TIMG TIMG!

I've been viewing this thread for quite some time and have bought a few prints off of people who have posted here (and was told I could not purchase a print by some poster here). All I know is the attitudes around here have changed and it behoove people to change back because chances are most of us are nothing more than people with cameras and day jobs. The few, if any, who really hold the title "professional" would know exactly how to dish out criticism. I don't post here daily or even enough to call it often, I can certainly see the attitudes deterring people from posting.

Great shot. :)

Lord, people are touchy today...

No kidding...and they continue to be.

There are a lot of people who come to this thread because they know there is a good chance someone will care enough to offer constructive criticism or at least a thoughtful opinion. Those who want nothing but kudos will stick with flickr, where cheerleading is the norm and a photo will mostly amass a bunch of animated trophies. I like to think that this thread is more cerebral than that, and everyone's input matters. Contrary to what was said above, one needn't be a "professional" for their input to be valuable; it's enough merely to be thoughtful and respectful, which most folks here are.

Superhero in training
I had an idea of a kid playing superhero with his cape blowing behind him. It didn't work so good because the fabric was too heavy.

Love the color of the water... Mountain Lake, or Puget Sound? My daughter talked me into watching Twilight last night, and that is what I thought of when I saw this image, great work.

As for mine... The King Salmon are back, and the commercial guys are out trolling. I saw two sport fishermen in smaller boats pull in a fish each from my deck tonight. The Troller in the foreground has the wildest paint job I have ever seen on a boat... this weekend will be the last day of our King Salmon Derby, so the boats will be out in force! currently the largest fish to weigh in so far was over 44 pounds... Wish I had a boat of my own...

Shot data is in the exif data embedded in the file, and the larger shot seems to be more saturated...

Thank you! It is Lake Diablo in the north Cascades (Mountain lake).

I just read back a few pages, is there anything in photography that is more controversial than hdr?

Although I don't agree with calling someone's photo ugly or that they are sad for not seeing that. I like that people are free to critic and express their opinions here. If you share your photography on the internet eventually someone is going to be critical about it. People are critical of mine all the time.

I love visiting this thread each day and I love it even more when a good discussion breaks out.

Well, I love criticism, because I believe it makes me a better photographer.

I love going through this thread regularly and seeing all the pictures. Some I just scan over, but other I just have to stop and stare for a few minutes, because they are so stunning.

I dont know the correctness of proper composition, and lighting and all that stuff; just when a shot looks good.

I am not a person who will settle for mediocrity in my photographs. So I will keep practicing and hopefully continue to grow as a photographer. Your C&C really helps me out, and I appreciate those who take the time to do so.

With that said, can someone please C&C the shot I posted a few days ago which I quoted here? :D

Thanks

Good post pdxflint.

+1 Except when discussion turns nasty. ;)

I really like most of Valdors HDRs he's able to get them in the right conditions and they look outstanding, but other times some people use it unnecessarily where loooking for the sun light would usually be better as we learn from Doylem :p.

Yesterday I was out and there was a great scene in the light and just as I got there the light went behind the clouds for the day. I gave HDR a shot, but didn't do anything for the image it looked much worse. I think most of the time people use it in the wrong situation which gives it a bad name (where real light would probably work better), but in the right situation (and technique) it can produce some really amazing work.
Anyway thats just my opinion. ;)

To be honest, I think Clix Pix was being a troll. A comment like that was sure to set off a firestorm, and it did...

For the record, I think everyone should be able to post their photos and everyone should feel free to provide polite, respectful constructive criticism or commentary... that's how art works. But personal attacks and categorical denunciations of people's work (a la its ugly) show ignorance at best, and are annoying to read to say the least.

In fact, it is precisely the ignorant who can't formulate true criticism and hence resort to generalizations, attacks and epithets.

OK, I'll have a go. Whenever we reduce something to a silhouette in a pic, it's best if it still creates a recognisable shape. This isn't some 'rule of photography', just an observation. For example, if a person's head is in silhouette, it really only works if seen from front (or back...) or, better still, in profile. A 'three-quarter' view won't make much 'visual sense'.

At first sight your pic looked like a ship, or a submarine, silhouetted against the sky. I looked again, and realised it was actually a stand in a stadium, surrounded by floodlights. The silhouette itself isn't too interesting, and the sunset is pretty low-key too. There's no real subject, and the pool of black in the foreground adds nothing to the pic. So I wasn't sure what it was about this particular scene that interested you.

I'm of the opinion that if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all. Let's try that. :)

I know I've not been here for years and I'm not what you'd call a "regular", but here's my view.

Photo Of The Day seems to me to be a photo sharing thread where you post for the enjoyment of others. It strikes me that if you want structured critique on the photos you place here, then you should really be starting a dedicated thread with them.

I post a fair few photos here, and many of them pass by without comment. I don't view this as being negative and I'm not nieve enough to think that no comments mean my photos suck.

Negative feedback can be constructive, but you need to be able to read it in the spirit in which it was intended. Even if the tone isn't right, take something away from it if you can. If the comments are really awful, then just walk away - after all it's only one person's opinion.
