It’s thinner it’s specifically not more compact. This is the crux of what I don’t understand about it, people are touting it as being more compact but it just isn’t. It has less features and has a larger footprint.
Maybe you are correct since there are a few differences between compactness (less dense) and thinness (narrower, not at thick, etc.)? Now, relating to Apple's "compactness" idea, I would think that making the previous Mini and Studio cases smaller may be related to making these two products somewhat more compact? I could be wrong of course. I also assume that cooling the iPhone Air would be a little more difficult to achieve (?).
------------

On another note, what I like the most about the usefulness of my iPhone 14 is the OS (iOS), which has nothing to do with compactness of thinness.

I’m alluding to perceptions. I’m buying the Air because it has everything I need and the look I want. No short falls for me but for the consumer that’s more aligned with public opinion, maybe. 👍
Yes, a lot of buyers choose a product based on his or her needs and wants, and this is a good thing.

You’re definitely 100% right. The supposed benefits don’t outweigh the real negatives for you. Could it still be possible that for someone this is a model they like and that suits them?

Absolutely but this thread is framed as people don’t get it and that’s how I’ve framed all my responses.

The 6 Plus is a better comparison. The Air is still smaller in depth and weight.

6 Plus
Height 6.22 inch
Width: 3.06 inch
Depth .28 inch
Weight: 6.07 ounces

Air
Height 6.15 inch
Width: 2.94 inch
Depth .22 inch
Weight: 5.82 ounces
The iPhone XSMax is the Best comparison.

Consumers do understand, or at least they would, if YouTube weren’t feeding them garbage like “you must have a brick with four cameras” and “nobody asked for a thin phone,” just because MKBHD and others like him can’t see past their own use cases.

I see your point but your propaganda has to be stronger than the other guy's propaganda.

And MKBHD is borderline an Apple employee, so the sting is extra potent.

What MKBHD said wasn’t that harsh tbh, I’ve seen the YouTube video after the hands on at the Apple event. Not as bad as some people are making out.

He said “it might be a hard sell” also “once people see it and hold it, it’ll convince a lot of people to buy it” & “it may be the future of phones”

Time will tell. None are available on the Apple Store app here in the UK for launch day delivery now. 7-10 days or 2-3 weeks depending on your configuration.

Yes, Air is for those who value aesthetics over function. At least for now...
What about a light user who searches the web, texts and actually uses their iPhone for phone calls? I use my iPad Pro for most things now and am looking forward to the Fold next year. I am going to go to the store and look at the options before ordering. After last year, I have almost zero hope that Apple knows the way forward as the 16s were not good upgrades. This year, the 17 looks great and has good specs. The Air looks amazing for someone who uses their iPhone as a phone. The 17 Pro actually takes a step back for someone like me who doesn’t use a case and drops my iPhone out my pocket or off the car seat all the time, as aluminum damages really badly with one drop. But for people who use a case, need three cameras, the longest battery life, and/or the largest display, the iPhone 17 Pro Max sure seems great. The look is growing on me. After buying every year iPhone upgrade until returning a 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max, I actually may buy an iPhone this year. And if I buy one, it’s most likely going to be the Air.

Like the OP, I like the Air and I don’t see the point of super heavy, many cameras, and really thick now made from aluminum. Aluminum is actually cheaper to make than plastic… but everyone here is convinced aluminum is great. It may be great to dissipate heat, but it’s not good for an external material from my viewpoint as I don’t want to use a case and I don’t want major damage from one drop - that’s what aluminum gets.

clever idea of moving all the chips into the camera bump (at the price of having that thick bar).

Now that the "new" problem is all in one place - watch this space for a single flat chip solution. Surface lenses next ? i.e. focus, aperture etc in the top mms of the chip ? = goodbye bump.

Iphone Air is still available on launch day in Germany in all colors but white. Even in the US store, i can buy it in blue/black on launch day. This is all 256gb which i assume is the most bought tier.

So whether you like it or not is one thing - personally I like the optics.

But the price is just stupid for what you get and apparently many people feel the same. If it was 200$ cheaper, it might have sold like crazy.

thin phones are cool and people who buy the air doesn't care about high power cameras or specs i guess. but they will care about battery life thats my main issue with it.

it's not.

If Apple made the Air the 17, and made a single lens Pro version of it and only offered that, that would have been form over function.

Air is for the people who do not care bout the cameras, who do not use their phone as much as some other people.

They just are light users who do not fancy a lot of features, but they would love to get a very slim, light and interesting device that feels different.

It's like owning a 2 seater roadster as a daily driver - surely it cannot go as far as the tank is smaller and most likely not as practical because it does not have a boot or nor can it seat 4 people.

Yet noone is calling people who drive Miatas stupid for not getting the CX5.

The Air is an iP X moment for me, transitioning from the regular 6/7/8. As much as I like it a lot, I'm probably gonna wait for 2nd/3rd gen and stick with base 17/ 17 Pro this year (I'm coming from a 14 Pro).

All I can tell you is, I remember having the 6+.
Very, very similar dimensions to today’s Pro Max, felt absolutely massive in terms of size…
But the thing was so light it felt like nothing. You could toss it from hand to hand, drop it in your pocket and it still felt like nothing.
That phone was 172G.
I had the regular iPhone 6, not the Plus, but I was stunned when I fist picked it up. It felt like one of those non-working display models a carriers sometimes had. It didn’t seem possible it could be that light and still do all of the things an iPhone does. I thought it was amazing!

I actually read a post the other day saying that was the worst iPhone ever because of antenna lines.
I really did lol. I guess many of us appreciate the technology and others want to show off jewelry to their friends. 🤷🏻‍♂️
