Can anyone here speak to the quality of the Quad Core A9 chip? How does it compare to the chip currently in the iPad 2 in terms of power, efficiency etc?

X=10
A5X would mean A5+X=A15!!

This is an A15 chip which will be dual core and faster than a quad core A6 (different architecture)
But apple doesn't wanna call it an A15 cuz you would mess up the order of things so A5X then quad core would be extremely powerfull (A15 based) A6 then A6X....etc

Ok

Ok

A5X is nothing but a souped up A5, hence the heatsink. Mark my words.

I only want to know if it has enough juice to power the fabled 9.7" "retina" display.

If so, cool

Nobody needs one. Big difference between want and need.

That is true. But the important question is: can you make use of it. I'm pretty sure you can't decide that on the number of cores or generation of the processor. The only way is to do a real life test.

Maybe the X means it is compatible with OSX

But more likely the A5X contains the same Cortex A9 as the A5 combined with some enhanced gfX processor (SGX554?)..

Theories

1. The A5X board is a successful attempt to track a leak, and has nothing to do w/ a real product.

2. The A5X is an improved A5 w/ better graphics.

3. The A5X will be in the 7" iPod Touch, and the iPad 3 still gets an A6...

I think the iPad 3 will be nice. If it has the retina display and is noticeably faster than the iPad 2 it will be a good improvement. Especially if they can hold the same price points.

If it has a retina display it will have enough to power it. Why would Apple do otherwise?

Well now that I've seen the other thread it's a moot point.

What I meant was, if the chip seemed underpowered to display content on such a high resolution screen then maybe we wouldn't get a "retina" iPad 3.

But again, now that the screens have been seen and reported on, whatever chip the next iPad 3 will do the job.

Pwned

Hi all

What people fail to remember is that when the iPad 2 was released it was the first product to have a brand new - not in any other device - A5 processor, which was then used in the iPhone 4S, etc. Therefore the iPad 2 was the first device for a new CPU. I think this time around, the iPad 3 will set the benchmark again for the next iPhone as well.

Its either:-

1. A prototype part deliberately released to create talk / hype without revealing the real component.
2. Cortex speed bumper / core bumped from the current A5 CPU
3. Possible Quad Core CPU with upgraded GPU as well.

Well, I was trying to figure out what I was going to do since I want to get a new MacBook Pro and currently use an iPad 1 but this makes it a lot easier for me to wait for the next upgrade cycle! Sweet!! Either way, I'm sure it'll be awesome. Wish I had money for both unfortunately too many other updates planned. Can't wait to see what it looks like, should be cool!

iPhone > iPhone 3g > iPhone 3gS > iPhone 4 > iPhone 4S
iPad > iPad 2 > iPad 2S > iPad 3 > iPad 3S > iPad 4

The iPad could be following the same redesign pattern as the iPhone. Just a hunch.

Thing is, apple needs to boost specs on their products to outdate their previous ones, so you buy them again.

It also allows them to expand the features of the OS. So don't worry people, they will do something.

Although they didn't do a memory upgrade for the iPhone 4S, so one is coming soon.
