I've been doing a lot of b&w imagery lately. It's an interesting challenge to "think in black and white", something I've fallen out of the habit of over the years. There are several people in this subform who do excellent b&w work and they have inspired me to get my brain re-sharpened, so thank you!

Colorado, at least the plains where Denver sits, can be dull in winter color-wise. Brown and blue essentially, so it pays to look for shapes, contrast, tones and so forth. I started out with this being a reject because it was pretty underexposed. I was using a dark red filter on the lens and hadn't compensated for the light loss (I think it's something like 3-3.5 stops or so). Early morning light. After a few minimal adjustments, I ended up liking it for where the highlights fell, not just on the cottonwoods but the grasses too. The grass highlights give it a nice horizon line as well as a "reflection" quality as the highlights come towards the camera. I also liked how the red filter handled the sky.

I usually list my settings but I didn't realize that a friend had come over so I was race posting last night. After what seemed like a long wait (in reality it was only two weeks) I finally got the adapter from China that I ordered for my vintage fuji lens. But I was also out of light, so this was at iso 6400, f/2.2 and 1/60 and it's still a bit underexposed but it was the best i could to with the time I had (it was either this or no photo yesterday).

The actual caption is "faded, but still beautiful."
