It doesn't need to be a spec monster. If it's a solid product, he gives it a solid review. The iPhone 11 was a huge upgrade over the XR and price was cut by $50.

Good point here. iPhone 13 mini significantly more usable than iPhone 12 mini. iPhone 11 much better than iPhone XR. iPhone Air 2 will probably address many of the shortcomings of the first generation, like the mono speaker.

Maybe he could be a borderline Apple employee. If you were in his position, wouldn’t you be diplomatic about the products you reviewed from a multi trillion dollar company that gave you invites and early access to products. He is running a big business of his own at this point. He’s not gonna make silly business decisions because some of you don’t think he’s objective enough.

I agree with what you said. I would rather listen to someone giving me their honest opinion then just recycling Apple's talking points from the event. If you listen to the majority of his issues with the iPhone Air they mostly center around heat dissipation and throttling from the A19 Pro chip under heavy loads, which in all honesty are very valid concerns. I have those same concerns myself.

I am not knocking the Air because these early concerns may not bear out once people get them in their hands, who knows. To be clear I do think the Air is an incredible device, and brilliant form. Very polished.

Also if you watch Marques video he does say himself that he will hold out his full opinion on the Air until he has more time to test it and live with it. These were really just his first thoughts on the device.

That’s true once a cross-section of reviews have been done and we can get a consensus on the mono speaker, the thermals, the battery, and the livability then one can make a more informed decision. But at the end of the day, you have to get what suits you. Having said all that, I’m probably going with a 17 ProMax, but I ordered an iPhone Air in space black as well. I’ll have 14 calendar days to make the decision to keep it or if expectations are not met I have the option to return it.

I want to like Air and I was looking for reasons to get it but coming from Pro models it’s a straight up downgrade in camera, battery and speakers.
Other people seemed to suggest that most people don’t care about these things but Air is still available for September 19 delivery while others are showing delivery times up to 4 weeks.

I think the conversation has gone more like

Person A: “wow the air sucks it has one camera and one speaker”
Person B: “some people, like me, don’t need the Pro speakers or pro cameras and want a light phone. If you do, good thing the Pro is available!”

I haven’t seen anyone going around saying no one cares about these features. Only that a nonzero subset exists for which the Air is the phone they want, because they value the attributes of the air over the attributes of the pro.

Any reasonable person thinks consumer choice is good. I’m glad there is an even wider variety of devices available this year for people with different wants/needs.

By far the most negative reactions I’ve seen is from people who are upset that the new shiny phone doesn’t fit their needs, even though by their own account, the Pro is perfect for them. They’re sad, because they like shiny things and they wish Apple’s new shiny thing was right for them, but it isn’t. So they’re stuck with the Pro, which is literally exactly what they need and better than it’s ever been before, but they don’t get the satisfaction of having the new hotness, and that makes them negative.

Like “damn Apple, made a phone that’s perfect for me (the Pro) but it’s so dumb they made this other thing everyone is talking about… why aren’t they talking about my phone!”

Here's a video review from Verge that just posted on YT.

I liked the battery & speaker differences.

Especially about the Pro needing a battery charge near evening hours because it draws more power than the Air.
