Battery life is huge for most people. It’s just too expensive for what it is. Too crippled for a lot of people to consider. One speaker as well at the top only which of course they didn’t mention. In general people don’t want to pay more for less, and that’s what you’re doing with air vs base model. I don’t think largely consumers are demanding a smaller thin phone. Apple is purely throwing mud at a wall and seeing what sticks.

I definitely get the point of the Air.
Think about it: it has basically the same battery life as the iPhone 13 Pro Max (as per Apple official specs, which are typically accurate).
I own the 13 Pro Max and almost 4 years later I still get all-day battery life, so from my point of view I'd be getting a crazy thin, light, more powerful iPhone with exactly the same battery life. I don't really care about camera features or speakers as I'm not the target audience for that, nor do I game on my iPhone enough to care about improved thermal throttling performance.
However, I do care about a smaller and lighter iPhone that doesn't ruin all my jeans pockets, and if it's really as durable and strong as they say, it might be the first iPhone I would rock without a case.

It makes much more sense than a Plus-iPhone IMHO, at basically the same price point.

I feel like people don't give Apple enough credit for this one, they compromised on WAY less things than I thought.

I don’t particularly do any of that really. And I’ve noticed differences in each of the iterations I have upgraded to.

I will have had every phone since the 15pm.

Maybe you do some things i don't; but for me, i noticed significant performance improvements every time i upgraded until the 13 series. For me, on a phone, that level of performance is "enough" until i start using some new app that needs more.

If there is a 17 plus, it would be so good that it basically has everything of pro except one camera difference for most people and it would be $200 cheaper than 17 pro with a bigger screen, this could be a reason why they make Air such an uncompleted product so that nothing closed to Pro.

The original poster had great points and now all the people who need to justify buying a pro are dissing the air. It’s ok you are getting a pro, nobody is putting it down. You rarely get a chance to be on the cutting edge of design and function and now is one of those times. We have all bought the iPhone pros for years and this week we can obtain the first iteration of the future. I can’t wait until my black air arrives. Years from now I think I will be quite happy I had the first iPhone air when it first came out. It literally has everything I want in an iPhone.

Good morning Doug, we get it. You aren’t buying the air. That’s ok.

Its still going to be thinner than a larger phone wearing a case.

Yup.

iPhone Air + case is bound to be thinner and lighter than iPhone Pro Max + case.

I find the Air quite interesting but I'd like to see real world battery life for web browsing and the like, not just battery stats for video streaming.

I don't really mind the single camera. I have the SE3. Thing is the SE3 128GB cost me like $300 on a Walmart deal while the Air is going to cost $1000.

Not just me, you can just go to Apple website and pre order one now, it is not popular at all and a lot of storage, you can buy as many as you want, many people just like me is not interested in this one camera $999 thing
Nothing better to do on a Saturday than hang out on a forum letting excited people know you don't agree with their decision to buy one?

Precisely. If they have a 3 camera Air, I will buy it in an instance.

But likely thought they could milk it. 1 cam, then 2 cam, then 3 cam eventually

The reason people are mad about the Air is because they DO want it. But they're angry, addicted power users so they also want the battery life and cameras the Pros provide. This creates a conflict in them so instead of accepting that the Air is really cool and perfect for a lot of people that aren't power users, they have to find a reason to hate it instead to feel better about not having one.
I think this is scarily accurate. That's a good read on things.

Edit: forgot a word

Since I wear 2 iPhones on my belt 5 days a week, I am looking at belt clip cases for the Air.

Wish there was a slender make/model with belt clip.

I have been using Encased for years and love their design.

The screen on the Air is a big upgrade over the 16 Plus, 0.2” is barely noticeable, also slimmer bezels and 120hz variable refresh promotion display & much brighter up to 3000 nits peak brightness with AOD. No contest IMO.
Looking at the Air as a SIGNIFICANT upgrade from the Plus, especially when it comes to the display (120Hz, AOD, 3000 nits of brightness) design (premium polished titanium build quality on top of being shockingly thin and light), and power (A19 Pro with 12GB RAM will be a BEAST) is the way everybody should be looking at it. And the screen size difference is actually even less at only 0.14", as the exact measurements of the displays are 6.69" on the Plus and 6.55" on the Air. The fact that the Air starts at $999 is also VERY fair and impressive, because even Samsung's version starts at $1100.

People like to dog the Air for being a "solution seeking a problem" because "nobody asked for a thinner phone", but in reality the Air makes MUCH more sense in the lineup vs the Plus. Because anybody buying the Plus was better served buying a Pro Max, as the Plus didn't have anything to offer (other than a lower starting price) to make it a better value proposition than the standard iPhone or a better/more appealing device than the Pro Max. The Air actually has some merit of its own that makes it stand out as a worthy alternative to both the base model AND Pro-series this year, by serving as a true hybrid of the two but with its own unique, incredible form factor as well.

^^^ This is good as I used to have the 14+ and loved the super long battery that exceeded the PM.

But I really need AOD and 12GB for AI.

Now I can't wait to get it; if my delivery order gets upgraded from 9/25....

Yes, perhaps it will be like the MacBook Air and it will eventually gain those features, but today I don’t really see the point.

Maybe it will become the default, but right now it’s a compromised iPhone 17 that’s more expensive, and whose only two advantages are thinness and weight, on the one hand and grouping them as a category (which I don’t care about), and if you like, screen size, but it’s barely larger than the 17 and a little smaller than the 16 Plus. Apart from that, it’s all drawbacks.

I think you have to be really bothered by the weight of the regular iPhones to get it for long-term use.

I think it’s a good upgrade from the Mini if you can lose the Ultra Wide. Obviously, especially if you like the Mini because of weight. Better battery life (a key issue of the Mini), in a thin package. Ergonomics will be tougher as it isn’t small, but the Mini’s days are counted anyway. If battery life was poor on iOS 14 and 15, it won’t be good at all on iOS 26.

Otherwise… I’m just not seeing it right now.

I’m not upgrading from my 16 Plus on iOS 1&, but if I were, I pretty much immediately rejected the Air as a possibility.

The only interesting aspect of its drawbacks is… that for the first time ever, Apple included full portrait mode on a single camera lens.

As a user of my beloved iPhone Xʀ running iOS 12 for 5.5 years, it was the only thing I missed from the Xs. It wasn’t a technical limitation after all. I wish I had it on my Xʀ.
How can you call it compromised when it has a larger screen, more RAM and faster processor in a lighter thinner package?

A faster CPU and more RAM improve the user experience at least as much as stereo speakers and an extra camera.

Air would be easily overheat then slow down or shut down, so the cpu part is not really the same as pro
