If your friend is a guy, he will understand and should.

If your friend is a girl, then make up a reason like "last minute dinner with grandparents", or "had to take a friend to <location of your choice> on short notice and he/she doesn't have a ride>".

The advice to bang both of them sounds more sensible than this.

I'm sorry, I wouldn't understand. I'd be p***ed. If you would blow off a friend for some girl you just met, you aren't much of a friend.

Oh, that's neat- lie.

From the sounds of things, the OP hasn't seen or interacted much with this friend in several years, so is there really much difference?

That makes the the difference even bigger. Let's see- hang out with an old friend I have not seen in years, but have history with, or hang out with girl I don't even know?

Doesn't seem to be a tough decision, but that's just me.

I guess for me it would come down to two things:

  1. Which person has the most potential to be around long-term?
  2. Which person did I make plans with first?

If the answer to both questions is the same person, then the choice becomes easier. If the two are different, then it becomes a matter of my (potential) long term happiness or my word.
