Well maybe, but in a year these manufacturers have come close. Apple in the meantime has released essentially the same phone with 3G and GPS. What do you think the other manufacturers will do this year?

Well it is certainly very similar hardware, with some components (like the processor) identical to the previous model. So from that perspective they have made little progress from the initial unveiling at MacWorld in January 2007.

If you look at the software from when it shipped last July and what will ship in a couple of weeks (including the progress made with the version 1 point updates) it is a different story.

I think version 2.0 is significantly better than Apple's initial offering. I'm talking about value added features, not just the inevitable security/stability improvements. Apple is also offering a platform for third parties, which they were not before.

Software plays a big role in the phone and Apple have dramatically improved their software, so from that perspective iPhone is not same phone as 12 months ago.

I like the look of the XPERIA X1 from Sony, which I think will do very well. I also like the look of the new NOKIA E SERIES phone (61 I think, the thin one). Both of these are sure to be popular with customers wanting a tactile keyboard. Apple should offer more hardware options, for sure.

These phones would probably have come about without the iPhone anyway. Apple's in a market far more innovative than the PC market, where companies mainly compete on price.

Disagree.. One of the things that Apple is doing right as opposed to the competition is to produce a properly working model with the only difference being capacity.

I for one would not like to see 10 different types of iPhone built by Apple, apart from maybe an entry level model..

Only really responding to the original post, but...

Like, I understand that, and I honestly agree, haha. Steve Jobs is nuts in those aspects, but he and the people around him are also geniuses in that aspect too, because it's clearly working since people like us fanboys are around.

i guess if that other guy doesn't read very well, you don't think very well. Nokia is pretty a much flat out phone company, that's all they do. they live, breathe, and sell phones.

even if Apple sells 6 million iphones a month they will still be shy of the 437 million phones in which you are so in awe of. hell if they sold 10 million units in a month it will take roughly 3.5 years to even match Nokia.

so what's your point exactly? that the sales figure of the iphone is so beneath you that you don't consider it worthy of being a phone? you think the features on it are piss poor so it shouldn't be considered a smart phone? i've looked at your previous posts and most of them are pretty much stating that you think the iphone sucks donkey schlong and that Nokia, RIM, LG etc. are the "real" phone companies who knows what the consumers want. if that's the case this sudden interest by them in producing a iphone-like unit is really bewildering.

so why bother posting in this iphone subforum then? surely it must boil your blood to see so many Steve Job worshippers wait for the iphone 2.0 like the second coming of Jesus.

if you're trying to drive the point that the iphone really isn't all that great it's not working out all that well either.

My point is hubris based on sales numbers are sorely misplaced. Especially saying Apple 'gets it' better than Nokia because the iPhone is selling well speaks of ignorance of how well Nokia is really selling.

My point is that some humility is in order.

First of all read this website to see that it's not only apple fanboys who can show a dislike for Nokia:
http://msmobiles.com/catalog/i.php/524.html
Personally, I feel that this is a bit over the top, but hey we all have are likes and dislikes, right?

And this is a quota from a Nokia website: "In 2007 we surveyed almost 1000 individuals, from nearly 400 customers in 80 countries. The response rate was 75%." (http://nds2.ir.nokia.com/A4942624)
Compare that with the graph on http://seekingalpha.com/article/50765-apple-s-iphone-builds-huge-lead-in-customer-satisfaction
http://static.seekingalpha.com/uploads/2007/10/22/jw1.jpg

Now who is showing of its hubris?

"and btw, I hope not you will stand in line with rest of the apple church to buy one of their products. What is this? STAND IN LINE before the store opens? Its a phone!"

Dear old dad, gotta love him.

I agree with your Dad! MINDLESS CONSUMERISM!

The real question isn't why people line up for a new phone from Apple.

The question is why people don't line up for new phones from other companies.

Maybe other companies have their logistics and distribution sorted out already. Or maybe Apple fans are a bit crazy.

As the OP's father said, its just a phone.

Apple get their Mac inventories and iPod inventories pretty spot on. Maybe they are not as practised with phones?

Also other companies still have product launches, this is what the queuing was for. I think it is obviously a deliberate publicity ploy.

Good point. I suspect a lot of it's driven by hype and expectation though, plus Nokia, for example, announce new models months in advance so you can get your pre-orders in and there's no need to queue.

I do remember the N95 being sold out for a couple of weeks just after release in my neck of the woods though.
