Compared to a 10-15 pound desktop replacement monster, the mbp does lack some function and power. But compared to the same size/weight laptop, the mbp holds its ground pretty well. I just configured a new inspiron from Dell as closely as possible to the mbp (bigger hd (160) but worse GPU (8400m GS), and it comes to about a bit over $300 cheaper.
The positioning of the track pad is just laughable, Dell Designer: "Today we're going to play pin the trackpad on the laptop" One attempt later, "aww that will do, design done"
There are a few well designed PC notebooks on the market
For some, price is not really a concern, but a balance of all the desirable attributes in a portable computer - reliability, portability, versatility, power and support as well as aesthetics if it doesn't overrule the other attributes - is what's required. And the sole reason I even considered buying more MBP's is that I use an OS X based client-side software. However, we're starting to look into a Linux port of it so who knows how long the MBP's will last, both in the sense of holding up to use and also in terms of surviving early retirement in favour of better machines from... well, virtually everyone else who makes laptops at the Apple's price points![]()
Well, a lot of the PC laptops aren't doing very well in the portability and maybe versatility department with their 2 inch thick, 10+pound design.
There is also a shed load of awful looking ones!!! Hideous looking ones, ones you cant even understand how they work because they have a keyboard, then another keyboard of other controls attached to that, with some other grill or control pad attached to that, with every different sticker attached to that, then with 80 odd flashing LED's surrounding the whole thing!!
Possibly getting a bit carried away here...![]()
