Two weeks after its nationwide launch, NBCUniversal's Peacock streaming service has accumulated 10 million free and paid users, reports The Verge.

"NBCUniversal successfully launched Peacock in Cable's footprint in April, ahead of the streaming service's U.S. nationwide launch earlier this month, with 10 million sign-ups to date," Comcast chairman and CEO Brian Roberts stated during the earnings report. "The company is really trying to lean into streaming," he said. "I'm pretty excited as the world is transitioning… broadband is making that all possible."

It was a positive announcement among otherwise disappointing second-quarter earnings, as the company continues to struggle with the impact of the global situation on entertainment divisions. Peacock is a key part of NBCUniversal's restructuring, in which it will "shift resources from linear to streaming," according to NBCU CEO Jeff Shell.

The service showcases NBC shows such as "30 Rock," "Cheers," "Downton Abbey," and "Saturday Night Live," with live sporting events such as the English Premier League and the U.S. Open Championship.

Peacock was considered a late entrant to the crowded streaming service market, but has surpassed HBO Max, which has drawn 4.1 million subscribers since its launch in May. HBO Max does not have a free tier like Peacock, however. While Peacock has pleased executives with its performance, Comcast's home internet and cable segment lost 477,000 video subscribers.

Apple's rival service, Apple TV+, has been reported to have had slow growth, and it is estimated that fewer than 15 percent of eligible customers have signed up, despite the offer of a one-year free trial with the purchase of Apple hardware. Apple does not report subscriber numbers.

Like HBO Max, Peacock is not available on Amazon Fire TV or Roku. Peacock is available on iOS and Apple TV, and operates with both a free and a premium tier.

Update: This article has been updated to make clearer that the count includes users on both free and paid tiers.

I tried A Brave New World. Didn’t see the appeal.

I’m glad I get it for free for premier league, but it doesn’t really offer anything else I want.

I’ll use it more if the early access to tonight shows gets added like it was promised originally.

You will only get the crappy games from the Prior NBC Sports Gold pass. If you want all of the big games live you need NBCSN channel on a cable package. Luckily peacock will show replays of all the games though, I will definitely sign up to the ad free tier when the premiership starts back.

I’m pretty impressed with what they offer for free. Before peacock you could only watch on demand stuff from the NBC app like America’s got talent, by signing in with your TV provider. It’s all free now without a TV subscription. They offer a good selection of complete free series too like 30 Rock and Fraiser. The day it came out I cancelled my Sling Blue subscription.

You only get the free premier league with peacock if you’re an Xfinity cable subscriber, so that’s not a problem for me.

I never paid for NBC Sports Gold, but there were often games on it that I wanted to watch. So I’m glad they rolled it into a free option for xfinity subscribers.

yea because you are getting the premium version. Anyone else can get it for $5 a month with the premier league and everything else included or $10 a month without ads.

Do you get anything else for free when you pay for it?

Yes. $10 a month doesn't remove ads from live content though.

Nice sarcasm.

I consider it free. Just like I consider the free months of HBO I get occasionally to be free. It's an extra subscription I'm getting that I don't have to pay more for.

A misleading number for a misleading service. As is, I wouldn’t even use Peacock if the premium level was free.

The service is just another thorn in the modern TV experience. Can you imagine if we had to subscribe to a separate service for every music label?

I prefer not to add to fuel to their fire (or “subscriber” count)... You can request to delete a Peacock (or any NBCUniversal) account via this link.

They offer nothing. Both my wife and I signed up for the free version and have not watched once. So, they should not be counting free subscribers, as is very misleading...
