Double spaces after periods are also grammatically correct. Only in recent years did the one space become acceptable. I think one space looks like ass, and can't stand how websites force the two spaces down to one. I would never, ever submit anything written with a single space between sentences.

Double spaces after periods are only correct with monospaced fonts (like the kinds used on typewriters). Nowadays computer typesetting programs automatically place the correct amount of space after a period with only a single space. If you don't believe me take a look at any book or magazine.

Double spaces after full stops was some short term typesetting issue in the US and never made it to this side of the Atlantic. As you can see from your quoted text above, it looks awful in modern print.

Nice try, but the editor is one step ahead of you.

You say this is not easier to read??

Double spacing after a period doesn't bother me.
Double spacing in a document though? That pisses me off.

The sudden ubiquitousness of Susan ****ing Boyle's utter abomination of Perfect Day

Microsoft Word certainly doesn't. One space after a period in MS Word, is one space.

One space after a period looks like total crap IMO. Been doing two spaces my whole life, and have never learned to do it any other way, nor have any PhDs ever told me otherwise.

It sure does look awful in modern print as in my quoted message, since the editor reduced it to one space, eh?

lol.:D

When you're watching TV with someone, and then when commercials come on, they just switch the channel to something else until a commercial comes on there, and so on.

None of your PHDs were designers, were they? They may be very well qualified in their respective fields, but if they're using two spaces after a period then they're definitely not qualified in typography.

As much as I hate to cite wikipedia:

wikipedia said:
With the introduction of proportional fonts in computers, double sentence spacing became obsolete. These proportional fonts now assign appropriate horizontal space to each character (including punctuation marks), and can modify kerning values to adjust spaces following terminal punctuation, so there is less need to manually increase spacing between sentences. From around 1950, single sentence spacing became standard in books, magazines and newspapers.Regardless, many still believe that double spaces are correct. The debate continues, notably on the World Wide Web—as many people use search engines to try to find what is correct. Many people prefer double sentence spacing for informal use because that was how they were taught to type. There is a debate on which convention is more legible, and the few recent direct studies have produced inconclusive results

Computers tend to make things easier. If two spaces were actually required after a period then some computer programmer would have probably made it automatically happen so you wouldn't have to waste your time hitting the spacebar twice. It turns out they sort of have.

I was taught in elementary school to do the double space after periods. My teachers were probably taught by their teachers that the double space was correct. They all learned to type on typewriters though. I always thought it was a bit funny looking but accepted it since my teachers told me it was right. It wasn't until I got to design school that I learned I had been taught correctly.

I'll say it again: look in any modern book or magazine and see for yourself.

I do that all the time when watching live sporting events. With regular TV programs, the commercials are all on at about the same time, so it won't work. With a DVR to use, I don't do it as much as I used to.

I'm peeved when three live events are all in commercial breaks at the same time!

Interesting discussion on the periods. I always type with two spaces after a period. I just decided to type a paragraph with single spaces after a period in TextEdit. I tried numerous fonts to see what it looked like. I couldn't stand it, as I had a hard time visibly seeing the sentence breaks. I didn't notice any extra space after the period, as some people have mentioned here.

I guess when you already have a hard enough time reading with some sort of dyslexia, not being able to see sentences clearly makes it even worse. I will continue to use the double spaces.

OK, back on topic:
1. YouTube videos of TV shows that are made by some guy using his cell phone to record the TV, instead of somehow transferring the recording to the computer. It wouldn't be so bad if these people weren't completely incapable of shooting straight on or holding the phone even partially still. Source: pretty much every Family Guy clip.

2. That TV broadcasters haven't figured out, after decades, that pro football games always take longer than 3 hours, yet only allot 3 hours of TV time to them. Thus everything afterwards gets pushed back. Annoys the crap out of me.

The same holds true for the visually impaired, so I too will continue to do so. :p

When you tell somebody that you read some bit of information on Wikipedia, and they go, "Oh…Wikipedia? That makes sense…"

Obviously you can't trust Wikipedia for your chemistry lab report, but in everyday stuff? Wikipedia is extremely valid if you use it right (look for citations and stuff). People need to get off it's dick.

I completely agree. I personally find Wikipedia very well written for most things with lots of references and sources. With more 'serious' things it's best to use multiple sites, and then you can get the most accurate information.

When people talk as if they think they are extremely computer technical and they say things like:

"I just have to upload the file to my computer" (When they are downloading a file)

"You just need more ram" (People really think adding more ram makes everything SUPER fast when their computer is slowing down)

"You need a new graphics card" (When your monitor is clearly broken and has dead pixels etc)

One of my friends... (this is no lie no exageration or anything...) when we were about 13 (we are 21 now) his monitor didnt turn on and he said "Its because my printer is out of ink"

-_- I am not joking... that same guy went to college years later did I.C.T and then did it at Uni too. He still doesnt know what RAM is or a Bios or the difference between PCI-E and AGP.

edit: Also people who are still stuck at pentium 4 days who say "Its faster coz its got my GHZ"
