I didn't give much attention to the horizon

Feel free to practise 'horizon straightening' on this shot. ;)

Cwmyoy church leans in different directions, without (yet) falling over. The tower - behind me in this shot - leans even more than the tower in Pisa...

wow that's very interesting! do you have a pic of the tower by any chance?

Gorgeous light and atmosphere. The blue hue of the mountains in the back is nice, I was actually drawn to it initially rather than the foreground. Good job!

Thanks, macrumormonger, though I'm not so sure that's actually a good thing! Honestly, the way I initially visualized this shot was with more orange in the foreground (with some softer light coming from the right), but I don't have enough lights to pull it off with such a large subject. Maybe it's just as well, though. Sometimes my accidents are better than my ideas. ;)

Thanks for the C&C. I didn't give much attention to the horizon (I know I should have). Tried editing the photo. Is this one better? Thanks:)

Yes, that's better, but you still have lots of crushed shadows. Sometimes those can work for a photo, but it helps if your subject isn't mostly a black hole in the center of the shot. I do like the photo, though.

Great colours and a nice use of wireless flash to illuminate the underside of the foreground metal.

Out of interest what set-up are you using to fire the extra flashes?

I use Cybersyncs. For longer exposures where I need more light from my puny little Speedlites, I hold the trigger in my hand (instead of mounting it on the hotshoe) and fire away continually, as fast as the flashes can recycle. I really need to get some more capable lights.

And for today, something a little different. I always wondered how bales of hay got to be so perfectly round. So much for my giant pastry tube theory... :p

I'd have flagged the lower portions to stop the light from the flash being on the ground- otherwise an excellent shot, but if the light wasn't on the ground, I think it'd look less artificial. Still very good to see your continued work with lighting- it's very inspiring. CTO on the lights?

Many thanks for the feedback, Paul. I had actually hoped to do just the opposite, extending that light on the ground to include that whole little bushy island. I wanted it to look like the whole island was magically glowing, but I didn't have enough lights to do it. However, perhaps what you've suggested is another means to the same end. Maybe I'll give that a try sometime.

Anyway, thanks for your kind words, and yes CTO on all lights. At least that's one good thing about using Speedlites: it's cheap to gel them all!

Not too impressed with this, people have said they like it, but I had to have the ISO up high to take the pictures quickly (semi busy road), quality isn't exactly great as a result.

Taken just the other day, but my first chance to get onto a computer!

There is a nice set of similar photo's on Flickr if you click!

What's the need for the ISO 3200? Surely you could compensate with 1/1000 and ISO 800 to maintain exposure and capture the movement?

Lacy - redux 3

Up at 7000'. I've posted a couple of other shots of Lacy in the past. I'm trying out b/w to see if it works... should it be more contrasty, or more grain to simulate film? Thoughts? Better background would have been nice... but... oh well. ;)

BTW: the little white streaks in the shot are flying snowflakes. It was fairly windy, and this was a fairly slow shutter speed.

On the theme of high ISO, isn't ISO 8000 the point at which a picture just breaks up into fractured pixels. Digital noise just doesn't have the 'warmth' of film grain... :(

Oh, but it does to me, and in fact I like high ISO digital B/W as much as low ISO photos. High ISO images are where my D700 shines most.

This here is at 12,800 ISO:

A lot of my shooting is done at 6400 and above. I'll routinely hit 8,000-12,000 these days. Remember, though, that I'm using a D700, and the D3/700 sensor is special in that regard. The only cameras that can really keep up with it are the D3s (which outshines it), the 1D Mark IV, and 5D Mark II (which I don't think has quite the same ability, despite having the same rating).

I should note that I don't use NR at all, so what you see is what you get.

I never meant for it to be ISO 3200, I think it did that because the flash was turned off.
