I like how they promote 7 day battery life BUT they fail to understand if the pebble had a color screen and useful apps that get used regularly the pebble will have the same battery life as the others. Pebble did not invent a new type of battery that lasts 7 x longer than any other battery available today.

I do get the humor of the add and also feel sorry for them because the apple watch will destroy them from 2015 onwards.

Got to give them credit for what they offered in the early days of smart watches, those days will be over soon.........

Pebble has plenty of useful apps. And color isn't needed for things like notifications... Frankly it's more of detriment for these tasks, since it means relying on transmissive/emissive display technologies that get washed out in sunlight. (At least until color epaper is perfected)

Kind of makes you wonder why Pebble is taking this direct jab at Apple. Obviously not everybody will want or need a full-featured Apple Watch that starts at $350. There's plenty of room for other companies below that price, whether it's fitness bands or watches like Pebble that boast stuff like long battery life.

I think every company that competes with Apple has released an ad mentioning an Apple product in the past month. It seems kind of weird. Most car ads are "BUY CAR BECAUSE AWESOME," not "BUY CAR BECAUSE FORD SUCKS AND GM IS TOTES BETTER!"

actually most car commercials mention the competition when it comes to fuel economy, driving range, safety, price, long term reliability/durability, consumer's best buy ratings, JD power ratings, best sales numbers etc

They might mention another brand or two at times, but it's never consistently the same one. These ads strike me as if every other car manufacturer started mocking Tesla. Some of them really are as stupid as, "Want a car that drives more than 200 miles? We've been making them for a century. The 2014 Ford Fusion."

Step counting?
Is there a new watch out cause I have one from their kick starter days and it doesn't count steps.

Pebble Misfit App, you can use Misfit to make your Pebble track steps.

--------------

Pebble was introduced in July 2013. It sold out in five days. I've been wearing mine since about that time. Depending the watch face you currently have, at a glance you can see a lot of information. I bought my Pebble as a "make do" until the Apple Watch was to come along. Now I can't imagine being without a smart watch.

I won't hesitate to glance at my watch to read the headline of an email, or a text. Yes, if I need to respond, I have to use the iPhone but we all get many notifications each day that just need a quick look.

Pebble is here today. Apple Watch is something to be released in five or six months. We know from every previous experience there won't be enough of them available so we'll either have to line up or we'll be waiting weeks or months like I'm doing for my iPhone 6 Plus to get here. The Pebble is inexpensive enough that it can be a gateway into smart watches for those that don't want to wait.

The ad was brilliant. Look how many in here have said the never heard of Pebble until the saw this thread, and we're gadget people.

never consistently? you sure about that?

guess you've never seen ads for pickup trucks then

I can say with certainty: Both the apple watch and the pebble have a place.

Random musings on this topic:

I'm definitely not going to do anything "too active" with a $400 watch (after taxes and shipping). Just like I don't wear any good mechanical watch to do those things.

I take my pebble or my timex weekender over my omega for daily use. The omega only hits my wrist when I need to make a statement to a certain type of client or I am dressed up for an occasion. I didn't save chunks of my "discretionary budget" for 5 years to buy such a watch to wear while working on the cars or messing about in the yard.

I plan on eventually getting an upper-crust digital timepiece like the apple watch, maybe the second or third generation when it gains some real water resistance, but it won't be to replace my pebble, timex, or omega. The pebble is amazingly resilient despite its "plasticky" foundations and poor initial build quality at the $149 they were asking for it. (I paid $79 for mine which allowed me to excuse a few of the flaws I found initially)

If I want a fitness tracker that does more than the pebble, it is going to be something that is ~just~ a fitness tracker. Crappy part of that now: there is a lot of room between where the current fitness trackers are in price and the apple watch. The next generation of fitness-only trackers have the room to raise prices quite a bit "just because" without risking people jumping to the apple watch, not necessarily because they added any valuable features.

Im just strictly amazed at the fanboy criticism of anything "non apple". As an avid user of both Mac and PC my preference is a mac...and I don't ever see me going back for any reason. I'm also an avid user of iOS and Android...and both have their strengths and flaws. I always thought the whole smartwatch idea was the dumbest thing ever...and was glad Apple stayed out of it.....until I've used a fitbit extensively. I just can't wear something on both wrists...so I go without a watch to wear the fitbit. I'm a bit obsessive compulsive about the fitness tracking so I never take it off, therefor very rarely wear a watch anymore. Since the release of fitness apps for the pebble, I decided to try one....especially since it was under $100 ($95 at Sams Club). I must say....it's very nice. The accelerometer is just as accurate as my fitbit....still has a silent alarm...and the notifications are nice. Not completely necessary, but definitely a nice convenience. And the battery life is awesome. I will never wear a watch or smartwatch that needs to be charged every night or every other night. So in summary, it's actually a very useful item at a great price....that works with both popular smartphone platforms.

I feel the "fanboyism" is kinda rediculous and close minded. If you have a great product that fits your needs, why get up in arms who makes it? and why do the marketing for the corporation? Great products stand up for themselves.

PS. I kinda find the jab at the smartwatch community funny actually. Just remember people...it's marketing 101. Whether you like it or are upset by it...the fact you're talking about their product shows it worked.

This is a late reply, but yes, the pebble does count steps. You just need the latest update and either the Misfit app or Jawbone UP watchface. It has always had the hardware needed (Accelerometer) but Pebble was just extremely slow to update the software.

Well. The misfit app only records the misfit fob steps. The pebble itself doesn't count steps. But it can display what other wearables count. Correct? Or am I missing something?
