Continuing a running theme over the last couple of weeks, a photo emerged online late on Monday of an alleged leaked 3D sensing camera module destined for the upcoming "iPhone 8" (via Slashleaks). Apple is said to have radically revamped its front-facing camera for its OLED iPhone, adding 3D sensing capabilities for facial recognition.

Screen-Shot-5.jpg

Notable KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has called the camera "revolutionary" because it consists of three modules: a standard camera front-facing camera module, an infrared transmitting module, and an infrared receiving module, all of which will allow the iPhone 8 to perform 3D sensing and modeling functions.

It's also possible that the front-facing camera will support 4K video recording at 60 frames per second, based on code found in the HomePod firmware leak, although this feature could be limited to the rear camera.

As with previous alleged leaked parts - which have included an A11 processor, wireless charging pad components, and an OLED display assembly and flex power cables - it's difficult to gauge the authenticity of the photo. However, it's not unusual for them to crop up in the weeks leading up to an iPhone launch.

In a separate and more dubious alleged leak, a video clip emerged on Tuesday on Chinese microblogging site Weibo showing what appears to be an Apple-branded handset with a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor going through a quality control process.

Strong consensus has built in recent months around the idea that Apple is eliminating Touch ID fingerprint recognition entirely in favor of a new authentication system based on facial recognition - as per the 3D sensing camera module above.

The prediction has been made by the reliable Kuo and echoed by JP Morgan analysts as well as Bloomberg, while Apple itself has confirmed that a facial recognition system is in the works, reflected in multiple references found in the leaked HomePod firmware. Given the weight of evidence suggesting the end of Touch ID for future iPhones, it's very likely this video shows a quality control stage for a knock-off clone iPhone destined for the Chinese market.

Expected to launch in early September, the "iPhone 8" - which could take a different name - is thought to feature a glass body and edge-to-edge OLED display that does away with the Home button. The new OLED iPhone will likely be sold alongside upgraded (but standard) 4.7 and 5.5-inch iPhones with LCD screens.

Fake! iPhone knockoff, There is very less [NO] chance Apple will place touch id on the back.

Hahaha I just love all this - because we've all guessed and decided Apple is ditching Touch ID, with no actual proof from Apple themselves... we have marked this as a fake video, despite the fact it's an Apple branded phone and it's a proper manufacturing machine..

Our guesses hold more value then video evidence of the opposite....

Oh I do hope Apple puts Touch ID in, of which their has been NO proof it's being scrapped, because it will have trolled the snot out of all the rumour sites. And Apple stated it will control all the leaks...

When you have multiple sources who are known to be accurate from empirical evidence (past accuracy), you get a pretty high confidence level of what will be. Ming and Gurman said Touch ID is gone. It's likely gone. Enjoy

OT: Why does it says Black Mesa in that video?
Mesa is the name of the touch IC on the board that is responsible for touch ID (mesa boost IC to be exact). The Chinese characters underneath say "fingerprint" as well.

If they are taking it out where else do you plan on them putting it? I was thinking either in the side button which is pretty small of area or the back apple logo all along.
It only makes sense as most people will be mad if there is no touch Id at all.
Building it into the logo would make it the cleanest as possible instead of those mockups with a lower button under the apple logo.
ID be ok with having in the apple logo besides not having it at all. its a good spot for it till they get the under the glass touch figured out.
Only have facial recognition will be a deal killer for lots of people.

Yeah ... a terminal window that also includes a conveniently large, blinking green piece of text? That's not how terminals tend to work.

Wrong, all the sources have been changing their minds every week this year as to what it will have, so no I won't believe a thing till Apple announces it as fact, it's been obvious Apple have controlled the leaks very well this year.
It's like the Homepod firmware, that was a planned release to beta testers and people claim Apple leaked all that info by mistake.. yeah right!
And these sources have been wrong before too, they are not as accurate as is claimed...

I'm just wondering how the iPhone is connected to the testing unit when there appears to be no apparent connection between the iPhone and the testing unit. Seems like a fake to me unless anyone can point out the connection?

Touch ID on the back is still better than no Touch ID. I do not want my phone to unlock via facial recognition.

If it still has the camera bump I am not buying. Same form factor for 6 plus years is pathetic. No buy, if the headphone jack is still missing.

Good thing I use a case.

I'll switch to Android as soon as my lifetime unlimited contract is up.

....but, ordered my space gray 512GB at (put in your date) and my shipping info has not been updated yet. Tim Cook needs to step down. I thought he was a supply chain genius. Wish he concentrated on apple instead of human rights.

Typical Apple holding back shipments to increase demand.

Where is the innovation apple?

PS: What about the mini?

Hahah. Yeah you're probably right...it probably won't have an OLED display at 5.8", with a smaller 'main display area'. It probably won't have a cutout in the top of the display. It probably won't have 3D image sensors using infrared light. It probably won't have a vertical camera on the back due to internal design requirements. It probably won't have an L-shaped dual-cell battery. It probably won't have a multi-layer logic board. It probably won't have a higher resolution display, TrueTone or ProMotion. It probably won't lack a physical indentation for a Home Button.

Oh wait. It will.

Touch ID will never be on the back of an iPhone. Okay? It is embarrassingly terrible design that Apple would never consider for a fleeting second.

You will unlock your phone via facial recognition or you won't have the latest iPhone. It's really as simple as that.
