Dumb! Insanely Dumb!!

Why on earth would you buy a $3000 dual-processor PowerMac G5 only to rip out the innards and put a -smaller- PC motherboard in there instead? Not only that, but use an old Athlon instead of something comparable to the two PowerPC G5s?? I cannot believe just how incredibly dumb this is. I mean, the guy didn't even do the case modification properly, and he put a neon light in there, of all things? This is the dumbest, most wasteful, and downright most insane mod I've EVER seen. It's so bad, it's a disgrace.

I can't believe that people are so bent out of shape about this. I hope the kid buys 100 dual G5s and runs over them with a steamroller. The only connection it would have to me would be that new Apple products might come a little bit sooner. That would be about $300,000 in sales for Apple. Sure, its a waste of a great computer. People waste things all the time. At least this way Apple made a sale.

Underclocking

This is sick! And why on earth is this published on overclocking.com? The modded machine has to be alot slower than the dual G5! And that is more like underclocking! Stupid kid!

take heart. the guy is obviously a ****wit and suffers from a lack of deductive and elementary tactile sense. but as yamabushi points out, his staggering stupidity just means a further redistribution of his parents wealth back into our global economy, therefore rejoice the fact that such cretins exist to make us all gaze in wonder and incredulous silence :)

Great point, yamabushi! At least Apple made a sale, even if it wasn't put to good use. (Oops! I accidentally quoted my own post before pressing the back button on my browser.)

Imagine that you work for Dell (or Microsoft) and you want to stir up the macheads on the internet. You requisition a Dual G5, get the folks in PR to dream up a "spoiled rich kid" story and then have the dweebs in engineering schlock together a Frankenstein box from the gutted remains of Apple's pride and joy. Then plant the story on the internet and wait for the controversy to begin. What a perfect crime! Lots of free publicity and a new urban legend is born; "Hey, didja hear about the guy whose parents got him a Mac, but hated it so much that he gutted it and put a PC inside it to fool them when all he wanted was a Dell?" If that sounds impossible -- it probably is.

Thats even more ridiculous then the actual purposed story.

Mad photoshop skills maybe

Like ripping the insides and engine out of a Rolls Royce and slinging in Ford Cortina parts. Typical PC luser. Pearls before swine!

I get your point but if he was the sort of person that had $3000 to blow on a case for a PC then I think he would have done a better job with the internals. It's a total hack job that looks like a 6th grader could have done better.

You just insulted 6th graders everywhere.

Apparently, someone already did. :D

But the kid probably has that as his next project ... :)

Its too bad Apple decided to mount the board on the opposite side, because you can only fit a Micro ATX board due to the location of the slots. I considered cutting out the entire back and doing a total swap with my old Dell PC, but I think it would have ruined the over all look to the case.

Obviously nothing HE did really ruined the overall look.... *ahem*

If this was actually the result of a PC company's publicity stunt, they would've equipped the case with good PC equipement, not something that only costs $50. They also would've provided links (even if only in the form of banner ads) back to that PC manufacturer's web site.

As an ad, an article like this does no good whatsoever. Do you seriously think it will convince anybody to buy a PC they weren't already planning to buy? Can you even think of a way that someone might think otherwise?

First off, I find it rather amusing that the PC he installed in that case will probably perform slower than Virtual PC running on that G5 system. But that's beside the point.

If any child of mine decided to completely destroy a $3000+ present, it would be the last present of any kind he ever got from me. I would immediately take away his computer, his stereo system, his cell phone, and anything else electronic in his posession. He would spend the rest of his childhood either in school or reading books in an empty bedroom until he turns 17. And then he can go get a job and find his own place to live.

He could've easily said "Mom, this is nice, but I'd really rather have a Dell". Then they'd return the $3000+ Mac, buy a $1000 Dell, keep the saved money and everyone would be happy. But he decided to be deliberately offensive by destroying his gift without even using it once. This shows a level of contempt that any normal parent should find insulting beyond belief.

Of course, these parents did spend thousands of dollars on a present without first finding out what the kid wanted. So they're also a bunch of idiots.

I think we should just rid the human race of that entire family. Soylent Green's too good for them.

It just ocurred to me that his PC may have problems overheating... Computer cases need airflow to function and with the holes on the G5 (the entire front and back are virtually not there) there's little possiblity that the machine would be able to work intense calculations without proper airflow...

Blast... no paypal yet...

I can't explain why but it would bother me less if he had ran over it with a steam roller.

Come on, that's almost as ridiculous as the case mod. They payed for the hardware, it's theirs, and they (or their kid) can do whatever he wants to it, no matter how idiotic. Hell, I spilled beer all over my nice new white G5 keyboard only a week after I got it. I was sitting on the couch the next day popping keys off with a screwdriver washing the sticky beer out of each of them. I would have loved it if Steve called me up to berate me for getting beer all over his lovely white G5 keyboard. I could have told him to get ****ed personally and to pull his head out of his ass and drop his prices by about 35% :)

Dude. I was kidding. Jobs wouldn't give a crap what an end user does with their system as long as Apple gets the money.

I think people are bent out of shape partly because of their connection to Apple and brand loyalty.
But more so because of the shear stupidity of it all. He trashed a $3,000 for the case. Read that line again. Think about it. The case. How much does a good case cost? $50-$120? He could have just as easily gone out, spent the cash and had not only this sweet dual G5 but this other XP system that he wanted to keep. Its asinine in the extreme.

Beyond that you are right. People waste things all the time, isn't that the American way?, but we aren't talking about buying a 6 pack and drinking only one. We aren't talking about buying a mouse keyboard combo pack and using only the mouse. This is a freaking high-end computer that was pillaged in the name of using just the case.
To further kick dirt in the face of the Mac user he put a PC in it. And to top it off he spit in the face of most Mac users by putting an underpowered POS in it. I personally am not too concerned or even care what he puts in the thing. What irks me is that he tore apart a $3,000 computer that was given to him as a gift. The moron could have been at least a little creative. Think G5 home server. *drools* But no. I think Mac users have every right to be at minimum a little irked. Any computer enthusiast be it a Windows user or a Mac user would look at this and say "What a moron"

I call BS, the style of writing is mildly antagonistic and done for effect.

I think he accomplished his mission...

Tricking out in Laa laa land...

"When I showed my friend, who happens to love Apple, he looked sick. He did not say anything to me. He just put his hands on his head and was in shock. I wish I had a picture of that."

Everyone, please a moment of silence for Andy's friend.

"I put all the parts from the G5 into a box and gave it to my friend. He was rather happy. I think he is going to try to install them into his G3 - I hope he's successful."

Okay so there is a silver lining to this story, now here is a MOD I would love to hear about!!

Poor kid, is going to feel like such a heel when he ages and realises what he has done!

LMAO!!
