Apple took a while to come up with their own product.

Gameboy colour released November 18, 1998 in the USA.

Apple Macintosh Color Classic released February 1993

Apple was much before Nintendo in using the word color (US spelling) in it's product names.

If the 5c has the same processor and camera as the 5s then this is a no brainer for me. No reason to get the 5s at all.

I have the iPhone 4 still and am TRYING to hold out for the iPhone 6 next spring though. Although that would be expensive and the 6c would be the better choice for me.

I just can't hold out until fall 2014 lol. My iPhone for is getting slow as FCK.

This reeks of Apple of the 90's. Just expanding their product line to the point where it was not financially viable anymore. And it took Jobs to say "you idiots, remove all that crap". And Jobs reduced the product lines to better smaller numbers of product lines.

I would be ok however to have no previous iPhone model on sale. Only the current high end ones and the iPhone C as the cheap end. No more having the last 2 generations for sale like now. This would not add to the number of models being sold as new would place old getting the boot.

I understand one of the key people whispering that line in Steve's Ear was Tim Cook and it was a big reason he is in the position he's in.

Yep, pretty much expecting after release it'll be iPhone 5s & 5c only (maybe 5). Maybe some culling in iPod lines as well.

Hmm, did anyone notice that they have different heights? (See the box near the top right compared to most of the others.) Fake or an iPod Box?

At this point I don't think there's any denying it anymore. The iPhone Color is coming.

I still don't understand what's going on with pricing. The typical pricing is $199, $99, $0 and high-end, mid, low-end respectively. If they price the iPhone 5C at the low-end then what happens next year when they shift the iPhones down the tier and discontinue the low-end model? And if the reports of Apple only offering 2 iPhones and discontinuing manufacturing the iPhone 5 then wouldn't it make more sense to price the iPhone 5 at $0 instead of the iPhone Color?

A lot of people have pointed out that the 5 probably doesn't have the greatest profit margins because it's made out of more costly materials (mainly aluminum). If the 5C is just a 5 made of plastic and in different colors, it'll be cheaper to make, so it'll be priced lower, assuming they keep the 5 around at all.

My guess:
iPhone 5S/6: $199, $299, $399 depending on storage
iPhone 5C: $0/$99, maybe $0 for 8/16 GB and $99 for 16/32 GB

...and discontinue the rest so all the phones being sold have 4" screens (helps devs), Lightning connectors (so they can quit making the old connectors sooner), and are better at keeping up with iOS 7 (so people don't whine). Plus the profit margins are higher on the low-cost phones because they're plastic.

The C stands for choice ... Choice with regards to colour, price, performance, features, materials etc.

My thoughts: there won't be an iPhone 5s and 5c. The high end high phone will be called the 5c which will stand for cloud due to some of the new features included and the lower end iPhone will just be called iPhone. Just like the new iPads.

Holy Crap!!

433 comments so far, about a lousy plastic shell. Apple people are starved for any kind of news.

I don't think the new iPhone will be the low-end one like everyone expects. I think it will be sort of like the iPod Nano - priced in the middle.

My guess is that the iPhone 5C will be the technological equivalent of the iPhone 5. And a low capacity (8GB) iPhone 5 will be the entry level/free phone. Anything with the old dock connector (the iPad 2, the iPod Classic, and the iPhone 4S) will be taken out behind the barn and unceremoniously shot.

iPhone 5 (8GB) - free with contract
iPhone 5C (16GB) - $99 with contract
iPhone 5S (16/32/64) - $199/$299/$399

I would think the 5 simply goes away. If customers want the aluminum and glass enclosure they need to go up the line.

iPhone 5C (16,32GB) - $450, $550 retail or free, $99 on contract.
iPhone 5S (32, 64, 128) - $650, $750, $850 retail, or $199, $299, $399.

Yeah cause he was dead when the iPhone 4 leaked.

There have been leaks for years with and without Steve. Only way there would not be leaks if if everything was made by Apple in a giant center with zero cell phone service or Internet and no one was allowed to leave. Like willy wonkas

Don't give Apple any ideas

Uh oh. Looks like that iPhone 5 C(heap) is really coming. Sad news as the premium standards are coming to an end under Cook.

An entirely plastic box with each iPhone? Is that cost effective? Or environmental?

Paper and plastic can be recycled. Plastic more so than paper in the case of coated paper vs plastic. The plastic box could also be reused by the consumer. People assume that because something is made of plastic it must be evil.

And the $99 price matches as well.

Looks like a Samsung had beat Apple to the punch with their plastic phones.

Queue up the lawsuits from Samsung - Apple using plastic copied us!

Oh C'mon. iPod mini jokes are so 2004

Every time I look at that photo I laugh. It reminds me of all the plastic haters with their extreme fear of the very material that I find ever so useful.

They aren't plastic haters, just haters. There is a difference.

Lol let me guess. You guys don't believe this picture either? No plastic iPhone, no plastic box, no 5S, right?

No. Just because one might find the picture of a bunch of jumbled boxes a fake doesn't mean they think a lower cost iPhone isn't likely. The picture is probably fake because as I noted in an earlier post, they would get scratched up and become unusable stored in that fashion. Manufacturing is careful to ensure finished product is stored properly because haste makes waste and waste decreases profit.
