As for people complaining about the iPad 4 update coming so soon, I wonder if it's a move to free up 2013 to be the year of iTV. It seems that both the smartphone and tablet markets are maturing and while the growth will probably continue to be good for the next couple of years thanks to international growth, I'd imagine Apple must be looking to open up a new platform. The logical next step is TV.

And those disappointed with it not having a retina display ... it will never happen and for good reason. The PPI has already gone up simply by going to the smaller screen, so you're half way there. And you will never have the iPad 3/4 retina resolution at that size. It won't work for the app ecosystem of 1024 and 2048 pixels.

It seems people just like to complain.

The PPI went "up" but only to the PPI of the old 3gs iPhone, right?

I think iPad Scrabble with a few of it's smaller buttons and text on it won't translate perfectly to a iPad mini. I think some of the text with be a little hard to read on it and I'm sure the same goes for a few others.

At some point, I'm sure apple will support some more resolutions. Maybe when they hit a iOS that doesn't support older iPhone/iPod touches they'll add a new resolution to the mix.

Most of the app(lication)s on my computer are smart enough to scale to different size screens (with no consistency) and now are adapting to retina displays at the same time. I'm sure the iOS programmers will figure out ways to handle it too.

We don't know how much actual RAM the iPad mini will have yet until the teardowns. Unless they've released that info already.

More cores means blah blah blah. Ok...sure. But I like how you ignored my request to show real examples of how this is better on say the Nexus 7 and how it runs circles around something like the iPad. Yes, more cores theoretically would make things faster, but who cares if nothing takes advantage of it. Since there's no software to do a head-to-head comparison to show how 4-cores in a tablet blows away 2 cores in the iPad, we're all talking out of our a$$es.

Which I expected everyone to do when I wrote that. Glad I wasn't disappointed.

I see you deleted your previously post but you were talking about storage space and yes we already know about the storage space. I did not say that the Nexus had more RAM than the iPad Mini.

What you expected of an answer and what your question asked are two different things apparently. You asked what would two extra cores would do and I answered. Formulate your question better next time. You never asked for benchmark scores.

Apple has proved time and time again that they are MASTERS of marketing and this time is no different. If you like it, buy it and pay the Apple tax, if not, wait a little bit till their marketing sucks you in to purchase it. :rolleyes:

It takes much more then ads to sell a product. First off it has to be a good product. If it is a great product, it will eventually sell itself, ad's or no ad's. Often by word of mouth alone.

I think Phil will eat those words by the next Mini release. They will crunch the numbers after the holidays and I think that will force them to make a change.

The comparable Kindle Fire is $214 (assuming you don't want ads on your lock screen).

Don't get me wrong. The mini has some nice advantages over that Kindle, but $115 is a huge difference in price (and the mini is slightly worse in a couple of ways too).

lol at relating a Bentley to an iDevice, it's nowhere near the level of luxury, stop kidding yourself

You don't understand. He might be able to fly under the radar for a few days, but once someone notices that his iPad has the 30-pin connector instead of Lightning, word will spread like wildfire. He will lose 4.3 social status points and be demoted to Level 2 Uncool. That means you're practically a pariah. Girls won't touch you with a 40 foot pole and old ladies will spit in your face. Well-hocked loogies, the greenish brown type.

He has the right to be pissed. He paid a large sum for the supposed 'cutting-edge' product and a month later they release a 'better' product.

I think at some point (maybe a year or two) it will be possible to get a 2048x1536 7.9" screen at an acceptable price point and power consumption rate to use in the iPad mini.

Sorry Phil, the pricing is very hard to swallow considering the hardware is 2 generations behind your latest iPad and well below that of the competitors (Nexus 7)!

Not sure how it's 2 generations behind cos from what I've seen, it looks to be better than the iPad 2 in every way except the screen size, and even there you're getting a higher ppi so some would consider that an improvement.

And since the iPad 2 already offers a smoother and more polished UI than the Nexus 7, does it really matter what's underneath the hood? IMO, the only UX where Nexus wins is ppi, but with the mini's larger display, that might be a wash.

Well, coincidentally an iPad mini w/ Retina would have the exact same PPI as the iPhone (326), so the supplier is already shipping displays with the appropriate pixel density. It's not some wild futuristic thing, it's bigger chunks of a panel that's been in iPhones for 2 years. They just want everyone to buy the lo-res Mini first and then make them buy the same thing all over again when it's Retina-fied.

Yep, my co-worker just committed $50 an iPad mini to help her in-laws buy iPad minis for each of her kids so they could get that instead of Kindle Fires. She said exactly what you just mentioned...she wanted to keep her music, books, etc all with Apple because eventually they will be old enough to have iPhones instead of iPod Touches.

This makes me kind of sad.

I don't buy stuff with DRM if it is something I might want to access in the future.
(Well, DRM'd stuff is workable if it can be stripped if needed).
It's annoying sometimes, but DRM schemes come and go. It's better to avoid lock-in.

And phone apps that suck, no LTE. Enjoy your plastic toy.

The plastic backing of the N7 is nicer to hold than the current iPad backings. No idea what the "phone apps" comment refers, no shortage of tablet apps for the N7.

I have both N7 and iPads - neither product sucks - they're both very very good. Over time I've found myself using the iPads less and the N7 more, other people may find the opposite.

Apple has always been about better design then cutting-edge.

Obviously. They products look great, but, from a technical standpoint, pale in comparison with their counterparts (N7 in this case). And people calling it a 'plastic piece of crap' make me giggle.

Exactly. Most people (reviewers and users) prefer the backing.

1. Apple could have dealt a death blow to Amazon & Google with the proper pricing of the iPad mini. Instead, Apple gave them a Christmas gift with Apple's blessing. Makes no sense.

2. Why would anyone buy the iPad mini when they can get a REAL iPad for only $70 more? Makes no sense.

If there was a 12" iPad for $70 more than the current one, does that make it the ideal purchase if simply because of the small price difference? No, since you might not want that form factor anyway.

There will be people who want the mini for its form factor... and don't want the big one even if it was the same price.

Replacement

Code:
$330 - iPad Mini
$100 - Applecare for iPad (?)
$ 50  - replacement charge
=====
$480 TOTAL for original and replacement iPad

$200 - Nexus
$200 - replacement Nexus
=====
$400 TOTAL for original and replacement Nexus

It's true that if Junior broke TWO tablets, the Apple would come out cheaper above :)

As for convenience, most people don't live near an Apple Store, but do have a nearby Sears, Staples, Gamestop, Best Buy or other place to buy a Nexus replacement.

Just playing devil's advocate. Not everything is black and white.

You forgot about SquareTrade.... $89 for 3 years.

I want a smaller form factor tablet that is 4G LTE capable .. I can buy a 7.7 inch Galaxy Tab with an AMOLED screen from Verizon today for $400, an iPad mini without retina will set me back $459. I love my iPad 3 & would enjoy also having a smaller tablet for commuting but not for the price they're asking.
