Is that a fox?! Or is it a dog? Beautiful animal, whatever it is!

I don't usually shoot in colour, so this is relatively new territory for me. Thoughts? Too over processed? I have one that tones it down a bit.

Yes, I would agree that you went a bit too far. It's a nice combination of colors (blue and yellow are complements of each other), but they look too emphatic, and the chroma noise and halos showing in the sky aren't helping. It's nice how the steam is catching some golden light, though.

Sailing into Venice...

I like the way the clouds seem to have parted to make way for the top of the campanile.

Great shot!

ISO2000, 1/5sec, F/6.3, 360mm, +0.3 EV.

The plane had started its takeoff roll, probably would have been doing about 60kts when captured here. I much prefer to do this sort of low shutter speed panning type photo. If I were doing it again, I might have used ISO4000 and a smaller aperture to get more of a star-burst effect from the lights.

Okay, are you using Nikon? Might be active D-lighting setting. That must be a camera setting or something in your editing application.

Those star bursts look pretty great to me as they are. Wonderfully dynamic photo.

my Eagle photo turned out like crap. huge halo around the subject. Time to try it again for another 50th time :(

Yeah, that halo around the eagle has to be due to the D-lighting setting, and if you shot it in RAW, it can be removed in Nikon's software (as I understand it). If it's not D-lighting, then it's some other setting in the RAW software (maybe too much fill light or too much clarity?). If it was shot in JPEG, then the halo is now one with the image, unfortunately; it will take some very careful masking to get rid of it.

Another really attractive use of this treatment. I found myself mentally wandering through this scene for quite a while.

The OOF reddish hues really help the green ones to vibrate. They are right on the edge of the photo, however, so they really draw the eye away from the leaves. If there had been some way to align them closer to the in-focus leaves, that might have been a good solution.

Just a quick thought on this, I think you might be able to use the blend mode lighten/darken to save you some effort.

You can set a brush to only effect colours lighter than your selected colour so select the sky and as the eagle is darker than the sky (apart from the head which doesnt look so bad) it should only paint the sky colour on the lighter halo.

Thanks, the good thing is that this is right outside my living room window so I have plenty of opportunity to play with the shot.

Yeah, you're definitely right. I think most of the noise came from when I ran it through the film effects option of Color Efex 3, but it's definitely a case of trying to get too fancy for the sake of being fancy. The one without the film noise added to it looks much better.

Your seascapes are always so ethereal, they barely look like they're from this planet!

I really like the simplicity and off-the-cuff nature of this one. Works great in b&w! It's a strangely compelling image.

Here's mine for today. I wish I knew what mountain this is. It's a view down a valley from the Elbow Lake Fire Trail (or something like that) this past summer. I really do not go hiking enough, considering how close I live to the Rockies! Also, if I was unreasonably rich, I would totally build a fortress of solitude deep within that peak, haha!

Thanks! :)

Love this avro, incredible contrast of the sharp plane and blurred background lights.

It's good to see Qantas still kicking, but for how long?

Also - keen to share your vantage point for these fantastic shots? :D

Thanks - love those shots of yours - very dramatic. :) The location for my shots is the Sydney Airport International Terminal observation deck. I stand at the end in front of the section with the safety wires above the fence. You can photograph through those wires easily - they don't show up in the photo at all. :) I use a Wimberley Tripod Head II for this kind of stuff.

I don't know how long the observation deck will remain, the new masterplan for the airport doesn't seem to show anything like that - at least to start with anyhow.

^^ And yet another...

Enjoying a sun break at the Nisqually Delta Wildlife Preserve.

Wow, I didn't realize how long it's been since I've been in here. I have a lot of catching up to do. In the mean time, I figured I would go ahead and post for the first time in what feels like forever. We took a trip about a month ago to visit my sister in Kansas City and meet my new niece. We stopped in Saint Louis along the way so I have a bunch of photos from there.

Very nice shot. I love the mood, and the treatment you gave to this photo.

Thanks for the comments guys :)

One of your best Reef! Really nice depth and structure...with the bright pink area providing a terminus at the end of the channel leading towards it. I'm really loving that sky! Have you considered 'losing' the bright light at the left edge of the horizon?

Thanks P, I tried to include the ship in the shot, although you're probably right, it doesn't do much falling off the edge of the frame over there. This place was amazing, the sheer scale of everything was unbelievable - huge rocks and powerful waves.
I was perched on top of one of the large rocks you see for this shot as the huge waves crashed below me... it makes you feel so insignificant when you see that nature can swallow you in a heartbeat.
I was aiming for some black and white exposures with those angry clouds, but the skys opened and managed to capture some of that pink light shining through. I appreciate the feedback!

Thanks for the info :) Very keen to try this next time I'm in Sydney.

I was pleased with this shot given that the car was moving in the parade when I took it.
