Nice framing and a wonderful limited color palette.

Along the Missouri River-Part Duex; facing north

alongi15201206023276.jpg

These pictures were taken on the river traveled by the American explorers, Lewis & Clark, in the very early 1800s. This area is just south of the "Great Falls of the Missouri River," present day Great Falls, MT.

Is this anywhere near Gates of the Mountains or Meriwether Canyon, site of the 1949 Mann Gulch fire?

That's a great shot. In 2000 I spent 3 months at Malmstrom AFB, Great Falls. I fly fished that section of river as often as I could. Thanks for the memory jogger.

Glad it brought back some good memories. There were several fisherman floating just south of there that day, but I could not good access to snap a picture. :(

This was taken about 30-45 minutes north of both of those.

Thanks for the reply. I'm a fire history buff. I've visited the North Cascades Smokejumper Base in Winthrop Washington and the Thirty Mile Fire memorial. The Missoula base and Mann Gulch are on my visit list. Maybe this summer.

I believe there are still boat rides up the Missouri starting just north of Helena, MT that go through the Gates of the Mountains and right by the Mann Gulch fire site. I am not aware of easy access to Mann Gulch, however. Nice photos of the Thirty Mile Fire.

For those of you who don't know what Gates of the Mountains are and don't want to google it, I'll explain. As the Lewis and Clark expedition was traveling south on the Missouri River, they approached a mountainous formation that at first looked as if the river suddenly ended. it was actually two mountain ridges and part of a gorge that were on opposite sides of each other at the river's edge. As you approach, it looks as if a gate is swinging open as the two ridges separate optically. I can't remember if was Lewis or Clark (probably Clark) who described it in his diary.

"Easy access" isn't a term associated with Smokejumpers...:D When a crew is given the description "Rough terrain", the response is "Rough terrain! Give us rough terrain!!

A video I found on YouTube. The song is Cold Missouri Waters by Cry, Cry, Cry

Is this the right thread to request C&C? I was pretty excited when I saw this through the viewfinder, but once I got it on my computer I was thoroughly disappointed. Great scene, of course, but it just looks awful to me. Any suggestions on how I could have done better? I did a little cropping, and some clone stamp to remove a ghastly orange glow where the sun met the horizon, other than that it's unmanipulated.

Interesting post. James Keelaghan wrote the tune Cold Missouri Waters... you can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qomNoN7MCYg Always thought that was a great tune and story. As I understand it, the surviving smokejumper later succumbed to a cancer. Brave people... this in a time when my region has been recently brought to a halt due to forest fires. That was a great video you suggested.

Close up of a centuries old landmark for all travelers, Native American or otherwise, in north central MT. This outcropping, known as Square Butte, seen as a storm front approaches.

What a lovely pic: kinda makes me smile when I look at it (and I'm not really sure why). Nicely seen and put together, and the sepia treatment suits the subject. It demonstrates that there are pictures everywhere, if you keep your eyes open... :)

Wonder if it might be worth cropping a bit off the bottom??

Awesome "GRAND" landscapes! I bet those would look awesome on large prints!

Here's mine for today... Palace courtyard in Madrid...

Those Madrid shots are awesome man! I'm planning on going to Spain and possibly Paris in September. Keep 'em coming!

Nice perspective. It reminds me of looking up at fireworks in the air.

Thank you Ms. P for the compliment. I really don't have any idea how to describe the photo until you mentioned about like it was like looking at the fireworks. I'm really learning a lot in this forum by asking wonderful photographers like you who shares their skills/knowledge.

Not a snake. Some branches perhaps. There aren't a lot of snakes in the netherlands.

I like the perspective of your flower shot. Fireworks as Mrs. P. pointed out.

Thanks Oblomow, I thought It was a snake waiting to ambush the frog. Thanks for liking my flower picture too.
