i usually don't have troubles with people touching my screen. . atleast when it's on. when i turn my lappy off, i see smudges all over my screen. i just roll my eyes and go on. i'll wipe it off. . . but i never say anything. i'm alright with people touching, just not poking. poking is a no-no. it's not a touch screen.

I HATE when people touch my screen, it drives me nuts.
Especially when they poke my screen when they are eating something.

Well I forgot to mention most of my friends are anal about touch their screens, so they don't do it.

Don't even get me started on this issue - I'm the only guy at my office with a Mac, and I am so protective of my MBP - but all the guys come in to my office to talk about the grahic/video work I'm doing, and they touch the screen!!! I've told them about this, and now they do it on purpose?

If I murdered them, I'd have a good case wouldn't I?

there's not a jury in the land that would convict you. . . assuming they're all mac users. but when they come close, just break their fingers. that would teach 'em a lesson. .

OK, here's a story you'll like.

I have a G4 cube with one of the 15" LCDs, like the first ones Apple ever sold, probably. They weigh a lot. Probably 2-3 kg. They also come with round speakers, about 10cm diameter. One day, I think I was trying to reach over the back of the screen to put something in or take something out of the USB ports of the screen, when I unfortunately tipped it too far forward. Now, I can't remember if the legs slipped backwards, or if It just slipped out of my fingers, but it fell forwards, and landed (with a very loud thud) on one of the speakers. Then, the computer (which was on at the time) shut down, whic naturally frieked me out (considerably). I believe it was probably just the mouse wire touching the power button or something, causing a force shutdown, but the terror it caused was quite extraordinary. Anyway, long story short, there is a slight impact mark on the screen now, that is only kind of visible in some special conditions and viewing angles, and is only as bad as the sag lines of the screen.

So, how much force can you put on an LCD screen before they screw up? Quite a lot. So unless someone is punching your screen, you have nothing to worry about.

Here's a desktop picture I made for screen-touch-nazis a year or so ago. Enjoy!

A few years back I bought a new iMac

My wife pointed to something on the screen with her ink pen in her hand and WROTE ON MY SCREEN

OK... I'm calming down again

Touching the screen? You have to be kidding, I loose it when someone touches my computer; I get out my sword when they touch my screen. No, I do not have anger issues.

I have always wondered why people can't point without physically touching the screen. Drives me crazy.

I tend to touch my screen......

Its a horrible habit.

If it was glossy, that would be another issue.

It's our fault for having pretty computers.

But seriously - even when I had one of those clunky PC laptops I hated people touching my screen.

Part of my job of having my MBP is letting volunteers use it on a Sunday morning - they leave metal pens on the palm rest areas, it makes me crazy! I'm like a parent leaving their child with someone they don't trust!

I work in teams frequently and i'm usually the one who brings a laptop to log all the brainstorming sessions (im usually a team leader) and naturally everyone in the team has this habit of poking my screen to point something out to the others "This one.." "oh you mean that one...yeah but lets add this one" and at the end of everything my screen looks marred and i have to break out the iKlear.

Usually i say "oi!...dont poke the screen...you risk damaging it" but they never listen. Now i just let it go...iKlear does a good job anyway

I hate it when people touch my MBP's screen. It's glossy and easily attracts fingerprints. Seriously, if you have something to point out, why not point to it, instead of poking the screen? I get tired of wiping it every time someone touches it.

I'm with you on this, purely for the smudges. You aren't going to damage it even with a little bit of sustained pressure. That's actually a method to get rid of stuck pixels, which I've successfully done on a cousin's Gateway monitor. Of course that's not pressing very hard, enough that the distortion of the LCD is seen.

This is my major pet-peeve with my MacBook, the screen gets dirty enough from regular use, and the only thing that seems to be able to remove a finger smudge for me is the cloth that came with the computer that I left at home, which leaves me with an annoying smudge on the computer screen for the rest of the day. But when it happens I just ask them not to touch it in a somewhat pissed off mood (it always seems to work).

But in means of the OP's screen, I wouldn't worry about it. The screens at our school are absolutely abused by all the students and they don't seem to show any wear, and they are 3+ years old too. But then again, they are also Dells which may be made completely different than Apple's screens.

I used to have an old Dell laptop, first laptop I ever owned, I was in 5th grade. Anyway, I liked to touch my screen, a lot. Later in its life, I noticed there were large blue-tinted patches... so yes, at least on cheap old Dells, touching the screen will mess it up, but not for a while. After becoming technically inclined a few years later, I now place a sticky note on my displays to deter "touchers" from doing exactly what their name implies. This will go into strict enforcement once I get an ACD for my Mac Pro. (and no, my screen isn't that dim, it's the flash)

Great idea with the sticky note. So simple, yet it could be very effective. I will have to do that once I get a MacBook or MacBook pro for myself so when I leave it unwatched at home my family members don't go all touchy touchy on it.

Y'know what annoys me? People who go nuts when someone touches their screen.

No offense. :p

Sometimes when I'm showing someone something on my laptop they point to something (and its usually quicker or unsuspected that I can't stop them) and they touch the screen.

In this instance, I give serious consideration to depriving said person of the offending digit.

I don't know why but I have a serious need for screens I use to be clean. When I bought my new phone a few months ago, the guy in the store got t out to install the SD card I bought with it when I didn't ask him to, and his fingers went all over the screen... I nearly hit him lol.

Touching my screen is perhaps the fastest way to annoy me. Next to that, would be the guests who use my Mac Pro to bear their weight as they are apparently to lazy to hold their weight with their own legs. I've got a slight mark in my Mac Pro from one who leaned on it (though it's probably only noticeable to me).

Hands off.

I hate cleaning LCD screens. Getting the screen perfectly clear and free of marks and smudges and such is a pain. I have to clean it, then buff it and buff it and buff it until I get all the lines out of the screen from cleaning it.

I miss glass screens where you just wiped it clean and then wiped the cleaner away and there were no streaks, smudges, or marks left at all.

Don't touch my LCD screen. I don't appreciate the 15 to 30 minutes to get it cleaned properly again.

Sure, many are probably less particular about a perfectly smudge free surface. But, if I clean it, it will be like new before I call it good. So, please don't touch my screen, I don't want to clean it.

Oh, for the normal daily dust, I will use a can of compressed air to blow it away. This way I can extend time between actually surface cleanings that require me to work at getting a nice even surface again. I only have to break out the liquid cleaners and special cloth's when someone touches (or worse spits) on the screen. I hate it when people spit when they talk.
