Apple has actually turned into a hybrid monster of Microsoft & Samsung then ;):p j/k

Seriously 24 seems ridiculous and surely this is contradicted by the supposed european price leak which did not peg anything like 24 SKU's.

Either way, if Apple do sell a 64GB with Wifi and Retina Display (after my ipad 3 I cant go back for reading text & ibooks - but do want the reduced size) then I'll have a black one on order quicker than a nun rolling down a hill....

Uh, I'd guess you have the capacities and connectivities backwards:

P101: WiFi only
P103: GSM (USA) + LTE (Bands 4 and 17)
P105: CDMA + LTE (Bands 1, 3, 5, 13, 25)
P107: GSM (world) + LTE (Bands 1, 3, 5)

...just as it is on the iPhone 5.

Then:

Good = 16GB
Better = 32GB
Best = 64GB

...which makes more sense. Maybe 8, 16, 32 to keep costs down.

I agree A & B is likely black & white.

P101 and P103 has BTR next to them, which may mean LTE.
That leaves me with the question what is the difference between BTR and non BTR models. Ex: P101 vs P105

Good - Wifi Only
Better - Wifi + Cellular + GPS
Best - Wifi + Cellular + GPS + Retina (Maybe)??

Doubtful, but who will know until it is announced.

FYI, I've updated the article a couple of times, and it now looks like some of these may be a Lightning-equipped full-size iPad revision.

So 12 of these would be the iPad mini and 12 would be the full-size iPad. Given the origin of these numbers, a CDMA version is not included in the list (and there are gaps in the sequence of part numbers to accommodate additional models). So that means in the U.S. there could actually be 36 new models.

18 iPad mini configurations: 3 capacities X 3 variants (Wi-Fi, GSM, CDMA) X 2 colors

18 iPad configurations: 3 capacities X 3 variants (Wi-Fi, GSM, CDMA) X 2 colors

duh the prices have leaked already starting at 249€ incl. 19 % vat to 649€ for the 64GB wifi+data version

Yeah, I can't believe people haven't all seen this yet and committed the different prices to memory.

In Europe there will be only 16 different versions:
8/16/32/64 GB x WiFi/Cellular x Black/White
Mediamarkt has got these in its system.
http://www.schimanke.com/archives/3901-iPad-mini-Preise,-Groessen,-Konfigurationen.html

US will then probably have

8/16/32/64 GB x WiFi/Cellular/differentCellular x Black/White hence 24 different versions.

Prices start at 250 and every upgrade adds 100, ending at 650. (Euros, but dollaars will be comparable.)

It would make more sense for a full size iPad update alongside with the iPad mini. Wasnt the reasons of the iPhone 5 having more than one cellular model the fact that it couldnt fit more than one cellular chip inside? Something that shouldnt be a problem with iPads. so 12 models for iPad mini 12 models for iPad fullsized. It would explain the change in naming convention with iPad(3).

Pricing already leaked, 8gb/wifi only is the "cheap" kindle fire killer.

Nice analysis. The most interesting item is the suggestion of two display variants, if _that_ happens, I vote you get a "Predictor of the Year" badge :D

A larger range than that, I'd say. If they have at least 3 or more storage configurations, and at least 2 or more wireless configurations, then I doubt they'll stay within a $200 price range.
True.
Figure $100 for each size increment and then a $100 premium for Cell connectivity andyou could range from a 16Gb WiFi only model for $199 to a 64Gb WiFi/Cell version for $499. A good range that would cover all the bases. This could reshape the whole tablet market.

Alex, I'll take a WiFi only 32Gb model for $299 please.

Media Markt doesn't know anything. That's simply a placeholder in their system...Apple hasn't seeded retailers with pricing or exact model descriptions yet.
