Round vs square? Meh... some people pay good money for the Tag Heuer Monaco.

First off, I couldn't disagree with you more on the Pebble looking 10x better. Not meaning to diss you at all, as tastes in design are subjective, but I would surmise you're in a very small percentage of people. I think the Pebbles look hideous. But that's not why I'm commenting. You said a quick charge provides 2 days of battery power. That's incorrect. A 15 minute charge provides 1 day of battery power, per their claims.

Taste in design is not subjective, feelings and reactions are. The Pebbles are not that great looking sure. But a vast majority of people are disappointed with the Apple Watch too.

The Pebble Round while not perfect looks way better, maybe the next, hopefully round, Apple Watch will look better too.

Of course you hate the Apple Watch and of course you like the Pebble. Personally I find the bezel absolutely disgusting, how much screen estate is left?

Yeah the bezel has it's style, it's not great. The Apple Watch either.

The difference here being that the Pebble Round still manages too look objectively better than the Apple Watch, which is not the case of the iPhone 6 vs most smartphones, or Macbook vs. any laptops. That's what's disappointing about the first Apple smart"wear"

That's not the slightest bit objective. This thing is ugly, cheap, tacky and oversized that makes me think of those vomitous 80s giant wristwatch wall clocks. My Apple Watch is the definition of gorgeous, understated, elegant polished glass and metal beauty.

Objectively.

(BTW, I will refrain from mentioning that Apple Watch won actual design awards from actual design experts, whose stock, trade and entire profession is design, while this absolutely will not, since that would just stick the objectivity knife in even further than necessary.)

I'm going to stick with my mechanical watch, but I have to admit I like the looks of this round Pebble watch versus the Apple watch.

I dislike both the Apple Watch and this Pebble. Personally I think the new Moto 360 is the best design so far although even that has problems (still way too thick and with a bit cut off at the bottom).

I would bet the screen is actually square for low cost and ready supply, and that the bezel is just a matte like in a picture frame.

Thank-you for the correction - - I didn't realize that it was confirmed that Pebble is using those Japan Display Inc. screens in their new device. Luckily I didn't bet too much!

(On the other hand, that bezel is all the more inexcusable now.)

And you're entitled to subjectively make that mistake think that.

Right, because people buy the Watch to look at their 12MP photos and 4K videos shot with their iPhone 6S on a 1" screen... Gather the family around, uncle Joe is gonna have a slideshow on his Apple smartwatch! /s

A round display of the same height actually gives the camera viewfinder preview window a larger image, making it easier to see on a 1" display, as well as a complete widescreen viewfinder, rather than Apple's cropped one, to ensure you don't cut off anything important in your framing. And there's more room for additional controls as well, if needed.

And as for how much more area you have for maps, a round watch of the same height as the Watch actually displays more of the mapped area, giving a better perspective for the wearer to orient themselves.

You couldn't have picked two worse examples to make your point, as a round watch display such as that found in the Huawei watch, actually offers more advantages over the rectangular Watch, at the exact same height.

Moreover, the following example shows how much better a round watch displays a message for use with the "glances" Jony Ive said he designed the watch for ... no need to squint at the round display, which does just as good a job displaying the message as the rectangular display.

The only advantage a rectangular watch face offers is scrolling blocks of text, which quite frankly is the last thing anybody would likely want to read on a 1" display. And we're not likely to see an iBooks app for the Watch any time soon.

No people don't buy an Apple Watch to view 12MP photos or 4K videos on them. Kind of a strange thing to say. Regarding photos and your example above, what do you do with a round watch when you have a portrait (vertical) photo to take, which most of the time people take? The vast majority of the photos I take on my iPhone are portrait. Video fits nicely in landscape mode but who would want to sit around with grandpa or uncle Joe and watch a video on their watch? Just because Apple came out with 4k video doesn't mean people want to watch it on their watch nor do I think Apple or anyone else would try to push video to a smartwatch. Not in this day and time.

As for photos, I'm sure Apple has some way of transferring the photos from the new 6s/6s+ in 12MP to be able to view like other photos in your phones's album. I also think people do want to be able to display a photo they took and see it on their watch face, be it their kids, spouse, friend or favorite place. Yesterday was one year since my Dad died and I took advantage of Apple's watch OS2 new photo face to put a photo of my Mom and Dad on my watch face for the day.

I don't think the Huawei watch is bad looking at all but it does still take up more real estate on your wrist to get the same view more or less. And as someone pointed out this thread is about Pebble's Round watch so let's stick to the topic. With Pebble's Round and their gigantic bezel, you're really sacrificing wrist real estate for a much smaller screen area. I doubt that with Pebble's e-ink you'll be seeing great photos on it, the resolution from what I saw on their website was not impressive and doesn't even come close to what the Apple Watch displays.

My personal preference is to read text on a rectangular screen. I think it looks like crap on a circular screen and accommodations need to be made to display it. I "could" read an article or long email on an Apple watch on my screen but think the experience would be horrible trying to do the same on a round faced watch because you start shaving off text above and below the center point of the screen because of it's shape.

No, fully serious. The AW looks likes a cheap kids toy one of my kids have. But even that has a better interface.

vtech.jpg

Don't think that Vtech looks like an Apple Watch at all, not the same shape or screen shape, and it has a metal bezel not like Apple's hidden black "glass" one but it does look more like some of the other early smart watches I've seen. The icons do like like the ones on the Pebble website although the ones above look better than the Pebble's IMO.

Why many like to jump into making round watch when they are not even good enough or technologically ready?

Thus far, those round digital things, none has given a wow or really stand out.

Apple is not the first, but I honestly say that they impress most if not all the time.

It actually looks like the pebble time.

I don't understand how pebble can hop between being a crowd funded start up, and a company with a major releases every so often. I guess Kickstarter just cares about that %. Oh well.

That's not the slightest bit objective.

That word, I don't think it means what he thinks it means. :D

These design related threads are always interesting in that I'd love to see what people who are critical of certain designs do for other design choices, i.e., their cars, or houses, or clothing - I recall someone on a car forum being critical of some design choices on some tech, and when I viewed their profile, they had a Corvette with stick on tail light louvres, and they were standing in front wearing jean shorts with a belt and a clip on phone holster ... :)

Apple is the new Timex, Pebble is the new Casio, both are equally unappealing as a watch.

The more I wear my Apple Watch, the better I understand it's rectangular shape. Sure, it' reads easier, but the design enhances the shape of our arms. The wrist is round, but the arm is long (rectangular) and flat which is why a rectangular watch looks much nicer on someone who wears short sleeve shirts - sure, the round is nice and it's a personal choice in the end, but the rectangular matches our body shape. Pebble looks like a toy and there is nothing professional or flattering about it. Usefulness; perhaps so.. Style and usefulness is why apple is selling so many watches.

Wrong on so many levels!

That thing is ugly. "Our team has created the first smartwatch that looks like a beautiful classic wrist watch" I bet he drives a PT Cruiser.

"Please share Pebble Time Round with them. Maybe they'll get one..."

I'm an original Pebbler but COME ON PEBBLE GET A GRIP, you never saw Jony Ive saying "maybe they'll get one" with a cheesy yet desperate looking facial expression.
