Scan from a photo of a sunset I took in Feb. 1983 when I was stationed at Oceana Naval Air Station in VA Beach. I was a Naval Photographer (PH)...the best job in the Navy, from which I retired as a Senior Chief Petty Officer (E8) after 24 years of active duty and 6 years in the reserves.

Rattlesnake hunting at squirrel boulder area near our house.
I hope you were using at least a 1800mm lens.
Metadata says 120mm. I was maybe 15 feet away and he wasn't paying any attention to me. I came out to photograph him after seeing him circling the boulder. We witnessed this guy frequently and he was always quite docile, he went his way and we went our way. Haven't seen him in a few years.
