"Apple is like a ship with a hole in the bottom, leaking water, and Steve's job is get to the ship pointed in the right direction." - Steve quoted

No, Steve did not quote that. If you listened to the ATD conference discussion between Jobs and Gates recently, Steve Jobs said that Gil Amelio (former head of Apple during Jobs' absence) had said this, including that it was his (Amelio's) job to get the ship pointed in the right direction. Interestingly, later on in the same discussion, Jobs said something about "...a ship that leaks from the top...", which I took as a reference to the previous quote, meaning that he was taking a stab at Amelio for leaking information while at the helm. Anyone else take it the same way or am I looking for scraps of drama where there is none?

Ok, here we go. Which Cisco VPN system are we talking about? Seriously, do you want to get into this converstion? I do several VPN connections WITH Cisco every week. Just because certain Universities use a certain VPN client and software, doesn't mean ALL of Cisco's VPN software is the same. There are about 60 different ways to establish ONE type of VPN, let alone countless others. You're right. Cisco's VPN is Not built into OS X, but it has it AND it can work with many different types of Cisco's VPN architectures. Don't beleive me, check this out. It will give you a step-by-step process. Oh, and by the way, check out the part where it talks about Mac OS X (10.4):
"The Cisco VPN client supports Windows 2000, XP and Vista (x86/32-bit only); Linux (Intel); Mac OS X 10.4; and Solaris UltraSparc (32 and 64-bit). The Cisco VPN Client is compatible with the following Cisco products:

Cisco 6500 / 7600 IPSec VPNSM and VPN SPA IOS Software Release 12.2SX and later
Cisco VPN 3000 Series Concentrator Software Version 3.0 and later
Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(8)T and later
Cisco PIX Security Appliance Software Version 6.0 and later
Cisco ASA 5500 Series Software Version 7.0 and higher
"

Do you want other examples?

My main point is that many Universities use VPN, most of them compatible and this is good for the iPhone. That's it.

I never said that Cisco VPN is not compatible with OS X *at all*. *You* said that generally universities will be iPhone compatible. My point was that there are probably more universities than you think that require download of some sort of proprietary Cisco VPN client and are thus iPhone *incompatible*. My original question asked this very question: how many (what percentage) of universities require use of the proprietary version of the Cisco VPN client and are thus iPhone incompatible. You say you deall with compatible universities all the time, while I offered two very large and prominent examples of *incompatible* universities.

My main point is that there are an appreciable amount of universities using one of Cisco's *incompatible* implementations and this is bad for the iPhone. The two schools I list alone mean that 70,000 southern california students will NOT be able to use their iPhone with Wi-fi on campus due to the Cisco VPN requirement. I'm assuming there are more schools like this: the numbers start to add up.

Since you are the expert, why the hell are these schools using an OS X incompatible implementation of the Cisco VPN client? From what I can tell "The current VPN server is the Cisco 3030 VPN concentrator". I have no clue why this means you can't use the OS X VPN client and have to download the Cisco software but it sounds like you will.

Real or not, this is probably the best image of the iPhone I have seen. It looks beautiful.

My uni apparently uses the cisco 3000 concentrator and AFAIK isnt compatiable with the built in OSX client. Any information on why or how to remedy the situation (aside from using the crappy cisco client) would be great if anyone knows!

speaking of cisco stuff - the cisco ASA has long replaced the Concentrator - thing to note is that the latest ASA code (Vers. 8) has the AnyConnect SSL VPN (packages for XP, Vista, OSX, Linux) and the much improved clientless WebVPN. Been using both on 10.4.9/10 and so far its been great - question Im wondering though, is will the Iphone be able to do the WebVPN at least.

Speculate the speculation

So about the possible inclusion of VPN on the iPhone. Would the main purpose be to, as many are discussing, offer Wi-Fi capability in areas where VPN connection is necessary? What are the other possibilities offered by inclusion of VPN on iPhone? For instance, I connect to a VPN for work and access a remote desktop over a Windows server - would this theoretically be possible on iPhone? Or am I overshooting here?

correct and I've seen it, more importantly where I got it from. Also if you read what I said "Steve quoted" which was meant to bed as "Steve.................quoted" not that he said it. (that would be kinda umm idiotic to quote yourself?). also more importantly when listening to the conference I couldn't make out who he said "said" that. with that said, thanks for the update.

I'd say Apple had a significant problem with leakage from the top under Sculley, Spindler, and Amelio, along with the other executive and board members of the time.

Sorry to keep this little OT sub-thread going.

I just re-read the account of Jobs' meeting with Dean Kamen, Jeff Bezos, John Doerr, et al. about the Segue where he lambastes the product design and their ideas for testing/rolling out (ha ha) the product, and offers up his own ideas on how to approach it. A fascinating look into Jobs' marketing approach and his ability to commandeer a room filled with high tech heavyweights:
