But the cool thing is even stupid users or users without common sense or novice users are still safer on iOS than on androids. That says something about it, isn't it?

Tell you what, you can keep your locked down phone with a lack of side loading and 3rd party stores. Ill enjoy them on my phone and be careful about what I install and not be an idiot.

I've been on this planet for 36 years, and have never been in a car accident. I guess I'm safe :)

Let's stick with that analogy for a sec

iOS: A train/subway. You'll get where you want, but you'll have a lot less control along the way.

Android: Either a train/subway like iOS, or if you want, you can drive a car which gives you complete control.

Now comes the shocking statistic! People who drive cars get in 3820340320% more car accidents!!! OMG!! Android must be completely unsafe right? But wait...you could either drive responsibly so you're much less likely to get into an accident...or...I dunno...take the train?

This report is comparing apples to oranges in a huge way. They are also including in the report a lot of stuff that shouldn't be there.

Lets see an app store comparison across the board, Amazon, Google Play, Apple AppStore. The best part for you guys is i'm sure, without a doubt, Apple will still win so you can feel good about it for whatever weird reason you do. Weird since you know, you don't gain anything from your device's competition being worse, on the contrary, you lose.

Its not stupid users though. I know people that arnt very tech friendly and they only download apps from the Google Play Store and also look at reviews before hand.

Because that's the default app store and the others aren't highly popularised. Reading reviews doesn't necessarily guarantee the software is clean though. If a developer is savvy enough to develop malicious software I'm sure they can submit some positive reviews under different names.

Its the people that want to rip off developers by downloading pirated apps which are getting infected, and to be honest I have no sympathy for them.

Good point, if it were true. A quick Google of 'Malware in Google Play store' brings up a number of very interesting results...

Interesting quote from Kaspersky in that second link too:
Pointing to a report by security vendor Kaspersky, Krebs said that almost all mobile malware targets Android devices and that in comparison, Apple's iTunes store does a "stupendous job of keeping out malicious apps."

With the onslaught of new devices from the competition coming out, he needs something to talk about. Anything.

Good job Phil!

This^

Huge portion of these incidents are stupid users. I've had Android phones for 4 years and have never had an issue. I'm careful what I install.

Apple needs some hacker/virus programmer to smack them around a little, knock some humility in to their smug heads.
Maybe you could explain how the "type" of user matters to a discussion about which platform has more malware problems?

People grasping really hard at something to try and justify their purchases.

I remember throughout the last couple of years when all of my non savvy friends and family bring me their clogged and infected Android phones wanting me to remove their malware. Oh wait no I don't... because that never happens.

Perhaps that's because most people who have malware don't even know it. Until their bank account is empty...

Just had a look at the first link and the first comment sums it up really.

When a memory cleaner application requests permission to send text messages and read the entire contents of your SD card, it should be pretty obvious that something's not right.

Which highlights a point I forgot to mention - Check Permissions! Many apps ive downloaded the developer has explained why each permission is required.

Surprise!
The more widespread OS has more malware.
Please think a little more next time. iOS doesn't mean just iPhones, it counts iPod Touches and iPads too. And with those devices into the equation, they are way more "widespread" than Android is.

Tell you what, you can keep your locked down phone with a lack of side loading and 3rd party stores. Ill enjoy them on my phone and be careful about what I install and not be an idiot.

But you probably represent less than 1% of the Android users. The vast majority of people buying Android and iOS phones are consumers now, not geeks like in the early days of smartphones. These people most definitely are not going to "be safe out there" and will be an "idiot". There are tons of cries about iOS being a closed system and restrictive, and the AppStore is a monopoly and all that crap... but you know what, It friggin works. And average consumers want their stuff to work... not blow up and have all their personal data stolen.

When I was in the AT&T store buying my kids iPhones last year, there were plenty of people around me buying various Android devices too... trust me, there wan't anyone in the bunch that remotely qualified as a geek and likely had no clue how to manage the risks of an open door platform. My favorite was an Asian young lady that was well under 5' tall and playing with her new Samsung Galaxy Note. If I didn't know better, I would have thought it was a sitcom or something because it was gigantic when held to her head. She didn't appear to be someone that was tech savy, but just wanted a big honkin phone.

It doesn't. And the original poster is right. Most (but not all) of the infections from malware are the result of people doing something stupid. But that doesn't mean that it's OK for the platform to be so susceptible to it.

"The seat belts in the car I'm selling break when you need them. But that's OK, because only idiots who run into things will be hurt by it."

I'm amazed that I've managed to remain 100% free off that 79% of viruses since 2009 (then again, I ain't a pirating **** willing to save a few pennies or pounds to get the latest must-have app for free from some malware injecting scumbag).

Still, I'd better buys me some F-Secure Mobile Security™ for my Android devices.

I suggest everyone buy some F-Secure Mobile Security™ for their devices actually.

Did I mention they sell F-Secure Mobile Security™?

OFF-TOPIC Edit:

Is it just me or is that woman on the F-Secure Mobile Security™ site seriously using her phone wrong?

I believe its the LG enV 3 actually. But what I find funny is that phone does not run any of the operating systems that this company "secures"

And for users who don't read permissions lists? Yeah, they should, but we all know that people don't, same with software license agreements when installing software on the Desktop.

Does this mean that it's their own fault? Surely this sort of thing wouldn't happen if the stores were policed and sideloading of malicious apps wasn't possible, such as with iOS?

Never understood that logic. Going by your example, Only geeks should have PC's because someone not tech savvy might download malware or a virus.

Personally, I dont care about other peoples usage. My family and I know how to download and use software on our PC's, Laptops and Android devices without getting malware and viruses. Not because were geeks, but because like a lot of people we use common sense!

Well if they dont want to have a look through a quick list explaining what the app can do, then thats there fault! A quick permission list and a long drawn out software agreement and two different things.

This. So happy I decided to make 2013 the year I decided to not buy an iPhone ever again and bought an Android.

Not worried about malware.

Battery on the S3 lasts an hour or two? Dude, you have zero clue what you are talking about.

The battery in my S3 goes all day long, I use it constantly at work. Never hits the charger until I go to bed.

Stop spitting out nonsense.

BS two of my residents have the galaxy 3 and they are constantly complaining about the battery life, telling me they have to turn off features in order for the phone to last all day!! I have the iPhone 5 and use it with all the feature constantly on and I can go two days of active use without a charge! In fact when I got my iPhone 5 one of my friends bought my iPhone4s for $200 to replace its his galaxy 3. Fact, he rather have last years iPhone rather than this years Samsung. If you go do a search check out the data for yourself
40% iPhone new users are people switching from Android. At first it seems like a dream you can get an iphone like device for 1/2 the price than they realize why. You get what you pay for as my friend said after he bought my iPhone 4s
"glad to get rid of that plastic junk"

It is pretty scary to know that someone could be stealing my Redbox promotional codes..

Oh man my data is SO unclassified...
