I don't think the new iPhone will be the low-end one like everyone expects. I think it will be sort of like the iPod Nano - priced in the middle.
My guess is that the iPhone 5C will be the technological equivalent of the iPhone 5. And a low capacity (8GB) iPhone 5 will be the entry level/free phone. Anything with the old dock connector (the iPad 2, the iPod Classic, and the iPhone 4S) will be taken out behind the barn and unceremoniously shot.
iPhone 5 (8GB) - free with contract
iPhone 5C (16GB) - $99 with contract
iPhone 5S (16/32/64) - $199/$299/$399

Seriously I doubt somebody went to the trouble of mold injection for not just one of these things but a bucketful. I think this is the real deal.
Then after diligent thought Apples Marketing geniuses came up with Mavericks.
I'm not sure that makes sense. It would be pretty confusing to have your most expensive and cheapest product share design, while the middle ground has a different design and multiple colors.
No, it's probably the base of the casing, and the iPhone will "stand" in this part, with possibly a clear cover that slides over the phone and snaps into this base, to showcase the phone from all sides.
It was all rumors that said this will be a "low cost product". I've seen some shots of body shells for what we think is or will be the iPhone 5S, but I haven't seen much about the 5S since then. THIS phone could be the next iPhone itself. After all, it's all rumors and for all we know, in the spirit of "Mavericks", this iPhone could end up being the:
iPhone5(C)alifornia
^Sounds stupid, I know, but I thought the "Mavericks" name was kinda dumb, too.

Maybe these are a bottom, and the iPhone will sort of stand upright with a clear shell bubble around it. Looks big enough to hold ear pods and a cable. Then you could easily see the back color of the phone and its size (printed on the back of the phone). Just a thought.
I suppose there will still be older variants of the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 still being sold on the market. So just to help consumers know its a newer model of the infamous iPhone 5.
Once they've gotten rid of all older iPhone's (no more iPhone 4, and iPhone 4S -or even iPhone 5) they'll soon switch to "the new iPhone" with "iPhone C" and "iPhone S", possibly autumn 2014.

College kids and emerging nation citizens could buy a 5C ... and then use the packaging for microwaving and storing noodles!

Makes sense to call it the 5C.
The 5 reminds consumers that it's not an "old" out of date phone. Apple going to the larger screen size and new connector allows the customer to feel part of the modern Apple Eco-system.
The C will be said to stand for Color, but Apple won't really mind that elitists refer to it as Cheap or Crap, because that kind of pressure will push more people to splurge for the higher margin S, which makes Apple more money.
Makes total sense to eliminate the plain 5 with this naming convention. I'm guessing the C is basically a 5 in plastic clothing.
The question will be what happens next year....doubt we'll have a 5CS and 6 model. They can come up with a whole new convention to allow for new sizes, etc.

Assuming the new handset has the same design. Even if it does (which I think is likely), how is that confusing? Are people mistakenly going to buy one instead of the other? Was that a problem with the iPhone 4 and 4S?
Apple tends to market their products by price tier, so I don't think it's going to be problematic for the consumer.

Hello folks. For what it is worth
I spoke to a person who basically works for Apple Management. His theory, which could be true, is that the new lower-cost phone will come in colors but it will be more of the anodized aluminum that you see the iPod touch currently utilizing. He states that the iPhone casing that everyone has seen in plastic is an absolute fake.
