Am I the only one who sees a problem with this naming convention?

iPhone 5S
iPhone 5C

iPhone 6
iPhone 6C

iPhone 6S
iPhone 6SC or what? (Those StarCraft players out there will be very happy)

Calling it the 5C is actually very brilliant. Calling something "Lite" immediately makes the owner feel like they have an inferior product. The commonality between 5C and 5S will make purchasers of the 5C feel good about their product.

Who says they'll even make a "SC"? They could just do upgrades every other year.

Every other year? Cheap phone doesn't necessarily mean outdated.

Actually the "C" stands for "Cheap" as in cheaply made.

----------

Its very outdated. Apple is falling behind.

Maybe English isn't your primary language. Let me help
out·dat·ed adjective \ˌau̇t-ˈdā-təd\
Definition of OUTDATED
: no longer current
Considering it isn't even released yet, this word doesn't apply.

I think the "C" could designate camera or cinema, if they are planning a major camera upgrade. Canon has a "C" line to designate cinema.

I doubt they will give the budget iPhone the same numbering system.

So many haters in these comments. Lol. They think they'll convince people to switch over to android or windows by being annoying.

Everyone in these forums are well aware of their options.

How about the iPhone Core? The core essentials of owning an iPhone. Also a play on words with Apple Core...... just something to think about.

C is for Core

C is for Core is my guess. Stands for the original iPhone 5 which now will come in plastic and in various colours. The iPhone 5 as we know it today will be replaced by the iPhone 5S (Special?).

Edit: ah, beaten to the punch... =P

Oops.

Obviously you just dropped in from an alternate universe because in this one your entire post is factually wrong.

Seriously you are right I did roll over and looked at my gorgeous 17"MBP's screen gleaming at me, beckoning me to indulge in some forum after glow.

That was good s h r _ _ ms I ate, wow, totally was conversing with Siri the hexagonal goddess of wonderment India before before time. Thanks for noticing ^_^

You're good at this!

Yeah... when was the last time you heard anyone say "well Ford would never of let that happen", or "Walt would of never let that happen"? Yeah, like I said he's dead let him be dead and move on.

You haven't been at the board or executive meetings at those companies. Both you mentioned have museums in their name.

Just a matter of time before we see a Steve Jobs Museum in Cupertino. I bet they are prospecting sites for it already.

Learn from the mistakes of those that precede you or you'll repeat it.

I'm thinking from next year will be ....
iPhone C (2014)
iPhone S (2014)

then
iPhone C (2015)
iPhone S (2015)

then either can change as it wants to to hit a market target. The same way Mac's no longer have generational names outside of tech. material.

iPhone 5 Crapola.

That and we are seeing a product fork very similar to the introduction of the Mac Mini as higher priced iMacs were also introduced.

This can lead to a two-tier of product owners with different demographics. Many who use a Mac Mini have it as a second machine alongside a PC and perhaps on a KVM switch or a second computer station in the office or home.

If they are smart, when the 5C starts without a SIM card, it will still function as a iPod Touch without the whole screen "insert SIM card" graphic showing. The phone app will just not work.

I can see this as a huge hit with pre-paid wireless providers. Buy minutes of calling time, the phone part turns on and you use your minutes as you go. Swap out SIM cards and use your friends minutes as needed. This happens a lot in Asia and Europe.

LoL.... again the only place you see "x would never have don't that" is on Apple forums. I know defend papa steve till you're dead but come on now.

You're of course taking it a step further with the museums and such and sure that will happen. A legacy isn't what I'm posting about. If I need to explain to you why I said what I did it's no use.

That naming convention (or lack of naming, better said) doesn't apply to an overselling and popular product like the iPhone. A phone is way different from computers.

Why not?
worked for the iPod.

Then there is the lunatic fringe that is professing he is still alive like TuPac, Elvis and Jim Morrison. But let's not go there.

An image posted on Chinese site WeiPhone appears to show plastic retail packaging marked with the name "iPhone 5C". If the packaging is genuine, and it has not yet been confirmed to be, it could be for Apple's long-rumored plastic iPhone. The image was first noticed by French site Nowhereelse.fr [Google Translate].

[snip]

A number of photos showing plastic rear shells alleged to be for Apple's rumored lower-cost iPhone have surfaced in recent weeks, and Apple is rumored to be launching the device alongside the iPhone 5S later this year.

Borrowing from myself on what I wrote on this topic elsewhere:

I'm very interested to see the teardown on this phone when it (presumably) gets released.

I'm expecting guts that are a pretty close match to the iPhone 5, which will have become less expensive to source and assemble by means of manufacturing maturity. I feel pretty confident in an iPhone-5-matching screen. What's left then is the lower cost backside enclosure. The plastic solution presents very real possibilities for reduced raw material *and* manufacturing costs. The overall BOM could be quite favorable.

If you take that into account and willingly accept a slightly lower margin, the unsubsidized price of that phone can fall a *lot*. And it's still a pretty kick-ass phone, not a crappy product, which Apple is committed to avoiding.

Why not?
worked for the iPod.

And for the iPad. But those are consumer products that compete (or dominate) in markets that are different from the phone market. This are products that people can buy giving a damn about the name because they just want a nice, new and shiny product (look at the MP3 players, in general they don't have generation names and stuff, or at least they didn't when they existed).

On the other hand the iPhone competes with the Galaxy S3, S4... In a mass-focused market where everybody looks more concerned about getting the right letter and number to show off.

Honestly, I don't see just "iPhone" as a standalone name in the future. It may work for Apple fans, not for the general consumer.
