If only we could get this thread to 28 pages in the next few hours. Would be fitting on an obsessive/compulsive level....

On a totally unrelated note, Silver EFEX Pro 2.0 is now available and shipping. Yes, wrong thread. But just hoping to foster some replies to get us to the 28th page before the 28th day ends. Either that, or I have to go out and try to shoot something presentable before midnight.

Sorry to disappoint
FWIW, some people may have their profile set up to display more posts per page, for example mine says this is page 17.

Bleh, you just ruined my night :) Stupid internet with adjustable settings. Choice. Overrated. Hrummmpf.

Here is my shot for the day, a hurried rush of a recent pic through PP to at least get MY page count on this thread to 28.

Oh, C&C welcome (as long as it's before midnight and doesn't take the thread to 29 pages--this isn't a leap year folks :) )

OK, my attempt to assist in the effort! Good call on choosing B&W for this one. It has a nice tonal range, and I doubt the icicles on the house would be as apparent in color. It's interesting to see how far this tree looms over the house, and the photo provides a strong sense of the season, with the snow and bare branches filling up the frame. What I'm missing is a base for the photo, since we see the ground level of neither the tree nor the house. Also, the tree and the house receive roughly equal visual weight, and neither presents a clear focal point for the image; the photo therefore looks rather unresolved, more like a slice of a larger photo than one that contains all of its essential elements.

There. Are we at page 28 yet?? :)

Looks cold there :) Getting closer? ;)

Too busy. Can't tell what the subject is.

Bless you. But we are still on page 27 on my browser. But getting closer....

On a more serious note, I really appreciate your comments. They are spot on. When I viewed this on my computer after the fact, I was left with a similar sensation of having "cut off the bottom" of the image. The problem is that the "bottom" was not photogenic at all--basically there is a garage in the way split with a very ugly backyard that doesn't fit at all with the composition. So I aimed a little higher trying to avoid the background "clutter" and include more tree. I was thinking of forest pictures where it can be desirable to avoid the ground for the same reasons of clutter. Unfortunately for this image, having "half a house" is a bit unsettling.

The other point you made about having a clear subject (is it the tree or is it the house?) is one that I have been noticing in many of my images. While certain things catch my eye (lines, curves, patterns) I find that I sometimes struggle in my compositions to really commit to one clear subject. I have a penchant for straddling the fence and trying to include 2 subjects without clearly emphasizing one over the other. My own indecision gets projected to the viewer--which doesn't make for a strong composition or a compelling image. It also doesn't help that my penchant for lines and curves often results in chaotic images with too many lines/curves going all over the place in an image rather than clearly leading the eye to the subject.

Thanks for your comments Phrasikleia. While on a superficial level I was joking about asking for critiques, as usual you responded with insightful and helpful comments. All the while framing them in the same tongue-in-cheek vein as my post. Well done and greatly appreciated :)

Yes on both counts. But we missed the cutoff, at least based on East Coast time. Bummer.

You are absolutely right. While I would like to say it's because I rushed to post this (and chose a weak image) in an effort to bring the thread to 28 pages as a little joke, the reality is that your criticism applies to many of my images. I often compose "cluttered" images that don't have a clear subject. Not always true, but it happens more than I would like. Your point is well taken.
