Does the 13 inch model get the new updated keyboard, or is it just the new 16 inch? Meaning, those butterfly keys.

I can imagine that several people's number one complaint about the Mac Pro will be its price. I wonder if Apple will listen and address the desktop market in the $2k to $4k range.

And another thing: Apple seriously needs to bring modularity back in some form, even if they don't offer it on all models. If I spend over $2k on a notebook, why on earth can I not upgrade it (SSD/RAM) when the time comes? Boggles my mind.
shouldn't boggle your mind. we all know why.

How about Phill Schiller you talk about the obscene price overcharging for RAM and SSD prices?

The only reason is GREED. That is the only reason Apple is still soldering the components so they can rip off customer big time! It is not security or reliability. We are simply tired of the overcharging over 100 - 200%

Upgrading 16GB RAM to 32 +$400.00
Upgrading SSD 512 to 1TB +$200.00
(I can get a top of the line external 2TB SSD for $270 and internals are actually cheaper)

Top of the line 2TB SSD upgrades run $500-600 on owcomputing - not sure where you're seeing cheaper ones. But yeah, $400 to go from 1TB to 2TB (and ram likewise) are overpriced for sure.

That's not a fair comparison. Any external SSD is going to be slow and cheap. You really should be comparing against true top-of-the-line SSDs that are equivalent to the performance of the MBP storage. If you check prices of m.2 nvme drives you'll find that Apple's pricing is quite reasonable.

For comparison a 1TB Samsing 970 Pro is $299 and they don't even make a 2TB size for their top tier. The slightly slower EVO Plus is $449 for a 2TB drive.

What Touch Bar? Is that that thing at the top I never use because I don’t look down on my keyboard when I’m typing?
You've either never used a MacBook Pro with a Touch Bar or a troll (or both). The Touch Bar isn't used for tying. It's used for increasing the volume, scrubbing through a video, increasing the screen brightness, etc.

This update addresses all my issues with my current MBP. Just ordered a replacement. Can’t wait to have a physical escape key again!

The Touch Bar was a solution to a problem no one had, or needed. I would love to see the actual numbers on people who actually consider it useful.

At first, I thought it was gimmicky. Then I forced myself to start using it, and now I like it quite a bit.

It is so contextual that it sometimes requires too much thought to find what you need as you switch between apps, but that is also its superpower -- commonly-used virtual keys, right where I need them, right when I need them. The TouchBar is not perfect, but I like it better than physical keys that only do one thing (don't get me started on mapping function keys).

Its stupid. Period. Every time i look at it what it does is something different, which in theory is nice and flexible. But the result is I never know what is able to do unless I go out of my way to notice it.

He is completely 100% wrong about Chromebooks in the classroom. He said the iPad works better. OK, just try and write an essay on an iPad. The glass keyboard is not that good. Maybe for very young kids who don't do much reading and writing. You need a real keyboard for real work

Have you ever tried to read a PDF version of a textbook on an iPad? You have to do a LOT of horizontal and vertical scrolling. On the 15" Chromebook the PDF formatted page works well enough.

Chromebooks run real web browsers too.

Finally, my experience is with high school students but if you ask students to do something on a Chromebook they can gt the right to work. But they are not nearly as productive on iPads

The Chromebook is very much like a Mac actually. I prefer them to any Windows 10 PC.

I‘m writing a novel. Mostly on the go, mostly on the iPad. The virtual keyboard leaves me a neat letterbox area of the iPad screen. It’s great for focussing. 150,000 words and counting...

Phil Schiller pathetic as always, trying to dismiss and minimize the huge 3-year failure with the old keyboard. Rather than complain about Chromebooks, look at your own line of MacBooks that are the joke of the industry.

In the good news,
Better base models specs (16gb-512ssd). I guess they realized we are in 2019.
New magic keyboard, still to be tested.
Better battery
Better monitor resolution.

In the bad
Still the same useless touchbar.
No MAG-SAFE
Is it still the case that RAM and SSD are not user upgradable?
Still soldered components that makes it a disposable appliance?
Still limited to 4 ports. Actually 3 if you use one to plug power.

As much as I need to update, I will pass since bad outweigh the goods and due to the simple issue that RAM and SSD are not user upgradable.
It is quite ridiculous that RAM and SSD cannot be upgraded in a 3 to 5k computer.
Totally agree, except one minor point - "Better base models specs (16gb-512ssd)." - the 16gb-512ssd model on the 16" is the same price as what that option was on the 15", all they've done is remove the cheaper 16gb-256ssd option. If they'd made 16gb-512ssd on the 16" the same price as the 16gb-256ssd on the 15" then yep. But no.

They did exactly that.

The 15” 16/512 was $2,599. The 16” 16/512 is $2,399, same price as the 15” 16/256.

He should walk into any K-2 classroom and watch the kids try and use an Apple laptop. They all touch the screens. It's really becoming an issue for Apple technology schools - many young kids no longer have any idea how to use a trackpad or even a mouse, and iPads often won't work for certain types of required state/district/other testing. All these kids have used are touch-screens. Apple is just being stubborn and dragging their feet about a feature that many people would use.

You're also paying RETAIL pricing, and don't have hundreds of billions of dollars worth of persuasion behind you.

Yes, Apple's RAM and SSD (and GPU upgrade) pricing is a complete joke.

It’s not a fair comparison at all! But most people wouldn’t mind slower SSDs as long as they’re bigger. Faster drives only make a difference for large files and demanding work.

There is fast external storage out there but it costs a lot so Apple’s prices after the refresh are fair. They were overpriced before the 16” launched though. The Samsung X5 is really fast. Samsung claims 2.8 read/2.3 write for 1 TB. Keep in mind the Thunderbolt 3 has 40 Gbps bandwidth. That’s up to 5 GB/s which is nearly 60% more bandwidth than the read speeds of the largest internal NVMes Apple uses.

The 13” comes with the same butterfly keyboard that it did two days ago. Apple wants those who want the new keyboard to pay for the 16” until the inevitably refresh the 13” with the new scissor keyboard sometime next year.

Believe me they will do A LOT of sales...
Anything that Apple sells will do that. And believe me when I say that a lot of people will complain about this next year. No WiFi6 is a real bummer for such an expensive notebook.

Whilst comparing to an external drive wasn't a good example, the point is the same anyway. Apple's pricing is a joke.

A 1TB Samsung 970 Evo m.2 NVME drive that is comparable speed to what you find in a macbook is about $325. AUSTRALIAN.

2TB Seagate Firecuda (again, M.2 NVME - a properly fast internal drive) - $680 Australian.

Yes. Apple use fast drives. But the days of Apple having a proprietary PCIe SSD interface and PCs being stuck with SATA are no more. PCs now have m.2 slots and NVME drives that are just as fast. If not faster. And upgradeable.

Not having a touch bar myself, I'm just curious, how does a touch bar help with filling forms/text boxes???
The Touch Bar shows the text that you can fill up (for example, name, address etc Or even whether usernames against passwords are stored in your system). It’s much more convenient and intuitive than the onscreen auto text options.
This is the only instance I use the touchbar and I would gladly pay again for this.
