Putting aside Penryn, Montevina, Nehalem and all the other code words for a second, let's just look at what is currently out there... in particular the recently upgraded MacBook.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong here (and I apologise if this has already been suggested, this is a long thread), but take the current MacBook, take off it's monitor (including iSight), keyboard, trackpad, microphone, speakers and battery then surely you're left with parts that would fit into a MacMini enclosure, parts that Apple have already sourced, are above those of the current MacMini and are already buying in bulk.

The iMac, I admit, is a different animal but surely it would be a quick win and satisfy a lot of people if Apple were to release a MacMini with the current MacBook specs (obviously, minus the above parts).

I'd certainly be in line for a 2.4Ghz Mini with 2Gb memory and probably wouldn't be the only one.

Not exactly. They would need to redesign the logic board to fit the mini's form factor. Other than that though it does stand to reason that the Mini will see comparable performance to the Macbook as it is now sometime down the road. I still am not convinced we'll see the mini updated for a few months though. When Intel announced reducing production of and the eventual discontinuing of the Mini's current CPU Apple quickly updated the Macbook and Macbook Pro to Penryn and most likely will be moving the iMac in that direction soon. My guess would be they will try to run out their current stock of the Mini's current chip as much as possible before switching to Penryn/Santa Rosa.

But having waited so long, why not wait a few more weeks and ship it with Montevina which will not only run cool, but offer better memory and integrated graphics performance?

I don't believe Apple has ever advanced the mini beyond the Macbook so I would assume they would hold true to that. Apple won't be updating the entire line within a short time period either. I would expect the move to the Montevina chipset throughout the lineup (where applicable) over the course of the year with the mini being the last to do so.

The mini seems to notoriously be the "dump" for older parts.

Indeed, the mini is mostly made out of older MacBook parts, sans the logic board. Since the MB has been updated, it won't be too long before a mini arrives. I'm assuming most of the old MB stock has sold out by now, so a mini introduction is imminent.

Whilst I can accept the points about waiting for technology and the fact that the MB would need to be different to the MacBook, there is something more fundamental to consider here...

You need units to sell and judging by the amount of 'out-of-stock' notices against the 2Ghz mini on UK reseller sites (John Lewis, Dixons and PC World to name but a few) then I think Apple has to release something sooner rather than later, whatever its underlying technology is.

Apple is on a roll at the moment with record profits, the last thing they need now is to run out of things to sell.

Whatever Apple have planned, I can't help feeling that we are only weeks away from seeing it.

In general, I would agree with you, but with Nehalem likely in "everything" by late 2009, I think Apple might want to actually follow an accelerated roll-out schedule with Montevina - even with the Mac Mini.

I hear there won't be any new iMacs

And Will Smith will pilot a craft stolen from Roswell:eek: right into SJ's office!. Wait, they used a Apple portable in that film, mine never ran that quick
Cracking post, and lightened my rainy day in the UK:D

Wow, if the new iMacs get released on Tuesday I will then declare that day the official day of the gods (since GTA 4 is coming out at that day as well). :D

True Story. GTA pre-ordered, and an iMac would make that probably the best day of my life. :D

Speed bump & bigger hard drive are fine, but if they put in a better display then count me in!

Can someone explain this to me?

Are you referring to the graphics card or the display unit itself? There seems to be a lot of complaining about the display on the IMac but I am sitting here staring at it right now and it looks great.

I am not getting what all the complaints are about.

Main complaints AFAICS are to do with accuracy of colour representation (for designers and photographers), viewing angles (low), and reflections due to the gloss.

But if you're not a designer.. and your iMac isn't facing a window or any other bright light source.. and you sit directly in front of your iMac to use it (why would you not) then I would agree that the screen is fine.

Much comes down to personal preference & some prefer a matte display for obvious reasons. There's also a significant difference in quality between the 20" & 24" iMac screens, with the 24" being generally far superior & able to display many more colours. In some lines of work, such distinctions really do matter.

But for many ordinary consumers, the 20" glossy is more than adequate. FWIW, for me a matte option would be an obvious choice every time.

I've got a 2.8Ghz 24" refurb sitting at work waiting on Tuesday. If they release new ones then back she goes but whatever 24" iMac I end up with I'm going to get some 3M matte overlaminate and transform it.

I've read mixed views about the overall effect of these anti-glare films, so maybe a good idea to first Google some threads relevant to the make of film you're buying. But please post back your impressions after using it.

I'm not doing color work anymore so my requirements are much subdued from days gone by...that's also why I'm ordering an iMac and not a beefed up quad core Mac Pro. I'll post my results though...

I'm also going to start the return process tomorrow or Monday for the unopened refurb unit I got last week (to hedge my bets) and take whatever will be released at the $1799 level.

Thanks. FWIW, I think the 24" refurb model you've got is excellent, so I hope your hedging of bets works out for you & that Apple pop in a better video card (on top of the usual bumps) for you guys.

I can't believe it, I'm playing the game!! I'm returning my brand new 24 2.8ghz iMac and then I'm ordering the new one that just came out today. 12 days of use and I feel like I want the latest one. Oh well... The one I have had a dead/stuck pixel and more than few dents in the aluminum case, so I wasn't 100% happy. I guess when you pay top money for a top model it better be in a pristine condition or else. right?
