I'll stick with a regular Pebble Time, thank you. I am very excited about the smart strap feature though.

----------

The Apple Watch screen may have more colors, but the trade-off is that it's non-persistent... You'll have to keep waking it up... and, since it's immersive rather than reflective, it almost certainly will be much more difficult to read outdoors.

Plus the Apple Watch is a day with "average use". Heavy users will have to charge it more often.

Battery life isn't even a deciding factor for me. Pebble doesn't do half the stuff Apple Watch will do or be capable of. So if I have to put it on the charger while I have dinner or take a shower, I'll survive knowing that if I had bought a Pebble, I wouldn't be able to control AirPlay or my AppleTV, use ApplePay, Siri, send texts, etc, with my watch.

They look very similar:rolleyes:
Ignore how both show 10:09.

Lol. And ask me about the bezels. Everyone cries so hard about them on Apple products and then non-Apple devices do the same or worse and get no call-out.

Is that screen one square inch?

The dimensions are actually only marginally different from the smaller Apple Watch, both in terms of screen and total size (the biggest difference is height, which is due to the standard 22mm strap connectors). It is perhaps more noticeable because the background of the Pebble Time screen isn't a sharp black (when the backlight is on anyway), and so stands out more from the bezel.

Here's an article on the 10:09/10:10 setting, nothing to see here, move along..

:D

And while some may say this is a bad day for apple, I think it's a good day as it proves that hideous bezels (or two like the plastic pebble time) don't seem to upset people at all.

I'm an original early Kickstarter backer of the original Pebble. I still wear it daily, and love it (I replaced the plastic band with a leather one long ago.)

When the "Pebble Steel" came out, I thought it was nice looking, but not worth the upgrade, with no additional functionality.

The Pebble Time is enough of an upgrade, I sprung for it as soon as the Kickstarter went live. Now that there is a Time Steel, I'm tempted.

The non-Steel Pebble Time certainly looks better than the original Pebble. The metal-and-Gorilla-Glass face is far better, while still being inexpensive. It was a no-brainer to pre-order. But the Time Steel..... It looks SO much better. And the battery is apparently ~40% bigger, the Time Steel claims a 10-day battery life. The Apple Watch just can't touch that with a 10-foot pole.

I love the extra capabilities of the Apple Watch, but the battery life is a deal breaker for me. And to me, the Apple Watch doesn't look enough better than the plain Pebble Time to be worth double. Especially since it is rumored that it is only the "Apple Watch Sport" That will be at that price point. And comparing the Gold-tone Pebble Time Steel to the Apple Watch Edition? While it's obviously not in the ballpark in functionality and actual composition, it's not in the same ballpark for price, either.

That's an advantage that doesn't make a difference to most people. Apple Watch should have a day of battery and most people take their watch off when they sleep.

Is there a report that supports the "most people" statement. I keep my watch on.

----------

Pebble was innovative in 2012; now it's just Brick.

What "smartwatches" have a 10 day battery and ability to add more functionality through smartstraps?

----------

The gunmetal version with the leather strap actually looks fairly nice. I'm tempted at $250 because I probably won't be able to get an Apple Watch that looks that good for under $600. But I'm just kinda horrified by the UI on that thing. The awkward icons are especially ugly. Perhaps if they had an alternative theme?

I don't know about a complete alternative theme but there probably over 100 different watchfaces on top of countless apps.

I can only provide you with unscientific polls.

http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=237704

https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=61009

I could go on and on. I couldn't find a single poll where the majority said "yes".

But again, if you are one of the few that wears it, smartwatches charge very quickly and charging it for 30 minutes and sleeping with it on standby shouldn't be a problem.

Obviously people will see someone wearing one of these and say 'ooh, you got an Apple Watch' and then after closer inspection say 'ah no it's an Apple Watch knock off.'

I should have been aware of that. I'm used to Apple using 9:41 and thought that changing to 10:09/10:10 was some decision they made that wasn't related to the industry.

I'll probably use that on the Apple Watch. So I'll charge it while I'm getting ready in the morning and it should have enough battery to get me through the day. Or I can charge it an hour before I go to sleep and leave it on standby at night.

I don't follow. That just sounds like a nuisance. We'll laugh about this someday when Apple Watch 2 or 3 or whatever has battery life befitting a premium device.

Oh, it's definitely not a nuisance, for me at least. I have a G-shock watch and I take it off a few times per day even though I don't need to. I know everyone's different, but I don't like wearing my watch for 15 hours straight.

All I can say about current Pebble Steel is that I went on a 2 weeks trip with it and without the charging cable… And with moderate usage I even brought some juice back! How awesome is that

For me the Pebble wins 10-1...simply because of its battery life. I don't fancy the idea of charging my watch every night. (And the water proofing is a big plus too.)

Meh, battery life? Wouldn't give a rats ass. It only takes few seconds for me to plug it on charge. Rather do that every evening and have a better overall product, then a mimic of it. As for the waterproof we don't know yet anything about the Apple Watch.

Maybe they realize that only a fool would buy a tech piece that cost thousands of dollars which will become obsolete when gen 2 Apple Watch is released.

lol - the folks at pebble WISH they had customers who'd pay $1,000+ for their watch. as it stands, no one would, cause it's not premium.

does everyone undertand the word 'premium'? does everyone at least have at least the slightest insight as to the habits of rich people? good, let's move on from apple watch's prorated pricing then... it's long overdue.

Pebble was innovative in 2012; now it's just Brick.

please... the word 'innovation' has become the new word for 'released first' - any semblance of worldly understanding would key people in on the fact that most tech companies are all working on the same things at the same time, generally speaking. keep up on actual component manufacturers before they're assembled at well-known companies if you're going to insist on expecting apple or Pebble or anyone to 'invent' something that doesn't have any possibility of making it to fruition yet.

If the Apple Watch didn't exist, this is the Pebble I would get.

Nice to see the tried to copy Apple in every way.

But July? Really? No one will give a damn. By that point Apple Watch will be everywhere and no one will pay $300 for a Pebble when they can pay $350 for an Apple.

Non iPhone users will give a damn.

iWatch is only useful for iPhone owners. This is something that a lot of people forget.

iWatch will not crush all other smart watch models out there purely for this reason.

Yeah! I hate the fact that as soon as a new generation of an Apple product is released, the previous version stops working. Immediately. And self-destructs. And the resulting ashes melt. And...

I also thought that, and I do have a Pebble Steel (normal one). BUT, and that's a very big BUT:
Pebble currently is extremely limited on iOS compared to Android. No reply to messages with predefined texts, nothing.
Also, the battery life myth, try using something like Misfit or Up for Pebble all day round and check your battery life.

Also, lot's of people don't sleep with their watch on, myself included, so charging it every day is not that big of a deal.

Now another different story is if we need to charge it midday like I do with my iPhone. Then yes, then the Pebble battery makes a bigger difference.

so TL;DR
battery is good but I sleep without watch so I can charge every night no issues.

Don't necessarily agree. I'm interested in the Apple watch, and I will definitely look at it. But what I want out of a health connected device is the ability for it to track my whole day, which includes my sleep.

People still thinking on the apple watch? Pebble seems better here is why:

1) 10 days battery life, although people remove the watch from their hand at night, they still don't want to charge it every night. It's annoying.

2) e ink screen, and a colour one! Work great in sunlight, and watch is ON all the time.

3) price ,cheaper ,the plastic one much cheaper the steel is still cheaper.

4) work with every phone, not only iPhone.

5) waterproof.

6) looks great, not much different than the apple watch, and in some ways even better.

7) second iteration from the pebble guys, they fix most of the problems.
While with Apple it is the first iteration, and we know how this going to end...
8) replacing band that can measure things ( in the future, but protocol is ready.)

The apple watch maybe interesting in the 3rd iteration, right now it is pricy, and more a gimmick.

Yeah, I think they need to widen the gap a bit. I'd hesitate to cut myself out of the zillions of 3rd party Apple watch apps, just to save a lousy $49

I also think Apple needs to start lower than $349. So there! :)

I agree with both your points!

Pebble Time should be $149, Time Steel should be $199 and the Apple Watch should start at around $249-299 ($279?). These things aren't standalone devices... they're satellite accessories for your phone and they lose a majority of their usefulness if you're not around your phone.

It kind of sucks that there is still no one watch that has everything I am looking for. For every one I see that gains a feature I want I lose a different one I wanted.

I agree... it lacks the innovation and wow factor that the iPod/iPad/iPod Touch and iPhone had when first released.

I bought the basic Pebble Watch yesterday for $99 at BB. Here are some early impressions:

1. About the only thing it does on its own, without a smartphone, is tell time and track steps. That's fine with me, since I knew that going in.
2. Notifications work well and do add some level of convenience. You can not reply to a message, and I also knew that going in....so, that's fine with me.
3. The purported battery life is 5+days, which is good, so you don't need to bring along a charging cable for a weekend get away. I have only had it for a day, so can't vouch for the claim.
4. The size and weight are acceptable and not too bulky for a guy, but I doubt my wife would want to wear one.
5. Water resistance is a big plus. I sail, and this is something I don't want to think about with a watch.
6. I suspect this watch is going to show scratches and the like. I plan to just live with it, since it is a $99 accessory not an expensive piece of jewelry. At $350 plus, the :apple: watch better be more resilient...TBD.

That's about it. For my first try at a smart watch, this is about the investment I was willing to make for something that is basically an accessory to a smartphone. I will give the :apple: watch a look for later iterations, but right now I have a hard time justifying much more than $99 for an accessory that is dependent on a smartphone and is likely to become obsolete in a few years with the rapid changes in technology. I am in no way being critical of someone that is willing to pay more for an :apple: watch, since everybody has their personal preferences.

Edit: I should also have mentioned that you can control (pause, play, advance, go back) your iPhone music from the Pebble watch, which might be handy. Also, there are about 1,000 apps for the watch. The weather app is pretty good, and it is nice to look at your watch to get the current temp and the 5 day forecast. Of course, your smartphone must be synced for this to work.

I slept with my Pebble on my wrist and now sleep with my Fitbit Surge on my wrist for sleep tracking. Moving to Apple Watch I will lose that feature... though... I guess I really don't need to track my sleep to know I'm not getting enough of it.

One word.... Fugly.

Fugly isn't actually a word... it's an amalgam of two words...

But yes the Pebble Time Steel is kind of ugly... the bezels are too big. The Pebble time with it's bigger frame around the screen actually makes the screen look bigger... the black glass bezel makes it feel like you're looking at a tiny window inside of a large box.
