I agree with most of your post. The comment I clipped though is a little hyperbole. The "better" OS is the one you prefer. Whoever you are and whatever the OS is. It's subjective. Both OSes are great. Both have shortcomings and advantages. "Better" only comes into play for an individual use case.

Yes, but that was my point...only ardent, blinder wearing loyalists are screaming "better" when it comes to their respective OS preference. Bottomline though, to the avg. consumer they are fairly equal, both with their own advantages and disadvantages not unlike, say BMW vs Audi or Lexus vs. MB.

Yes and thats why your getting your ass kicked by Android.

I have owned the S3, Nexus 4 and the Note 2 and i can tell you fragmentation hasnt hurt my experience one bit.

PC's are fragmented to hell and they dont suffer. In fact OSX cant perform a single benchmark better than PC in any games.

Dont tell consumers its for their benefit you make the hardware and software. Its for your profit only

Since 'when' was a Mac built for gaming!? If you want to take a CPU battle, a Mac Pro trounces any consumer based PC - custom built or not, the Extreme line of Intel chips just cannot compete against Dual Hex-Core Westmere Xeon's in the current Mac Pro - & that is dated! Graphically, the Mac line has always lacked - do you EXPECT a GTX Titan in one? Judging by your consumer-based reply, yes.

Different market aims - try cutting & editing on a PC, YUCK.

Android is a mess, end of.

To use a car analogy, Apple doesn't want to be a Ferrari, but they are fine with being a BMW or Mercedes rather than a VW or GM (which is what Samsung is more comparable to). BMW and Mercedes are volume producers, but they don't make econoboxes or pickup trucks, even in Europe.

Mercedes and BMW don't make affordable cars? What to you think the SmartCar, C series, Mini, and 1 series are? They are deliberate attempts at catching the downmarket business they formerly did not cater to. All of these cars start in the $20-30K price range which is avg in today's market, not lux at all. Also, I'm not sure if you have priced pickup trucks lately, but they can cost same as MB C series or BMW 1 series depending on options and cab size.

Different strokes for different folks. I have around 80/90 GB of music and not all of it is by labels or offered in marketplaces. Plus a bunch is iTunes purchased, so Google Play won't upload those. Haven't tried Doubletwist. Does it manage iTunes purchased music well? I don't like the managing as a hard disk and making folders for playlists and stuff....my winamp days are far behind.

I use my phone and tablet similarly...just depends on where I am and if I need larger views.

If the iTunes purchased song don´t have DRM they are uploaded to Google Music

Its simple really. Android gets a bad rap and a lot of it comes from people that have never touched an Android device. They make false claims on what it can and cant do without really knowing. So someone will just correct them. I dont see why its so hard to understand. If someone here was saying how the iphone cant do this or that but it could..would you let them know?

I switched to Android and I can do so much more than I could ever do with my iPhone. To use Schiller's words - my user experience improved exponentially. And I'm integrated across several devices, including my Mac Book Air and tablet.

Two iPhones users, who actually spent some time with my phone, have dumped their iPhones and now have Androids.

The iPhone was a great phone when it came out six years ago as it perfected what Windows had been trying to do with Mobile. But its OS is outdated and long in the tooth and they desperately need to do some catching up. They can only feed the fanboys so much crack before they eventually open their eyes up and discover the emperor has no clothes.

Seamless experience!?

Ummm, let's see what happens when I log into ANY android phone or laptop in the world with my Google ID:

Start up brand new phone. It asks me do I have a Gmail account which I do. Ok, I sign in.

I am asked if I want to keep my account backed up and location services on. Yes I do.

WOW! What's happening now?

Oh, all my settings from my previous phone are being set up (wifi password connections, wallpaper previous installed from my other phone, screen timeout ect. ect.) Cool!

Now all of my 159 apps are downloading or being updated automatically.

What's this? All my contacts with folders (Google Contacts), email with all settings (Gmail), payment info with NFC's (Google Wallet), predefined relevant information to me (Google Now), pictures (Google+), music (Play Music), movies/TV shows (Play Movie's & TV), map info that I stared (Google Maps), bookmark folders (Chrome), documents in every format (Google Drive), calendar, books (Google Books), magazines (Google Magazine), voice mail (Google Voice), text messages (Google Voice), instant messaging (Google Talk), news reader (Google Currents), YouTube subscriptions and folders (YouTube), shopping deals (Google Shopper), and everything I've searched for on all my other devices.

That seams pretty seamless to me. One log in ID with password and POOF! It's all there.

Yeah, I can live with that.

My observations:

The majority of the reason the average consumer buys a phone with Android, is because it is cheaper than an iPhone. Its their first entry to smartphone too. Period.

Most people here that whine about having a new Apple iOS, is about cosmetics: wanting the home screen to give more freedom on how to arrange icons and such. So silly. Just use the phone...

From my own observations on the 'ground level', I see more and more friends dropping their android based phones for iPhones...due to frustrations with battery life, crashes and freezes, and bad or missing apps.

The hidden secret of using Android...this is what Phil is trying to highlight...

And what's wrong with buying a phone because it is cheaper? I hear isheep constantly say this and I don't see the problem. Not everywhere want to spend $200 on a phone. And some people just can't afford it. So if there are low cost android phones then so be it.

Are smartphones supposed to reserved for the elite only?

And im worry I think it is ridiculous that I have to jailbreak an ios device just so I can make my own theme. It is something small but I should be able to do it since it is a premium price.

Exactly! Half of the people in this thread have never touch an android device. Or they haven't touched an android device since 2010. And the rest will hate on android no matter what.

I love when people like the one you're responding to a) thinks their opinion is a fact. b) thinks that their use case/observation is the only one. Especially by using the word "period" at the end as if that's the end of the discussion.

There is no way to quantify was "the majority of the reason the average consumer" does anything. Good luck trying to prove that.

I could care less about icons and themes. Like I said in an earlier post - just having the ability to choose a default application that I want has "justified" my switching to Android.

I agree. I've used both iPhone and Android. I had the nexus, note, gs3, gs2, etc... I always had to root and put a new rom to get the latest OS. With my iPhones I never had to worry. I'll take my jailbroken iPhone 5 over and android phone, with that said I do like Android

I really can't see what features a Android phone has that really make me think "Gee, I really wish I had an android phone."

but there are plenty of things that make me think

"Gee, I really am glad I don't have an android phone."

but that's just me :p
You've obviously never used one...

Sorry, but what you call integration actually is incarceration. You get locked in a clever digital prison, that's all that Apple's "seamless integration" is.

Maybe it's a "prison" to you, but there's nothing Android does that I'd want/need my iPhone to do.

Matt - I asked you earlier what you meant by your comment that there are so many things the iPhone can do that Android can't. Can you list a few. I know you don't really mean 750,000 or whatever # you used. Clearly hyperbole. But I'm curious what important features of iOS/iPhone has that Android doesn't for your use case.

No. See my signature then click the link to read McCracken's article. A prison is where you are trapped and have zero choices. But even iOS users have choices. There are multiple streaming apps; photo sharing apps; emails apps; cloud drive apps. You can import your own movies and songs. If that is any kind of prison, it's Club Fed at worst.

Well, he's not wrong.

My iPad 2 went to iOS6 the day it came out. My GS3 has never been on the latest OS.
What about updates to the the 1st generation iPad?
I guess Apple wants those people to upgrade since it's no longer supported.

Not saying your right or wrong. But thats one of the reasons I prefer Android. I like to flash different custom ROMs and try them out. Plus the fact that I can make a backup of the entire phone (rooted of course) and flash it back when ever I want is a HUGE plus..for me anyways. No more messing with Itunes..restores..
Straight out of the box if you want to try a different keyboard..no problem go ahead. Want to try a different launcher..no problem. I dont like to be locked down. Granted there are things you need root for but not all.
Got tired of playing the jailbreak game. Tired of the same tweaks. How many tweaks do I need to change the color of my clock...How many tweaks to change the text on my slide to unlock

If the iTunes purchased song don´t have DRM they are uploaded to Google Music

I've been buying from itunes since I got my first iPod in 2004. While I only use itunes for some music purchases, I have quite a bit that would not upload. So it doesn't work for me.

sadly time has come to move on from apple

I'm a graphic designer and I've been an apple user for over 15 years - I have owned mac towers, various imacs, mac mini and we have 4 iphones in the house but as I'm getting ready to upgrade my iphone I am getting to the point where I feel its time to break away - sadly so though as I do like a lot of what Apple still has to offer but their products are not enough to keep me in the room anymore - and the arrogance of the Apple Attitude really gets to me ...really Tim Cook telling us the iphone 5 is the "right" size the "perfect" size and that's it end of story .......who is he telling us whats the right size - and this obsession to be the "thinnest" - who on earth cares if its a few mm thinner - rather make it the same width with space for a memory card or a zoom lens ... the iphone wasn't exactly a brick to start off with ... and then Apple trying to force their pathetic apple maps on us ...hmmmm suddenly its all quiet on that front ...and yes people do like and use google street view too - so if and when they do release their map fix - if it doesnt have that I'll stick to google thank you ... never mind also "Siri" who is suddenly very quiet - who on earth uses Siri anyway - my 12 year old used it a few times for jokes and then ditched it - its bad ... in a nutshell there is no choice - the Apple environment has become a total white and sterile clone environment ...this is what you will do and how you will do it attitude ...remember the fun days when you could even change something as silly as your trash icon into something else via skinz - and lets not forget that famous Apple ad of the athlete running into a theater and smashing the screen of the grey boring windows environment and the old guy talking windows ....right now the sterile white clone apple store and apple environment with the old man in front on the screen trying so desperately to walk and talk like Steve Jobs is just a new world update of what windows was depicted as in that commercial.... despite their flaws ...Samsung / Android are offering options ...why cant there be a few apple phones - give us choices one with a "decent" larger screen -...really the 5 does nothing ...the phone should have been 1 icon wider as well - there should be a memory card slot - dedicated to photos and videos - let us choose the storage - try streaming that all to icloud when traveling abroad where wifi is not always available, NFC ...and my list goes on - so yes I'm starting to think of moving to a different phone for starters and will be watching the release of the new Galaxy tonight ...I'm starting to think there is a whole new colorful world out there and guess what Apple I'm not the only one

Re: OS updates.

I think some people don't realize that while it may be true that the majority of devices aren't on the latest Android OS - updates are done a little differently.

Yes - there are FULL OS updates. But several times throughout the year, on my Android phone - the native apps get updated. Much more frequently that Apple's periodic .x release.

That being said - what version OS only matters if there are features that make it or break it. My device runs ICS right now and it's stable, smooth and perhaps I don't know what I'm missing by not having JB - but whatever it is - I don't "need" it because the phone works and does everything I actually NEED it to do.

I am not saying my iPhone doesn't. I am saying that while the update argument is somewhat valid - it doesn't relay the full picture.

well said! exactly my thoughts.....iphone4-->iphone5 was the worst upgrade of any electronic device for me.....i hardly see any difference! I am waiting for tonights S4 announcement, time to say adios to this rotten apple.....there was a time when apple used to be the "cool" product, everyone at work, friends circle....everyone feels iphones are no longer cool, and galaxy series in the new cool dude in the block :D

Seeing Apple trying to badmouth Samsung/Android just makes me appreciate my Note 2 even more. iPhone free since 2008 :)

When did I say my statement was a fact? I was stating my opinion.

Icons isn't important to you. But to some people it does matter. My observation is an observation not a fact.

And please point out where I said period in the post you quoted?

I was agreeing with your post. Read my first sentence again.
