Welcome to Photo of the Day! TL;D (want to) R? 1 photo per day, SFW, you took the picture.

The POTD thread was started by iGary, a professional photographer in May, 2006 and converted to a monthly thread in November 2007 by Arn, the owner of MR.

Photo of the Day is intended to be a showcase for your best pictures. There is no limit to your gear, just your imagination. Smartphone, P&S, aSLR, dSLR, 4x5, 8x10….all good. There are no themes like the Weekly Contest or this years’ P52.

Thread policies and guidelines:

*One photo (photo file) per day - Don't post more than one photo each day. Yes, you may post a diptych, triptych, collage, versions (b/w and colour), the front and back of your subject, a new image paired with an older image for historical reference….just DON’T flood the thread with multiple photos on the same day… or in the same post. Reason being this is to entice people to come back here to see the work of others…on a daily basis. See here and here

*Your photo should be your own work (unless you post a 2nd image for reference, historical reasons, for us to compare) And if a discussion runs into a conundrum feel free to post a link to a video.

*Multi-quote - To comment on several photos, click the "+ (Multi-Quote) button. This puts all your comments in one post. Multi-Quoting is required on all of the MacRumors forums. So tick on multi-quote button from posts you want to react on, and at the bottom hit the “Insert quotes… button.

*SFW (Safe for Work) only - This is a site - wide rule. If you wouldn't show it in a public place, then it's NSFW (Not Safe For Work). Think before you post. Really, anything goes, as long as it’s SFW. Should you be interested in only posting photos of a single subject, check out this page; threads with a single topic, like beer, cats, dogs, your car et cetera.

*Describe your photo - Tell what it is and where you took it. If you know the EXIF data of a photo, include it. The following EXIF fields are recommended: Camera, ISO, Focal Length, Shutter/Aperture and Lens. This usually can be seen when the photo is attached and not embedded, but EXIF is not available for viewers using Tapatalk. So, please, type out at least Aperture, ISO, shutter speed, focal length, and - if relevant - location.

Failing these policies and guidelines obviously won’t excoriated you for it. We’re a happy bunch over here, with good fellowship, fraternity and the occasional dad joke 👀

* Should you want CC (constructive criticism) on your photo please post it in this thread instead. More threads on photography over here *
** Anyone may start the POTD thread on the first of the month in their timezone. Scroll down on this page, hit ‘edit’ and add a link to your newly created POTD thread. Please copy a quote of this post so we’re all on the same page **
*** To see all of our past POTD threads (up to July 2013) please see the sticky thread here ***
**** To see all of the POTD threads from August 2013 onwards see the thread here ****
***** Info on file size (unsure if this is still the case in 2023) *****

Ha, no! Actually it’s raining cats and dogs over here, so I’m stuck at home, doing stuff I’m not supposed to do. Reading old threads, reading between the lines.
is it actually february where you are yet?

Well, not just yet. In 2 hours it is. I just wanted to post an 'updated version' of the POTD guidelines before someone else posts a link to the new thread for this month.

Another of the Ektacolor 5254 shots. For those too young to recall this was C-22 tungsten balanced color negative movie film. Large mail order labs would wind this onto 35mm cassettes and offer negs and slides all for a price enough less than the cost of Kodachrome or Ektachrome, that it seemed worth a try. Worse than that they sent along a replacement roll with the finished order. You were supposed to use a dark blue filter which dropped the effective ISO to about 25 or one of the labs offered to correct in process leaving the ISO at 100. Either way the slides were soft as they were printed emulsion to emulsion from the negs, and you had to project through the film base. The negs to put it mildly were a beast to print. You usually had to send them back to the original labs to get good prints. That said the film was much more forgiving than a typical slide film, as under or over exposure was corrected when they printed the slides. IMO the color balance of the slides was also a bit superior to the E-4 slide films of the era.

I did say the negs were a beast to print, but for whatever reason the combo of my old Epson scanner and ImageCapture do a good job with color balance right out of the gate. However the initial image is brutally flat if not originally shot in direct sunlight. This one required a soft light overlay and additional corrections just to show this much life. If I were going to do anything else with it, I would select everything from the treeline down and do additional contrast and brightness corrections on that portion of the image.
