My original post wasn't about class or money, it was about the fact that I see so many people with cracked screens there must be a large percentage of those people who don't care. And yet you don't see people driving around with cracked windshields, cracked watches, other glass items that are cracked. It's just strange to me.

I also see many people with cracked phones. However, I got a huge chunk out of my windshield the first year of owning my car. I didn't do anything about it until it was cracked from top to bottom, 12 years later. The new windshield has two chips in it that have now been filled. No plan to fix until it's noticeably cracked again. In some states, you can't pass emissions with a cracked windshield.

What does this tell you? Not a clue. Other than I see many people with cracked phones.

I'm not really sure you can correlate the two scenarios. People are paying monthly recurring charge for their phones and they tend to look at phones as a throw away commodity. Most likely they are looking to get upgrade to the next new phone and don't want throw good money towards their old phone to get it fixed. Also it can cost a lot to get the screen fixed on the phone especially when there's a high chance it will be dropped again.

Cars are different because it's high risk to drive around with a cracked windshield and it's not common that people are upgrading their cars every year as they would a cell phone. A car is not generally looked at as a throw away commodity.

One last thought: I almost never see cracked android phones! Are they less crackable??

I'm amazed how many people I see using iPhones with cracked glass. And I've got to assume it didn't just happen. And that if they bought an iPhone they can probably afford to repair it.

I saw a mom yesterday taking videos with one and then she let her 3 year old play with the cracked phone.

Are people just lazy, don't care? It's weird.

I'm going to assume you don't have any financial problems what so ever.

I have always found that when talking about cracked screens the ratio is 4 women to every 1 man I see with cracked screens.

Some probably feel like its not worth getting fixed. If you're close to getting a new one, why get the old one fixed?

Just because someone can afford to get an iPhone doesn't mean they can afford to get it fixed also. Times change and you don't know what their situation is like.

Most of all, why do you care?

yeah... go to my work, you'll see lots of them. My sister has one also.

All the people I've seen are at least middle class, most likely wealthier. I could go into boring details as to how I "know" but I do (re: the town I see this in the most). Nobody I've seen is buying used cracked phones off of Craigslist

I have sold 2 with cracked screens over the years on Ebay.... The last one was my wife's iPhone 5 on June 21st for $275. Had even 7 bids on that.

I've told people they can get it fixed for under $100 at a repair shop or DIY with a $20 part on eBay and many were shocked, they just figured it would be too expensive to fix so they never bothered. So maybe that's it.

Not everyone can afford to get it fixed. My brother fixes screens on the side and he charges a bit because of the parts he orders.

My best friend has a cracked 5S, and it hurts my heart but she's pretty limited on money. I know a few people who use their phones with cracked screens, actually. So I see your point, it's become quite common.

Based on the people I have talk to with cracked screens (quite a few since the 3G model), most don't know you can get them repaired for around $100 or don't care enough to drive to a repair shop. The "iPhone" repair shops are getting pretty popular around here and most advertise for screen repairs so maybe this trend will change.

Also, I live in an area that has a fairly low average income yet just about everyone has a smartphone. I think a lot of people are just overextending themselves with upgrade costs, accessories, and monthly bills until they can't afford repairs.

I saw a woman trying to parallel park her brand new Jaguar when she scraped up against a cement planter box. She just kept on going, putting a huge 12" gash in the fender. After she finished parking she got out of the car, looked at the fender for a second and then walked off like it was nothing. While she seemed to care less about what happened to the car, that same woman might freak out if someone spilled coffee on her Louis Vuitton bag.

The value of a specific object is different for different people.

For me the max I would pay for a screen replacement is £50. Otherwise I would rather spend £700 on a new model.

Screen replacements are expensive for what they are. At least with the iphone you can still use the phone. A cracked screen on a Sony means a dead phone as it no longer responds to touch inputs.

I didn't fix mine because I don't have time to go and backup and restore my phone. It takes a while to restore my new phone.

Most people are no where near as "intense" about their phone and do not see a crack in the screen as life or death. We, in this forum, must be reminded that it is WE that are not normal as we are a very small part of the iPhone user base. Most have no idea this forum even exists.

Under some conditions, not knowing about this place will "allow" you to enjoy you phone even more.

I don't know about a fashion statement, as posted by another member. That seems kind of odd.

The people I know who cracked their screens and there's been a few, have chosen not too, mostly due to financial reasons. Weren't able too, or were not willing to drop more money on the phone.

After three years I didn't feel it was worth repairing. Dropped my iPhone 4 over the summer and knew the iPhone 6 would be coming out in a few months. I figured I could just wait it out. It really got less bothersome as time went on, although people's reactions to seeing it are pretty amusing. They're always horrified.

This.

Some people like the reactions and/or attention. So maybe, in a way, it's like a fashion statement in that the intent is to get attention or a reaction.

Has anybody never cracked their iphone glass? Iv had the original iphone, 3GS, 4, 4S, 5, and now 6. I have dropped all except the 6 numerous times. No cracked glass, lucky i guess :D

Probably the biggest reason... People think they only paid $200 for their iPhone so they're not going to pay someone $150 just to replace the screen. They'll just wait until they're eligible for their next "$200 iPhone."

I would not assume that anyone who owns an iPhone can afford to pay for a screen repair. I would guess this is the second biggest reason why people don't ge tthem repaired.

Some people apparently just don't care.

Some people may not know it can be repaired and if they do they may not know where to have it done. I'm guessing a big part of it is just procrastination and ultimately inaction.

Guy that sits next to me at work has a Galaxy with a cracked screen. Drives me nuts. He's gone on Amazon several times and added a new screen to his cart but never pulled the trigger on ordering one even though it's less than $30. Apparently w/ Galaxy's you have to heat the glue around the edge of the screen and if you heat it too much it'll fry something inside. Doesn't sound like it's a job for those who don't know what they're doing.
