I know I'm in a minority (heck - I still have/love my iPad 1st generation and haven't seen any real need to upgrade yet) - but for me it's about what the device can do for me/what I can do with it more than whether it's a premium product based on design/specs.

A Ford gets you from point A to point B right? And so does an Aston Martin.

I'm not sure if these comments are serious, or just some trolls posting all kind of ********, but EVERY spec in the iPad mini is far superior to the Kindle HD or any other product in that category.

There's a reason Apple is so far ahead in sales. it is the same reason they were so far ahead with the iPod. Every company tried to come out with a crappy knock-off (Dell DJ anyone?) thinking all they had to do was to undercut the iPod and people would flock to it like they had done for Windows.

It no longer work that way.

People are now much more knowledgable about technology than they were in the 80's. There is also now the possibility of testing these products in person in Apple stores or any other point of sale. Hold an iPad, then hold ANY other plastic piece of garbage. It does not even compare.
When the HP one went on liquidation at 99$, my boss drove me to our nearest Best buy to get one. OMG, after 15 minutes of playing with it we just left. The screen was godawful, small text was hard to read, the operating system was crap, the gyros would turn the screen vertical or horizontal at the slightest little twitch of the device...

Fanboys are ridiculous, MILLIONS upon MILLIONS of people worldwide are not. If those android et all ****wares were better, they would sell better. The reality is that they are vastly inferior, in every way. You may not like the price, but the truth is better software and better hardware cost. You might be kids who never operated a business, but every option you offer you charge extra. That's the way it works. If you can't pay for it, just don't buy it and move on.

have you seen the specs of the nexus 7 at $199?...totally different league. I am mostly disappointed with the screen not being retina. As a reader it will be great, but not going retina is a poor choice. I would pay $600 for the thing if it was a mini 4th gen ipad or even ipad 3

Retina is just hogher resolution

A6 is nothng special

Fusion drive is already being done in simular rashion.

Its great apple is once more moving forward, but i rather see 3 hybrid drives tupe advancements, then the " its thinner then before" wich even infected the desktops , whats next, a super thin mac pro ?

It may be "just" a higher definition, however, apple was the first to propose it on its tablets, same answer for fusion drive.

The A6 is a significant improvement, actualy the only processors competiting it, are the snapdragon S4 pro which are not based on a Cortex A9 nor an A15 architecture.

A Ford gets you from point A to point B right? And so does a Bentley.

Right. Your point? Because mine is - I would most likely choose the Ford over a Bentley. 1) it's more economical. 2) better gas mileage 3) I live in NYC and insurance would be through the roof for the Bentley. 4) The Bentley is far more likely to get stolen or vandalized 5) the Ford has a lower total cost of ownership 6) I can get the Ford serviced almost anywhere

You really want to throw out a crappy car analogy?

Oh my gosh, did your iPad 3 just magically stop working yesterday? If it did you should send it in for repair... :)
You don't understand. He might be able to fly under the radar for a few days, but once someone notices that his iPad has the 30-pin connector instead of Lightning, word will spread like wildfire. He will lose 4.3 social status points and be demoted to Level 2 Uncool. That means you're practically a pariah. Girls won't touch you with a 40 foot pole and old ladies will spit in your face. Well-hocked loogies, the greenish brown type.

No, it doesn't. The iPad mini starts at 1449 zloty incl. 23% VAT = 447 USD.
The price excl. VAT is 1178 zloty = 367 USD.

Here in Sweden we have 25%, and here the iPad mini starts at 2995 SEK incl. VAT (447 USD) = 2396 SEK excl. VAT (357 USD).

So the difference between US/Poland is actually $38... not $171.

Those $38 are "we hate foreigners"-tax, that's normal and not unique to Apple.

Correct up until the last statement. What you are seeing is not unique to Apple because it isn't actually happening. It is a function of the weak US dollar.

I see this all the time..

Apple products have been overpriced for years, but yet people still buy them. This is nothing new. Apple could have lowered the price if they want, but they already know, its the holidays and people see $329 and iPad name and immediately want one.

I see this all the time. Apple products are overpriced people say. I can get a computer with better specs for less they say, etc. But they are missing the point. Nearly every product category has a range of products available. Be it clothes, cars, TVs, computers, whatever. Is the $5.00 burger at my local burger joint over priced because McD's across the road sells burgers for $1.00-$3.00? No, because, to me and to others, the extra money is worth it to get a burger that is made from fresh beef vs frozen. To eat in a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere. To have the food cooked to order instead of waiting under a heat lamp. This applies to most, if not all, products. Can you get a product by another company (be it a tablet, laptop, desktop, whatever) for less from another company than from Apple. Of course you can. Are the cheaper ones as good? Maybe sometimes, in some ways. Maybe not in other ways. There are other premium brands as well. As a real world personal example, my work laptop is a Sony VGN-Z550N. 13", lightweight, really nice. Best work laptop I have had by far. It cost ~ $1,695.00 three years ago. Just after I got it, I bought a personal MacBook Pro. VERY similar spec. but with the typical solid Apple build, unibody construction, etc. It cost $1,149.00. Nearly $550 LESS for Apple than the Sony. Bottom line, Apple is a premium brand, just like Sony, BMW, Starbucks, etc. The difference is that Apple does not sell cheaply made items. Sony sells the premium laptops like my work one, and they sell cheaper ones too. Apple only sells the premium ones. Nothing wrong with that.

A stupid move in my opinion .... Apples out pricing itself.

While other makers are slashing prices to gain market share, apple is to relaxed in their current market and havent brought anything new to the table.

If Apple had said this is the new tablet with this new feature .... maybe it could have justified the price tag. But 329 for a half ass / 2 generations ago pad is a bad move by apple.

We'll see...:)

I think most people (and I include myself in this) are better staying away from poor analogies. For example - your McDonald's (fresh vs frozen).

This is what happens when a company :apple: succeed and have billions of dollars simply they become greedy selfish and ignoring average customers financial situation, because not only rich people have rights to buy entertainment accessories and enjoy their lives but for sure if they continue like that the failure waiting them at the end of the tunnel.

Nobody has no peak, they are climbing up the peak now but if they don't change their price insane policy inevitably they will fall down again in just 7-10 years.

The "correct" price is whatever Apple thinks will be the best compromise between lost sales and margins. It's amusing to see the extraordinary amount of entitlement displayed in these forums when people insist that Apple's price should be lower.

Apple's strategy is different than Amazon and Google whose aim is to sell media content/ads while sacrificing margins. You'll notice that Samsung does not employ this same strategy - they don't have content/ads to sell. As a consumer you may simply compare price and that's fine - Apple knows there will be a certain number of people who won't buy it just because it's not under $300. But Apple has a pretty large installed base of iOS users who will find it nice that any content they buy will be usable across the multiple devices they already have. I'd imagine these people would pony up the extra $30. As an added bonus, the hardware also happens to be quite nice (bigger screen AND lighter than all the others).

So let me get this right ... the day before the event you could own an iPad 2 for $399. The day after, you get the same thing in a great new form factor with better cameras for $70 less. And you guys are complaining?

And those disappointed with it not having a retina display ... it will never happen and for good reason. The PPI has already gone up simply by going to the smaller screen, so you're half way there. And you will never have the iPad 3/4 retina resolution at that size. It won't work for the app ecosystem of 1024 and 2048 pixels.

It seems people just like to complain.

Nothing new here....

I usually love apple products and i am usually quite excited about what they present to us...but the iPad 4th gen. was EXTREMELY unnecessary and the iPad mini just seems to be apple wanting to have a device in the mini tablet category...the 3 updates in the 4th gen. iPad and the at least 2 year old technology in the over priced iPad mini makes them both unattractive...plus as apple just showed us...if you buy an iPad mini or iPad 4th gen. in 6 or 7 months there will be another new device thats "revolutionary" and what you bought today is just outdated

That is always the case with technology. Whatever you buy now will be supplanted relatively soon. It has always been that way and always will be. You can NEVER have the "latest" or the "best" for long. But ask yourself this. Does my "outdated" ipad (laptop, desktop) etc. still do what I need it to do? If it does, then is it REALLY outdated. People get so hung up on the latest and greatest that they can't enjoy a fully functional product they have that still does everything they need, just because it is not the latest version.

I don't think Apples success has anything to do with its pricing model. It has not changed much for years ( Probably with some exceptions ) It has, however, reduced substantially its own software like Mac OSX, FCP X ect. Making most of it up through its hardware sales.

Apple was always considered a premium brand. Changing its model to lower priced hardware now puts it against low priced competitors with razor thin profit margins.

I think it's a little bit high in price. $299 would have appealed to a lot more.

The PROBLEM is that various rumors tagged it at $249 and people hung onto that price. But that was just silly, the iPod Touch is $299 (although it's 32GB and retina), so it wasn't likely it was going to come in much cheaper than that.

That's pricing it like the iPod Touch. Wouldn't look too good.

And if you were CEO of Apple you'd do the exact same thing. Money talks pal.

Could we get Phil Schiller's input why the iPod HiFi was priced so ridiculously high since were on the topic? $400 for a crappy speaker was insane.

Which is why nobody buys anything but Fords. Analogies go into crisis the moment they are stated. They rarely hold up. Very few product buying decisions are based on price alone. The vast majority are value propositions. Apple has been getting the value proposition very right for quite a number of years now. It's a talent that shows up in their earnings.

lol at relating a Bentley to an iDevice, it's nowhere near the level of luxury, stop kidding yourself

I almost bought it...

but no retina screen = no purchase for me. The bottom line is that Apple will sell a boat load of these. Then next next year it will have a retina display and they will sell a butt load more....Some people on this forum crack me up...Apple has proved time and time again that they are MASTERS of marketing and this time is no different. If you like it, buy it and pay the Apple tax, if not, wait a little bit till their marketing sucks you in to purchase it.

And there you go, you don't have the money to spend on indulgence and luxury.

Really? That's what you got from my list? Whether or not I can afford it is irrelevant. Whether I choose to spend my money on that is. It's pretty arrogant to assume that just because I buy a Ford over a Bentley that means I don't have the money to spend on indulgence and luxury. Since you like bad analogies - I guess Mark Zuckerberg can't afford nice clothes because he dresses in t-shirts, jeans and hoodies when there are so many nicer more expensive clothes of better value he could be wearing.

Wow.

Indeed.

Exactly.

Obviously to get the point across using a night and day example.. Surely you wouldn't take it seriously.

Fords are bought by clueless individuals with absolutely no taste in quality.
