Macrumors Headline: "Phil Schiller Goes on Offensive Against Android and Samsung"

Yep all journalists put their own spin on the facts.

Very tough if it's not your computer.

Even if it is, I've wasted so much time downloading every single Windows program on the Internet to make my Windows partition functional, and a lot of those apps are junk and barely do the job.

Sorry, I don't buy it.

Oh here we go with the unproven, stereotype of "Android users are cheaper then Iphone users."

I go to mobile app developer conferences, and have talked to several developers with apps on both platforms. Only one said he made more on Android, but over a dozen said they make significantly (3X to 10x) more revenue from iOS. That's proof enough for me. Where's your proof?

Sounds like Apple's salty towards Android since their sales have slumped.

I think you mean their stock price has slumped because their sales have grown over 25% last quarter, YoY.

But here's the thing: Since Android (and Samsung) are on almost twice as many carriers, Apple will continue to grow sales simply by adding more carriers, and chip away at Android's marketshare in the process.

Apple's approach is very methodical and they're patient; even if MacRumors readers are not.

Why would an Android user join this forum if they had no Apple products?

I've had a string of Macs, and have a few iOS devices. I now use an Android phone by preference, because it's better.

Maybe the increasing number of Android users here is just an indication that Apple need to wake up and compete better in the phone/iOS space?

Seriously. I've been using apple products for over 13 years, ya ya I know a lot of you have been using them longer its not a competition. I'm a fanboy of good quality products that are innovative not any particular brand. There is no doubt that every iphone in my opinion has been outstanding quality wise at the time of its release, yes antenna was overblown.

But it's really slowed down innovation wise. Other then the iphone 5 being a little longer there hasn't been an iphone or ios feature that has given me the urge to upgrade to a new iPhone since the iphone 4. Neither will an iphone 5S a slightly faster iphone 5 with a camera improvements lol.

Lets not forget Steve Wozniak, co founder of the company and tech expert, uses and enjoys both Apple and Android devices says the iPhone is now lagging behind Android in innovation.

Anyone who can't see that is delusional and close minded.

reasons why windows is behind:
1) supporting legacy way too far back is holding them back
2) poor CLI, scripting support, and open source support
3) developers pay for visual studio...xcode is free
4) have you seen regedit?
5) recover partition and modern boot loader (not sure if win8 has this or what)
6) not obj oriented but i guess .net is headed that way? (maybe someone more knowledgable would care to comment?)
7) still on NTFS ie outdated file system (aren't unix permissions kinda the standard now? where is journaling support?)
8) ssh (maybe thats unix)
9) native x11 (a bit more than just unix)
10) built in sharing: apache server, php, rsync,
11) mission control/expose OP
12) parental controls
13) encrypts your whole drive (not sure if windows does that now)
14) language selection and dynamic keyboard support is better
15) control over applications and their access is better
16) time machine is pretty sick
17) fusion drive thingie
18) better accessibility controls (siri like speech recog has been around for a while, ctrl-cmnd-alt-8 inverts screen colors for better nighttime/contrast, there are other features windows can't do that have been around since OS X public beta )
19) migration assistant is a beast
20) netboot, though you might complain, is actually a beast
21) recently airdrop has proven invaluable

ok i could keep going, and i'm sure some of these you could address with additional software, but i have all this **** out of the box. mom does too, and that matters cuz i dont wanna have to fix her **** up just to get her up to par. windows and android both need a restart from scratch. nextstep revolutionized SDK and vertical integration of an OS ( at the very least).

these things really do matter, and not because i fix my moms computers. i'm a med student and a published researcher. the fact that i can X11 or tunnel easily to HPC linux boxes and integrate with ease from any mac makes it a more modern and powerful tool. I don't have to futz with putty or cygwin, i don't have to setup RSH to get clustering software to use my cores. I really could keep going, but a lot of the time windows users are set in their ways. if you think windows/android is for tech-savvy, then you are just not tech savvy enough to realize why we are not :)
i really odn't give a **** what fone you use btw, just don't come on my forum website to tell me you know better
ps. google software is not the best. i think google earth has been neglected although chrome is quite good. android is a bad platform and we will see more NDI SDK development and better integration from android, if not a whole rebuild of the OS.

anyway, if you have anything to add, please do

1. Agreed
2. True, but you can get around this using third party software such as Activestate Perl/Python, etc.
3. Developers always have costs somewhere. You pay to play.
4. The windows registry has grown cumbersome, and I doubt that will change.
5. Currently in Windows 8 and 7, even if people aren't fond of them.
6. The APIs are object oriented...
7. An updated cow filesystem is in the works, but testing is still ongoing...
8. Download Putty
9. X11 is a protocol. Windows has it's alternatives.
10. ?
11. In windows blue I'm guessing
12. Already there
13. Already there
14. Always ongoing
15. This has been implemented for the "Metro" apps
16. Their backup software is fairly good, but also be made to run hourly.
17. They leave that to the OEMs, who know their hardware better than microsoft.
18. These improve in Windows 8, even if they are scattered a bit.
19-21. Windows 8 makes improvements/alternatives.

Windows 8 has its problems, but most of the above are not it. The legacy support and registry are big ones. The rest are simply solutions that will find their way in soon if they aren't already provided. What you basically asked for is that Windows adopt Unix/Linux standards. Windows is Windows, and they have greater need of making their operating system faster, more stable, and a better developer environment with improved APIs, etc. If Microsoft tries to make Windows just a different/improved form of UNIX/Linux, then they've already lost.

EDIT: For the record, I understand your point; I use my macs for the exact same reason you do.

Damn I love watching nerds fight, right up there with a good old fashioned cat fight!

Phil sounds scared.

Apple sounds scared.

I would be too right now. Android is so much better than iOS right now that they have some serious catching up to do with the OS.

He's scared of Android otherwise he wouldn't be talking about trivial things like people with older Android phones.

The new crop of Android phones like the HTC One are spectacular.

Just my 2 cents

reasons why windows is behind:
1) supporting legacy way too far back is holding them back

It also is holding their users in place. Not a single serious business will ever consider using OS/X with Apple redesigning everything every couple of years and dropping backward compatibility.

2) poor CLI, scripting support, and open source support

There are probably more open source products that work on Windows than the ones that work on OS/X. PowerShell is probably the most powerful CLI/scripting language there is. Besides all regular scripting favorites (Perl, Tcl, Ruby eyc.) work on Wndows just fine.

3) developers pay for visual studio...xcode is free

There is a reason why xcode is free :D It's less powerful than Visual Studio Express (which is free).

4) have you seen regedit?

I have. I am still waiting for Apple to come up with something. Remember that use of registry is optional on Windows. Nobody forces developers to use it for their software yet most of them prefer to do it anyways.

5) recover partition and modern boot loader (not sure if win8 has this or what)

What does recover partition has to do with OS? Windows machines from HP and Dell have had recover partition forever. It's probably needed for OS/X because it's file system is not as fail proof as NTFS.

6) not obj oriented but i guess .net is headed that way? (maybe someone more knowledgable would care to comment?)

Is OS/X object oriented or something?

7) still on NTFS ie outdated file system (aren't unix permissions kinda the standard now? where is journaling support?)

Classic UNIX permissions are way older than NTFS. Educate yourself on modern file permissions features (like ACLs). Wikipedia.

8) ssh (maybe thats unix)

Plenty of options to do SSH on Windows.

9) native x11 (a bit more than just unix)

Funny. X11 is one of the weakest links in UNIX. Just read recent news about how Linux community is struggling to replace X11 with something else.

And on and on. You just need to learn a little more about computing. In general, there is a lot more software for Windows than there is for OS/X.

How is Apple up if Android leads in smartphone marketshare worldwide?

Agree iPhone is still better, which is why I compared them to a #1 ranked phone. But Android is more popular right now head to head. Apple needs to start playing leader again, and not just noting past achievements.

you answered it yourself i agree the iphone is better.

we just have different definitions in our football analogy

to me the 'game' is the product
to you the 'game' is marketshare

can go either way

Who makes more money? Google or Apple? Who's getting who's ass kicked?

Google makes $0 from Android. They are actually helping foreign companies and hurting American companies in the process.

This is why I can't stand Google android sheep.

Please. Apple supports things made in china where there are little to no human rights, poor working conditions and people jumping off of buildings. They say "designed in California" and Child labor performed in china.

I am so sick of these arguments, they are weak. I suggest you look at the big picture. People used to FOLLOW APPLE. Now apple is FOLLOWING the people. Apple made 1 phone per year, people wait patiently and were so obsessed that nothing could compete, technically or financially or popularity wise. Now look at apple. Making 2 phones per year? Soon to be a "poor" mans version made of plastic? Soon to be a bigger screen because its what people truly want? Multiple colors (because black and white is boring?)

And the whole offensive/defensive comments as well, apple NEVER speaks up, they let their products and sales do the talking. Now they have to "explain" themselves. its all adding up to one thing. Fear. Apple is on the ropes, they are no longer the innovators that they used to be and the consumers are recognizing it. My iphone I used in 2007 looked the same as the one I sold in 2012 for my note 2. And tomorrow when the S4 is announced, I will be selling my note 2 in order to get it.

Yes and thats why your getting your ass kicked by Android.

I have owned the S3, Nexus 4 and the Note 2 and i can tell you fragmentation hasnt hurt my experience one bit.

PC's are fragmented to hell and they dont suffer. In fact OSX cant perform a single benchmark better than PC in any games.

Dont tell consumers its for their benefit you make the hardware and software. Its for your profit only

Now there's some truth

You really wish the Galaxy ran iOS? For most people iOS itself is the problem; we don't feel it's moving in the right direction or fast enough in any direction.

iOS 6 wasn't anything to write home about, but look at it this way... the biggest feature of Android last year was a clone of Apple's 3 year old AirPlay, and Samsung recently ripped off Passbook, an iOS 6 feature, down to the way the icon looks.

So while you may not be a fan of iOS and where it's headed, it looks like Google and Samsung are.

As for "most people", judging by every major user satisfaction survey, they're happiest with iOS so I think you speak for a very small minority, not "most people."

Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller went on the offensive against Android in a unusually forthright interview with The Wall Street Journal.
In addition to the above comments, Schiller said that Android devices and the operating system "don't work seamlessly together" because they come from different vendors, unlike Apple which makes both the software and hardware in its devices.

Samsung is expected to announce an update to its flagship Galaxy S smartphone line tomorrow.

Of course the guy from Apple would tell those colorful lies!

The user experience on a high end android is better than on iOS, no question about it. I've used both, I swore the iphone was the best phone ever until I got a galaxy s III.

On a low end underpowered device, then yes, he's got a point.

Thats a lot of phones for the small time Android has been readily available on the market not to mention those phone models themselves are not very old. Why do you change so much? Not happy with your experience I would imagine or you just love cycling through junk phones.

Android is only a year younger than iOS right?

It's interesting that the choice was to have Phil do the talking. I wonder how he was chosen, or if he just went out on his own with this strategic move. The timing's rather obvious with tomorrow being Samsungs big S4 day.

With Apples all in one advantage (hardware & software) I would have expected them to be prepared to counter with their own announcement. Apple have proven over the years that they have stellar intelligence monitoring the competition.

Perhaps this is nothing more than a new way for Apple to operate via a combo of lawsuits & new products introduced whenever Apple decides to. Either way it's history in the making in this high stakes game.

AAC, AIF, any disk image, any image fullscreen, ZIPs (since they don't even unzip when you open them), archives that aren't ZIP, MP4 video, text files without Notepad screwing up the formatting, and Office documents ironically.

Notice how you can open the majority of those by just pressing spacebar in Mac OS X. QuickLook is extremely useful.

That isn't true at all. There are a lot of obscure file formats and zipped with whatever random program where you can run into trouble opening a file on OSX. If you're dealing with common formats, it's a non-issue on either platform.

4) have you seen regedit?

Assuming you do spend some time with Windows machines, when was the last time you really had to touch regedit?

7) still on NTFS ie outdated file system (aren't unix permissions kinda the standard now? where is journaling support?)

HFS+ has a lot of stability issues of its own. I'm not sure that point is really in favor of OSX.

PC's are fragmented to hell and they dont suffer. In fact OSX cant perform a single benchmark better than PC in any games.

Your analogy is flawed, plus you draw a wrong conclusion.

OS X vs Windows gaming performance has nothing to do with OS fragmentation, and everything to do with graphics API.

It's essentially a matter of Direct3D vs OpenGL. Proprietary vs open.

DirectX is much better supported than OpenGL. Microsoft has the money to support it, make it easy for developers to use and they provide excellent backward compatibility to target a wide range of machines running any version of Windows with a single closed-source installer.

If anything, OpenGL is the fragmented API.

Direct3D works because it's not fragmented.

If Apple provided their own API/tools for game development instead of using OpenGL, and that's what you compared to Direct3D, your comparison would make more sense. As it is it's illogical for a couple different reasons.

It's true there's no way around it.
The second problem that android has is piracy, I only know 1 person that doesn't pirate android apps all the other users that I know either use only free stuff or pirate away.

I had way more pirated iOS software than I will ever have on my android phone.

----------

How do you backup and restore your note 2? You rebought all of your apps for android? What are you using instead of Photostream, iWork, iCloud, Garageband, iPhoto, Find my phone, Find my Friends, etc. etc.

Sorry, but you're not fooling anyone.

I never used any of the services when I had my iPhone. All my stuff backs up to google and my PC.

Who makes more money? Google or Apple? Who's getting who's ass kicked?

Google makes $0 from Android. They are actually helping foreign companies and hurting American companies in the process.

This is why I can't stand Google android sheep.

Other than a stockholder, why would a consumer care who makes how much money? Did you know that about $94 billion of Apple's cash reserves are held outside of the US?
