I have see a trend where more and more people are securing their phones. I bounce back and forth between using a passcode and not.

My entires team (20 people) uses passcodes.

Do you or do you not?
Passcode. And adjust the Passcode Lock time to be immediately and 15 minutes. To me anything shorter than 5 minutes is annoying and anything longer than 15 is too risky., however some people prefer the higher security of the shorter times.

Why not? It's just pure laziness if u don't.

That is an invalid statement. I have tried 6 plus times and found it to be at the best 75% dependable. It would not work at the worst times and in the end it is not worth it to me.

I laugh as some here say that theirs has never failed to work, sorry but find that hard to believe but if you love Apple that much to lie for them . . . . .:p

You saying that it's not worth it to you is why it is pure laziness to not use one.

If not the TouchID, you could always slide to unlock and enter a passcode.

I wouldn't say mine never fails to work, but, on the few times it does fail (maybe 10% of the time), it gets it on the 'Try Again.' At most, I may have to enter my code manually once a month.

If yours fails more than that, take it to Apple and have it checked.

Wouldn't a poll make more sense?

Considering how many phones are stolen through "Apple picking", as they say, none of those things would really help with that if it came to it.

Yep, and wasn't there a thread just this week where a guy had his phone stolen right out of his hand?

Plus, apparently he got the phone back thanks to having a passcode and find-my-iphone; scumbag DFU restored it, apparently contacted him via email to ransom the phone, and got taken down by the cops.

When you say 75% does that mean 1st attempt success? If so, is your second attempt success much higher? I mean, I sometimes have to touch it twice or even 3 times before it recognizes my print. But it's not that often, and it is still totally worth it!

It might be for you but after several times where is would not recognize either of my thumbs I gave up. I would tuch my thumb in every direction possible and nothing. When I am driving down the road, I do not need this cr^p. I want to pick up my phone and be able to use it with any hassle.

Choice is good and if it works for you, great! BUT, people saying that the ones who do not use it are lazy or stupid, well I can not agree!

Perhaps this will help: https://www.macrumors.com/2014/02/28/touch-id-iphone-5s-fade/

I must admit prior to TouchID the only time I used Passcode was when I was out and about (particularly in places I'd never been before.)

Admittedly TouchID can be hit and miss BUT it's on all of the time, now. Saves having to type in passwords for iTunes and App Store purchases.

If it's not functioning then u should get it replaced. It should not be as bad as u describe. Wait for the patch and see if it solves the issue. But for me, it's awesome. I have zero problems. It misses once in a while on the first try, but I'd say I'm above 85% success. And near 100% on the second. People who don't use a password (finger or 4 digit) ARE lazy. It's stupid not to use it. It would be like having a debit card without a pin #... And if the FP scanner it's not working, use a 4 digit password until u get a replacement phone.

There you go calling people "stupid" or "lazy" if they do not use this feature.

My phone had to be replaced several months ago for another reason and it still is not dependable after several additional tries.

Again it is your choice and I am glad it is "awesome" for you but it is not longer worth the trouble, not just for me but for many. Try not to let it bother you.

85%? Really? Enjoy!

Not using some sort of security is crazy. Even if there is nothing sensitive on the phone, at least have some sort of security so no-one can use it.

To not use security on a smart phone is just irresponsible. To those people who say they always have their phone in their site and stuff, we are human and accidents happen. It just takes one "oops" and your info AND you friends and family info is gone. If you don't do it for you, do it for you family and loved ones who email you pictures, their phone and email info on your phone, and others stuff.

I wouldn't if I didn't have a 5S.

Data is backed up and can be wiped remotely if the device is stolen. Not a concern. I have nothing worth hiding on my phone. If people want to go through my selfies on my camera roll or read my Twitter, feel free. :p

If a cop sees you in my neck of the woods, you'll get a hefty ticket. Having said that, I can unlock the phone quite easily using touch id. Maybe at some point in time, you can get your issue squared away. It really is a time saver.

On older iPhones I sometimes didn't use one because I preferred having fast access to my phone at all times.

For those with a 5S, Touch ID has pretty much eliminated any reason not to use one.

I'm unfamiliar with this "law". Do have any links on it? Where are you located?

It's stupid or lazy to not use it IF it is functioning properly. Obviously your device isn't working...And your second device isn't working either. So get it replaced again. And yeah, 8.5 times out of 10 it works perfectly. The other 1.5 times I have to hit it a second time. I think that's pretty awesome for a hi-tech first gen feature. AND...Apple has already said that an update is coming very soon to address some issues. So im assuming it will even get better. This is totally expected with a feature like this. And I think Apple did an awesome job with it out of the box.

And as far as being stupid or lazy for not using some type of security on your phone...IT IS! why wouldn't you? And even if the FP scanner doesn't work, just go back to punching in a 4 digit passcode. Is that too hard? Then your phone is secure. I cant think of one other reason why anyone wouldn't use a passcode....Other then it being a PIA to punch in 4 digits every time...Aka lazy!

New York, what state are you in?

None of them. :)

edit : I didn't mean to make "law" sound sarcastic by using quotes. It just seemed a bit silly to be required to lock your phone. A thief would have already stolen it by the time he/she realizes its locked. Then they'd just throw it away as a last resort before returning it or whatever....

edit edit : Just realized what was going on here. Didn't see the topic change....My fault....

There is no law to lock the phone. Many states do not allow you to hold a phone to your ear and talk on the phone while driving!! Statistics show it is worse than drunk driving!!!
