Did you guys see that I posted that you can get a 3rd gen iPad for $50 more than the freaking Mini?? There is no way the currently spec'd Mini is worth it's price when you factor in that a full blown retina display equipped A5X iPad is only $50 more...

Then why would they always promote they are for Teachers and School systems?
If you think School Budgets are huge like Apple I have a bridge to sell you.

A number of schools have had no issues with Apple's pricing on these items.

If you don't agree and you are going to stick to some firm number then go buy whatever fits that requirement. Apple isn't likely to bend over for you and give you an extreme discount just cause you demand it or cry that you got your kiddies all Kindle Fires or whatever. They'll be too busy selling that 1400 iPads to someone else.

People won't be paying extra because of build quality or specs. People will pay extra to remain in the ecosystem.

Actually neither.
A $299 price point to break the metal barrier of $300.
32GB at $329 or $349 would have been nice.
But as it stands, an iPad mini is 70% more expensive than a Nexus 7 with a similar configuration of 32GB.

The mini is for someone that would only buy an iPad, but wants it smaller.
Hey a 3rd gen iPad refurb is only $379. Now, that is compelling.........

I suspect a refurb iPad mini will be in the $275 range when they become available.

The mini is there to create a midrange market, not compete with the Nexus. Right now no midrange market exists, which is why everyone is confused. Everyone's trying to compare it to $200 budget tablets or $500 premium tablets. But Apple is not trying to compete in either sector - it's trying to expand the market by creating a third sector.

They did the same thing with the iPod line - released the iPod Mini right after the Classic to grow the midrange market. Then a year later released the Shuffle, which was their actual budget product

Stop talking about hardware people. This iPad is far superior when it comes to quality compared to anything else out there. AND, nothing is even remotely close to the app store ecosystem; that alone is with an extra 30-100 IMO.
Nice to see that somebody actually gets it. The vast majority of people don't give a fat rat's arse about hardware. They want a product that works well out-of-the-box.

I had totally hoped for a $299 iPad Mini, as it fit so well in their price increments. Then I saw the BOM for iPads. The iPad Mini is not necessarily cheaper to make than the iPad2 - it could be more expensive. In any case, the BOM (raw cost of parts) was estimated around $250,

Setting aside the fact that those numbers were not released by Apple and could be way off in either direction they also don't include other potential costs like labor to build the ipads, licensing fees coming on top of those built into any of the components etc. So the final per unit price could be much greater than the $250 on those estimates.

Euro isn't doing all that well against the dollar right now.

Right now, as in the last few minutes? Ask an American traveling in the eurozone if stuff doesn't look really expensive to them, spending their diminished dollars on equivalent European goods. When the euro was established not so long ago, the value was pegged at one euro to one USD, and for awhile the dollar rose above that exchange rate. Look at the exchange rate now, at around $1.30 to the euro. Just because the euro isn't trading near its all-time high doesn't mean that the euro is valued unfavorably against the dollar. It certainly is not, and not especially in light of the European monetary crisis and recession. What you should be asking yourself is why the euro is still relatively so valuable against the dollar.

3) iOS is dated and inferior, always playing ketchup on Android features.

Heinz or Hunt's?

Android has always been 2-3 years ahead, e.g. copy/paste, multitasking, wireless sync, voice command, folders, widgets, LTE...

You nailed it. Android has always been 2-3 years ahead. Particularly since the iPhone came out in 2007 and Android was still a year away from release (no doubt busily copying iPhone UI features).

Did Android get screen capture yet?

The best part about Android is the blessing of throwing your device in the trash whenever you want to upgrade to the latest OS version. Awesome!

Yep, my co-worker just committed $50 an iPad mini to help her in-laws buy iPad minis for each of her kids so they could get that instead of Kindle Fires. She said exactly what you just mentioned...she wanted to keep her music, books, etc all with Apple because eventually they will be old enough to have iPhones instead of iPod Touches.

I for one think its a rip off, $249 to $299 TOPS. Thanks to the overpriced, in sufficient hardware, especially resolution it made my buying the Kindle Fire HD that much easier.

This is what everyone says as the are entering their credit card information. It is what they said about the original iPod, about the iPod Mini, About the iPod Nano, About the 5G iPod Touch, about the Retina Macbook, and yet (mysteriously) they sell and sell well.

Clearly Apple is not targeting people who want a $100 "tablet." I bought my sister a 7 inch Android tablet in England, and she loves it, but my 7 year old nephew wanted an iPad because Android did not have the games he wanted to play. I'll probably buy my mother one for her crossword and sudoku puzzles, but the jury is out on whether I would trade my 64GB iPad 3 for the Mini since I just bought a 64GB 5G Touch for my pocket.

My life must be bizarro world not being trapped like that.

And the patent ruling that invalidated the patent that formed the cornerstone of Apple's court victory over Samsung. Don't forget about that.

The irony on that detail being that it was only a prelim judgment that the patent might be invalid. Not a final and binding one. It could still go Apple's way.

And even if that one patent is invalidated, the court case involved like 10 different patents. In the end, they remove damages assigned for this one patent the rest still stand. Koh uses her legal authority and trebles the remaining damages and Apple still comes out ahead of the game and getting a huge payout from Samsung. And even if she doesn't, Apple wasn't really in this for the money so much as the precedent on the patents they did win. Same game they played with letting Psystar continue to try inane defense after defense instead of demanding a summary judgement. Apple wanted all that nonsense on the books as invalid so if someone else was tempted to try it they would know that it would be shot down under precedent.

You're basing midrange on price point then? Because as far as functionality/display/etc - I wouldn't call some of what you consider "budget" to be lacking. They are quite feature rich - just lower cost.

I think that's part of the confusion - and the same will happen with the average Joe and Jane. They won't see a sole entry "midrange" - they'll see (now) three price points. And they will ask themselves what is compelling about going mid-range. If they want something "small" they can get something at a lower cost. If they want a bigger tablet - they can go for the iPad/other bigger tablets.

I could be way off base - and very well could be - but this mid-range "market" is going to be tougher to crack than I think you think it is.

That being said - Apple will sell a crapload of these. But not because of the fact it's midrange. But because it's Apple and people want a smaller form factor and to stay in the iOS ecosystem.

Am I mistaken, or do the nexus 7 and kindle HD have better screen resolutions than the iPad mini? I would take a nexus 7 any day over an iPad mini.

I'm still a little baffled. I mean it's essentially a 7.9" iPad2...so why can't the iPad2 run Siri but the iPad Mini can?

Because they want you to go out and buy the new thing...or there could be some internal issues with running Siri on the iPad2. I guess we will never really know. But I have been an apple fan for almost 8 years and I think they do everything they can to retro fit all new software developments in iOS and Mac OS. So I am going to trust that they did it for a reason

I believe Screen Capture came across the board with 4.0. Purchasing from the mothership is really your best bet for Android. Then again the most demanding application I use on my phone is Youtuve or kana flash cards.

Apple can charge what they want obviously.

I'm just honestly stunned that so many people here are willing to pay that amount for something that you *know* is going to be significantly refreshed with retina, and possibly sooner than later given how fast Apple replaced the iPad 3. I really am, especially having seen what a difference it makes. I never, ever surfed the web in portrait mode on the iPad 1. On the 3 I can do it with ease. Reading text is absolutely wonderful - it's just that the 3 is too big to use as a primary ereader.

The more people that sit it out due to the screen, the faster Apple will want to refresh or at least drop the price. But so be it, it's not my money.

What People Care About

Nice to see that somebody actually gets it. The vast majority of people don't give a fat rat's arse about hardware. They want a product that works well out-of-the-box.

While that's true.
They do care about memory and they will look at the price of the mini and compare it to the Nexus 7 or Kindle HD and find that for less than $260 you get twice the storage for movies and such. This also happens to be $170 less than a similarly equipped iPad mini.

The real question is will people pay a 65-70% premium? Some will and a lot won't. I won't. I'm an Apple share holder and in my house we have 4 Macs, 2 iPods, 2 iPads. I also have 3 Android phones in my house because Apple too so dang long to up the screen size on an iPhone. So in terms of form factor of devices Apple is behind the curve and trying to play catch up. If released with the initial iPad3 then it might be compelling. The mini is a year too late and $150 or so too expensive for the 32GB version. The 16GB version is a non starter.

Yeah you can give me all the talk about a midrange, but at $429 or a 32GB model that is not midrange for a 7"-ish tablet. It's premium.

Sure, but the original judgement (subject to appeal) seemed to result a bidding frenzy for AAPL at that moment. At any given moment, markets are trading on emotions and guesswork, not on concrete realities.

Wait - so you're saying that just like the iPhone - that it makes sense for people, if they want the most updated and official release of Android - they should buy a phone from the manufacturer/OS creator. Why that's so crazy! Imagine!

/sarcasm

Cutting-edge! :)
Yeah it beats having to root your device for it. It is going to be an even bigger mess after the 29th with Microsoft and Google both getting their releases out.

Lately, even Android manufacturers are slimming down their product lines to entry, mid, and high end models. Unless you are Samsung. They seem to have yet another model every other week.

Cutting-edge! :)

you're the one that brought up feature that while nice - isn't a do-or die.

Tell me - how many iterations of iOS came out before cut/paste. And how many on Android?

Between you and I - I think cut and paste is a leeeeeetle more relevant to users needs than screen capturing. Don't you?
