I already had this argument on TechCrunch today, but I will say again that a lot of these malware issues are to do with Google itself, and how they don't want to take more control of their Play Store. There are lots and lots of spammy apps between the really good ones, and it's really hard to browse through the store because of that.

AVG Antivirus has been installed 50 to 100 million times on Google Play..
Avast 10 to 50 million, Norton Antivirus 5 to 10 million times , Kaspersky 1 to 5 million and McAfee 1 to 5 million. Not surprising, most Android owners I know have antivirus installed on their phones.

Shoot. I never installed an anti-virus program on my Nexus 7. But I don't really do much on it except read Kindle, Reddit, and Twitter. Gmail is on it, but that is my junk account. So I don't care too much if that is hacked.

But should I get an virus protection program anyway?

Everyone should go get a TinFoil hat - Apple really has decided to do marketing for stupid people.

Don't have one installed on my Skyrocket. Never had a virus. Don't know anyone in my office or amongst my friends with Android who have. The only stories I've read about viruses have either been on here/forum users spreading their usual sillyness and/or in articles about chinese scam apps that are patterned to look like their real counterpart apps, but in fact are malware.

I'm amazed that I've managed to remain 100% free off that 79% of viruses since 2009 (then again, I ain't a pirating **** willing to save a few pennies or pounds to get the latest must-have app for free from some malware injecting scumbag).

Still, I'd better buys me some F-Secure Mobile Security™ for my Android devices.

I suggest everyone buy some F-Secure Mobile Security™ for their devices actually.

Did I mention they sell F-Secure Mobile Security™?

OFF-TOPIC Edit:

Is it just me or is that woman on the F-Secure Mobile Security™ site seriously using her phone wrong?

Looks like some sort of SonyEricsson phone.

sounds like an invitation to develop malware to attack iOS.

You can't use the "security through obscurity" argument here. The bad guys have much more financial incentive to attack iOS than Android and they've been at it constantly since iOS became the dominant player in mobile with the lion's share of web traffic, online purchases, and advertising revenue. The fact that they've failed miserably says something.

I still don't understand how they could make Android from Linux and mess it up so badly as far as security is concerned.

Linux is a very safe and very unsafe OS at the same time. In the hands of a skilled system administrator (or even just a skilled user), you can build a bunker. However if someone builds his own system and doesn't pay much attention to security, then it is an open door.

It is well known that Android suffers from some amount of fragmentation (not that much actually, since the majority of the user base is spread over just 3 versions). It gets worse when you take into account all the bloat ware put on the phones, since that puts the task of keeping things safe on the manufacturers.

So in the end, I'm not surprised. However it would be interesting to see some statistics for e.g. the Galaxy S3 separately, to find out whether an (almost) up to date Android phone from a flagship manufacturer is as vulnerable as a cheap outdated phone.

another out of many more distractions from mr.Schiller

iOS is lagging behind Android and this is all he came up with? Malware report? it'd be much better if he concentrated on more important things (iphone, iOS, other products) than slamming competition in such lame way.

It's a tweet. It doesn't take a lot of time.

Yep, I really do think Steve made all these people seem a lot more sophisticated and smart over what they really are.

As I have been saying all along Android blows iOS away
this is just another example. Look how much more malware you get
and its free. I just put my iPhone up for sale today. Good news since the resale value of the iPhone blows away Samsung phones I should be able to buy 3 or 4 with the money from my iPhone.
Also since the battery on the galaxy 3 last a good hour or two unless you shut off every feature of the phone. I can buy three of them that should last me a whole day

Just saying

Battery on the S3 lasts an hour or two? Dude, you have zero clue what you are talking about.

The battery in my S3 goes all day long, I use it constantly at work. Never hits the charger until I go to bed.

Stop spitting out nonsense.

They are scared...Samsung is coming big time. S3 dominates that joke that is the iPhone
