I would like to be able to get some shots like this. Hockey is my favorite sport and I've been working at getting a pass to get some photos around the net area so please post more like this ;) Nice colors and the focus (his in his eyes) give that certain feeling when someone is in the zone…

Last cat photo for awhile, I promise :)
[N.B. If I don't stop posting these I will end up in Doylem's thread on Irrational dislikes? or Phrasikleia's thread on Photographic Clichés]

Also, the one from yesterday with her yawning wasn't taken wide open as I remembered, but was actually at f/5.6. I'd started at f/2.8 but noticed the DOF issues early. f/5.6 was working well until she yawned, but at that point is was simply *click* and hope the AF picked the right focus point. It obviously didn't. I recalled starting at f/2.8 but it wasn't until I went back and looked at the EXIf data that I remembered that I had stopped down later. Oopsie.

Thank you for the comment. I have several similar around the net, will post tomorrow. It was difficult getting good shots as the glass was very scratched up. I had to constantly adjust my stance based on where the players were.

Welcome and great! I had a friend that had a press pass and he moved to Vermont of all places so I never got to get to the cutouts in the glass area of HSBC here in Buffalo. I also lost one of two people that enjoyed sushi so it has been a long winter, no perks for hockey photos and no sushi :( Your photo was well enjoyed. The glass gets marked up really bad at times and they don't or can't get all those marks out which I feel for you on that. I'm trying to get local shots for some friends but those rinks are way worse and the stands are well, really cold ;)

Impressive photo, but dude, it's a 45 MB download! Watch your file size when you upload to Flickr.

Note to All: I have been starting the thread for a while now. I don't mind, but I feel like I'm having all the fun. If you want the honor, send me a PM.

I don't think it's your obligation to start the thread... whoever wants to post a pic to POTD, and it's the first day of the new month, and there's not already a thread started... well, just start the new thread. At least that always worked before.

cheers...

^ ^ ^ ^ Thanks, Reef, Cliff3. Maybe I've been overdoing it but it's the main subject (cyclocross events/people) I've been shooting over the fall season, so I don't really have anything else to share for now... but more of the same. Glad you enjoyed the coverage. I really enjoy your "reef" shots, too. They never fail to impress, both with light and style. Keep them coming!

Outstanding! This may be my new favorite from you. I love how the water takes the eye from top to bottom, and then the log directs us back up to the top of the cascades again, at which point we slide back down for another loop. Each time I slowly scan along these paths, I discover more delightful little passages on either side of the frame. Really beautifully composed.

Wonderful use of B&W and a terrific capture of stasis and dynamism.

You can add me to the list of admirers of your series. What impressed me the most was your range with it; you had such a great variety of images. My favorite of them all might be the one where we're looking down on a biker from above, with striated mud all around him bearing witness to the event's scale, energy, and challenges.

Thanks Phrasikleia :) It was an interesting morning down there to say the least.
The waterfall was in a small ravine, reachable by climbing off the 'tourist' track.
Getting down there was a bit difficult, involved climbing down a small cliff (I'm fresh meat for the irrational dislikes thread :p) and I ended up breaking some of my gear once down the bottom, where I slipped over on a mossy patch that I misjudged in the light rain. :( It was nice down there though.
It's funny, looking from the lookout that the tourist track led to above wasn't nearly as nice, you'd hardly realise the waterfall was there.

Thanks pdxflint, I kind of stopped posting them for a while, now that I've time I'll try some more, they're good fun to do!

I think my favourites were the symmetrical shot with the bikers carrying their machines up the stairs and the 180° turn, marrying photojournalism and art (as most of them did really well).

Happy New Year everyone!
May 2011 bring you peace and happiness! (and great photos :))

Eh? It's 4.7MB. Plus, I only link to the large size from Flickr when posting here. You can't upload larger than 20MB to Flickr with a Pro account and 15MB max with free. I accidentally had a ~50MB JPEG saved once (something Photoshop saved weird I think), and Flickr wouldn't let me upload that one, so there's no way this photo is anywhere near that large.

Also, this is my first Explored photo on Flickr!
