What options are out there if you don't particularly want to use OS X (…or Windows) and can't use Chrome OS? (real question)

The most common would be Linux, if the applications are there for you.

But it is market-distorting that there's iTunes for Windows but not for Linux.

WP already had very competitively priced budget phones. It seems he suggested selling below cost.
Yeah. Some, and their experience are not good. Same for android.
Hmm. Maybe you are right.

The funny thing is that until I read this story when it came out earlier today on another website, I was unaware of Paypal having an app. I mostly use it to send my daughters money and the web interface seems fine for that. maybe this will get me to look at the app (probably not, but maybe).

After installing Windows 10, I have been frequently hunting through the Windows Store for apps, but there just aren't any good ones. And now another one is getting the axe - pretty sad.
It's the sad fate of dead-end platforms, sadly anyone who still owns a Win RT tablet around here knows how that feels (and it's like yet-another stab to the heart, too).

Do you have to pay a fee sending money like that? I haven't used PayPal in a long time.

I remember they did a ton of advertising for their phone, guess that didn't pan out very well for them.

You know by the end of 2014, Microsoft actually had some good (considering the chokehold iOS and Android already had) marketshare numbers (~10%) in a number of markets over Europe and other parts of the world. Their numbers were coming up in most other places and front line App developers were starting to show up. They were close to making it big enough to be a sustainable platform - but it was all dropped at that point & between the executive change and the "we've got to throw it all over the side and rewrite based on Windows 10", Microsoft development of existing WP just died and over this last year it all spiraled down the toilet.

Saying that as a iOS user, but kept an eye on how Microsoft was doing from a market perspective. But now they have totally abandoned any idea of a viable consumer smartphone market (Paul Thurrott, Mr. Windows, was talking about that the other day). Seems like fire sale prices on 950's are coming.

The PayPal app on iOS does LESS than just going to their website. I downloaded it and tried out all its features. It's a joke. I don't know why they waste their time with it. The website is mobile optimized and works perfectly.
They might as well dump the iOS app too while they're at it. I deleted mine.
Can't remember when I last used it...

Oh wait, no actually I do. Must have been before you could set up two-factor authentication.

Have they fixed that yet? Being able to log in in the app when 2FA is set up?
What a joke...

You installed Windows 10 Mobile? Siriously? Because that's, you know, like what this thread is about.

Some time ago a friend of mine had the Lumia 800.

Whilst the Live Tiles were somewhat refreshing from the Widgets of Android and static icons of iOS there were two annoying things: a lack of apps and the ability to increase the size of text.

So I'm not surprised it's died a death (pretty much) with PayPal pulling the plug on the app I can see others following suit.

It's a shame because there are going to be more people out of a job on the back of this and not.only that there are people out there in the World who don't want an iPhone/Android phone.

I travel a lot and I had regular problems with Paypal over the years because of that. Paypal recommended me to use their mobile app and indeed since I switched these problems are gone. I also like the APN telling me what's happening with my account.

99% of what I do with PayPal is send people money or receive it. The app and the website work equally well for both. The app, however, allows me to use TouchID to log in. For me and many others like my that allow makes it worth using the app.

Too bad since the Windows Phone had some promise early on.

I always thought they should have just given the phones away at a huge discount to flood the market and get a foot hold then concentrate on the flagship models.

They tried the cheap phone route and just lost money in the process.

Can't say I've ever had the need to use paypal, so it wouldn't bother me regardless of what phone i had.

Pulling support for Amazon Fire devices is interesting considering it is just a heavily skinned version of Android and most standard APK's work just fine on Amazon devices. If they are continuing support for Android, why stop distribution in the Amazon App store?
[doublepost=1464293480][/doublepost]Another thing... I have 2 Paypal Student/Child sub accounts under my account for my kids... and I can transfer money back and forth between me and my kids and they can access it with their Paypal Debit Cards. The website shows me their balances right on the front page and I am 1 click away from seeing their transactions and transferring money between us. None of this is present on the app! Fix it Paypal!

It's a banking app. It is normal that they don't distribute it there if they just won't test it for FireOS.

It's funny because I originally started on HTC Hero, then moved to IOS 4s and 5s then switched to the Big Lumia (I wanted a bigger screen and better Onedrive integration) but I was truly surprised how nicely integrated and easy to us the OS was as well as reliable plus the live tiles were actually useful and I've stuck with it ever since.

You are 100% spot on when you say that 'one windows' vision really threw a spanner in the works as before the slow down major apps were finally migrating (I am a rare minority and not really an app person) and for business use IMO this thing is brilliant hence I was expecting them to hand it over to the Surface team to give it the final attempt; I believe they could deliver a good phone (I still believe they will release a phone this year).

With all this press about the windows phone issues people have had with the upgrades (myself included) it will make people (who are not already) extremely sceptical of the platform and if I was a developer I would not touch it as the messages Microsoft are sending are really mixed, let's see but you are right a fire sale is coming and truth be told most of us MS guys can't understand why the heck the released those phones.

It was obvious since Nokia announced they were going Windows. If normal people can avoid Microsoft, they will.

More so for Nokia fans. Even more for European Nokia fans.

I am perfectly normal, the WPOS integration worked brilliant for me as I am a heavy windows user (home and work) and I don't use many apps, when trying to keep everything running smoothly using MS apps at the time for IOS devices (4s and 5s) it was a flipping pain!

I get the logic behind the Nokia deal, they needed a company with the expertise they were lacking I did not see that as a terrible move, now the behind the scenes stuff appeared shady and it probably would have been better reaching some kind of development deal with Nokia but one thing is for sure, that deal did help the windows phone platform, not as long as they would of hoped for.
