So GGG posted about a new patch 3.13.1e Coming soon (monday I believe)

tons of people on the forum are complaining about performance issues since 3.13 so it’s not just macOS related.

sadly, unless they just decided not to mention it, the 3.13.1e Patch doesn’t seem to improve any performance issues related to FPS.

This was their last list of Mac known problems
Known Issues: (last modified 2/15/21)
  • Game crashing with M1 based systems.
  • Helmet attachment slot missing.
  • While running around, you may occasionally see a black tile on the edge of the screen briefly. This is an engine quirk that occurs with the Windows version also, but it's more pronounced in our current Mac version.
  • Window Resolution/Size is too small when opening the game.
  • Pressing the Esc key in Fullscreen exits fullscreen mode.
  • Horizontally resizing the client window can sometimes cause a crash.
  • Cannot rotate while using Channelling skills with RMB or MMB.
The 3.13.1e patch notes you mentioned fixes the following
Mac Improvements
  • Fixed a bug where you couldn't rotate while using Channelling skills if the skill was assigned to the right or middle mouse button.
  • Fixed a bug where Hideouts couldn't be imported or exported.
  • Fixed a bug where the client window buttons would no longer function after attempting to import or export a Hideout.
  • Fixed a client crash that could occur when resizing the client window.
So at least they appear to fix that annoying horizontal resize bug maybe? Highlighted in bold, the ones that match known issues.

But what about the issues they didn’t mention - like how we can’t even select resolution or dedicated graphics processing unit (GPU). And how dynamic resolution does not work at all on macOS.

I'd assume that's due to their 3rd party libraries. Same as with the M1. I remember a thread discussion (was either reddit or the support forum) where they said they're waiting for something in the Mac client. It looks like whatever they put into there doesn't work very well so far. Only time will tell. I do wonder though, with PoE2 on the horizon (now targeting 2022 release?), are they ever going to fix it or jump straight to PoE2?

Bugfixes, feature implementations, compatibility, anything like that. From what I remember there was something they needed for the native Mac client that didn't work and seems like they bought/paid some 3rd party library manufacturer to solve that issue. Same again with their M1 support. The 3rd party library provider is not supporting M1 Macs yet, so there's no way for GGG to support it until the 3rd party fixes it. Unless of course they drop all 3rd party libs and do it on their own.

That being said, I tried a few T12 maps today on macOS and it's a pain. Massive frame drops and freezes, it's just no fun playing like that. While the PC version also has performance issues, it can be solved by throwing more powerful hardware at it and it's playable. That's something that sadly doesn't work on the Mac side of things. If I'd have to guess, I'd say they've allocated most people to PoE2 and only have a small group of people taking care of PoE now.

It seems that many will not be able to play this on Mac, they chose to min spec it at Catalina, many machines can run this but many older machines that can run Catalina cannot even install the game. Typical of the no idea that GGG have with things, this game is still not working correctly on the PS4 after 2 years, so do not hold your breath for a good Mac version.

there was a patch today, my performance seems to be improved even though there’s no mention of performance improvements in the patch notes. GCoder, since you’re further in the game than I am can you verify if you’re still lagging///Dropping lots of FPS (to unplayability) in the maps you mentioned? Thank you!

EDIT - there‘s definitely something different because I used to have to play with VSYNC on otherwise I would see TONS of screen tearing. Now since the latest patch, I am able to play with VSYNC off and just the FPS Limit/cap instead and there’s no tearing like before.

This may be due to the fact that I am using SwitchResX instead of EasyRes now and I choose a 16:9 aspect resolution to play in (1920x1080) instead of a 4:3 or 16:10 ratio... Also worth noting, I am playing in 1920x1080 instead of 1280x800 and it seems to be running smoother than before.

I wonder if perhaps PoE has a hard time “playing//running” in aspect ratios that are not 16:9. Probably not, but anywho just thought I would mention the changes I have made.

So to recap, the patch might have helped the performance though there’s no mention of it in the patch notes. I downloaded switchresx and am running the game in a 16:9 aspect ratio now instead of a 16:10 or 4:3 — I am playing at a higher resolution than before and the performance is better. I seemingly no longer need to use VSYNC to avoid (insane amounts of) tearing.

EDIT 2

Nevermind it's just as bad as always

Patch did really nothing for me, yeah. It's just a bad idea to play the game on higher levels when the character is not a tank. Made the mistake to try the patch and play Eternal Labyrinth which I was missing until today, because I couldn't find the last trial to unlock it. Eventually got it from global 820 channel and a nice guy from Washington invited me to join. Eternal is only monster level 75, which normally allows me to run through killing everything right away. I died twice because of massive frame drops which didn't allow me to run my attack pattern on the boss who killed me with a massive attack. I got through the third time to complete my ascendancy class (Witch / Elementalist). Windows version with T12/T13 maps (monster level 79/80) is totally smooth (on different hardware) on the other hand with higher settings.

3.13.2 Patch Notes. 4/5/21

• Texture Streaming has been further improved. Loading should now be quicker and you should see fewer low-resolution textures.

• Added automation to remove old minimap and shader data. This process occurs during the Grinding Gear Games logo video upon launch and may take some time. Old minimap and shader data will typically be cleared once per league in the future.

• Updated the patcher to reduce ggpk fragmentation during the patching process. This means that the ggpk file won't grow so large, so quickly, in the future. We're working on a graphical interface to the PackCheck tool so that you can easily condense it back down.

Owners of M1 Macs can now play Path of Exile through Rosetta, with minimal impact on performance. A native version will be available in a future update.

• Various renderer systems have been made roughly 15-20% faster, which doesn't necessarily translate to a performance improvement for all users but anecdotally it seems like it's around 5% faster on average for us.

• Fixed a common client crash.

??? 3.14 is out next week, isn't it? Or did I miss something?

Interesting. Wonder what framework/library it was that caused the issue. Also curious about that "future" update and if it means just a native version or a native version with all the bells and whistles (GPU support and settings).

I've already planned my starting character for 3.14. But will start straight away on Windows/PC.

Eh, I tried the new update and it seems the performance is improved but I already moved to Diablo 3. Sorry GGG but you guys F'ed up big with 3.13

What changed in comparison to 3.12? It's pretty much still the same, just a new league. Probably the same for upcoming 3.14. Not better, not worse.

Funny you mention D3. I thought about skipping PoE 3.14 and go for D3 S23, but after looking at (not playing) PTR 2.7.0, I gave up on it. Same old problem, D3 is way to simple just clicking around and PoE is too complicated for the endgame with endless crafting and modifying items. Patiently awaiting multiplayer for Last Epoch, that's the next thing I'll try after PoE.

PoE feels boring to kill things in comparison. Not exactly sure what it is.

And 3.13 added texture streaming which has caused the performance to dip for many users not only macOS related.

Interesting, I feel the that way about D3. Then again, I've played more D3 than PoE, so that might have something to do with it. Once I hit Paragon level 650-700 (which doesn't take that long) it becomes unbelievably boring for me as there's nothing interesting to do besides running GRifts again and again.

Can't say I notice much of a difference between PoE 3.12 and 3.13 (from what I remember of 3.12). But the Mac version looks pretty bad anyway. On Windows/PC, I have absolutely no problem at all. It's smooth as butter on highest settings. Could be due to the Nvidia GPU I'm running in the PC, so older/cheaper GPUs might be different.

Looking forward to next League in PoE. Enjoy your S23 in D3!

I dont understand where the game is installed on the mac...in applications the pathofexile app has just 80MB and there is nothing else but the storage is around 29Gb less after the installation

Downloading the >4GB patch right now. For science, also patching PoE macOS to see what if anything changed. I think it goes live in about 2h20m.

Starter notes for my Necromancer 🧙‍♀️ready, hopefully I can manage to get into mapping on the weekend.

So, their login servers can't handle the requests... 81000 people ahead of me in the queue logging in. Good job GGG!

Check ~/Library/Application Support. It's there for me, but I'm using Steam.

Looks like I won't be able to play today. At the current rate it's going, I have over 8 hours of "logging in" to do and wait.

The site seemed to respond faster just now. Started Update 3.14.0 (4.74GB) Download speed was good.
No changes to experimental Mac graphics options I can see.
99631 people ahead of you in the queue. :D

The stupidity of the GGG developers is unbelievable. They can't get a simple log-in system going, which is a 15 minute tutorial on the net + their proprietary technology on top. We have about 150k people sitting in a queue right now and... drumroll please... a priority login system/queue they implemented for streamers. So it works for all the bigger Twitch streamers and in the process of implementing this, they broke the normal login system for everyone else. They can log-in about 150 players (non-streamers) per minute with all servers around the world.

It looks like someone at GGG found the "on" switch at the server farm. It's moving faster now, I'm a few minutes away from login. Either that or they stopped downloading porn. o_O

So apparently 10000 followers on Twitch is buying a spot in the priority queue.

What a mess. Played to level 10, servers crashed again. Right now, no one can get in.

That's it for today for me. I'll try again tomorrow.

Looks like they fixed a bunch of stuff, I was able to play for a while, but it just disconnected again and I'm back in a queue for login. Some servers seem to be down.
