I have a hunch that there will only be one line of a next generation iPad (with perhaps the iPad 2 at 349-399 or so), that it will have a dual core ARM A15 on the Samsung 45 or 32nm process, probably close to the best PowerVR series 6 GPU, LTE, and a pixel quadrupled display.

Agreed, especially since this approached worked so well on the iPhone. To get an Apple tablet into everyone's hands no matter the price can only help Apple.

It's either going to take a beefy GPU or some intense optimization if we want games to run at the the iPad 3's rumored native resolution

He tweeted it. I think he's going to write a prediction article too.

Alright, thanks! Should probably follow him on Twitter. I have a suspicion it's a higher clocked Cortex A9. As long as it does what it's supposed to do and maybe they kick in a quad core GPU that'll be fine with me. Maybe that's the best Apple could do without just killing the battery.

Apple's making about $240 on the $499 iPad, and that's just the hardware the cost of the hardware. It's going to cost money to produce a retina display, and it's not like Apple to absorb it. Unlike with the iPhone 4, the cost for the retina display wasn't that great.

But, from the rumors, the retina display in the iPad 3 is not a s-ips and would be less costly to manufacturer.

This is starting to remind me of the old days here at MacRumors, where we actually used to get substantial rumors about Apple stuff *BEFORE* it came out. Keep it up Arn!

Hopefully WillBe getting this iPad

As do not currently have any iPad, this next version is the one I am holding out for. What ever it is it will be better then I have now. I am more concerned about the price (and possibly availability) of the iPad for my mother. She is holding onto some money to purchase the iPad as her first "computer" that is all hers. Mostly want her to get it because i am sure that if/when I get one and if she doesn't, I know mine will be with her 95% of the time.

My guess...

iPad3:
Retina, 32GB, Quad Core A6, Siri, white or black; 499, w/LTE 629
Retina, 64GB, Quad Core A6, Siri, white or black; 599, w/LTE 729

iPad2S:
No-Retina, 8GB, Dual Core (A5X), Siri, black; 349, with universal 3G 449

You should not be allowed on the internet.

Knowing Apple, prices points will stay the same.

Just a coincidence that the iPad processor adds an X at the same time OSX drops it's "Mac"? This's going to be HUGE.

Apple did say that they set the $499 price point with the original iPad so it could give them a bit more leeway if they needed to lower it.

I can see the 16GB (won't make it 8GB cause it'll fill up way too quickly) iPad 2 becoming a "3GS" in this situation and be priced at $299 or $399 and sell the 32GB iPad 3 at the original $499 price.

Heck, I even noticed that the iPad 2's were on sale at Meijer for $70 off last week.

(If you don't know what Meijer is, it's a Midwest based supermarket-type store similar to Wal-Mart, but 50x better. They sell pretty much everything you need. Fred Meijer, the guy who started the store chain up here in Michigan and just recently passed away, reminded me of a much nicer Steve Jobs-type person. The stores are famous for having little comfort things, like the Purple Cow ice creamery and a soft drink station and some stores even have a full-service food court! Just thought I'd throw that out there.)

doesnt matter what processor it uses, unless you are a computer buff, chances are people are going to buy it for 2 reasons...1 its made by apple and 2 it looks pretty :D

Well I was thinking about getting an iPad 3, but I don't really see the point of the chip is an A5. Not that it's very important, but since I was trying to decide between a new macbook pro and an iPad 3 I decided to get a macbook pro instead. I know it's not the most reliable source, but this is macrumors so I guess we'll have to wait till the release to see.
I don't understand your post. What information did you get from this article that helped you make your decision?

Ah yes, you got me. This would of course rather be like transition from 3GS to 4.

Aren't in-game graphics "hard-coded" to a certain (maximum) dpi?
I am particularly thinking of textures, backgrounds and sprites...

I am not familiar with game development for iPads... did developers provide higher-resolution graphics than needed (for the iPad 1&2) in their titles - and since when have they done so?
I think you're right about that, but some games will be fine. Keep in mind, these won't look any worse on the newer display, just when updated they'll look much better. I'm working on an app right now, and I'm planning to release it with retina graphics for the iPad 3 right away :D
But, from the rumors, the retina display in the iPad 3 is not a s-ips and would be less costly to manufacturer.
That's possible, but not confirmed. I'd prefer to only pay $499 for an iPad 3 :D

An interesting thought, but not sure what it would mean unless the next round of Mac laptops are going to the A5X as well. If so, might explain why it's not the A6, and might suggest it's plenty powerful for the iPad 3.

The concept you happily believe in ("quad core is better than dual core") is weak and flawed.

A freaking MEN!!!!!!!! listen I hope we get a quad core just for longevity sake but really there are not that many tablet apps that take advantage of the dual cores we have now let alone quad cores.....and the "if you build it they will come" theory just doesn't hold water we would not see a sudden metamorphosis in our apps if we had a quad core tablet to run them on

I would guess no quad core on this.

Each year, it seems like Apple leaves out one thing; iPad 1 (front facing camera). iPad 2 (retina screen). iPad 3 will be the quad core.

Agreed. And I'm sure part of that is so iPad 1 owners aren't left in the dust. Perhaps the introduction A5X or whatever it's called will slowly ease out iPad 1 compatible apps and focus on multi-cores. (or is it possible to code simultaneously for both single and multi-cores?)

They don't have to because next year, they'll jump to Cortex A15 architecture, which will be way bigger jump than dual to quad core Cortex A9. That also fits perfectly with feature upgrade-performance upgrade pattern that Apple used for iPhone. Retina iPad 3 (iPhone 4) -> faster iPad 4 (iPhone 4s).

It's only dual core, so that they can make people upgrade to quad core for iPad 4. Simple Apple business.

I frankly give a flying fxxx about how many cores the chip has, as long as the software runs smooth and is up to the tasks. I am also convinced that probably only 0.5% of the people here on MR would truly understand the implications (advantages/disadvantages) running software on 2 or 4 processor cores.

Relax Naysayers. The display will be amazing and the iPad will run just fine :D

I don't think that people saying they would have bought one if it had a quad core are saying its not going to be great, just that they won't be buying one of it doesn't. At least that's my own view, not that other people will or will not buy it, I actually believe it will sell really well because it seems like apple is putting most of its energy into mobile platforms. Either way, I look forward to hearing about it from you and others that purchase it. Definitely an exciting time for me to see what else they come out with.
