Here in recession-hit Britain we are reduced to selling our clothes. I sold everything (except my underpants) yesterday, raising enough money to buy a bottle of White Lightning cider to drink in the park. We used to have an empire, you know... :p

I hear you about the weather. We've had unrelenting grey skies and rain for a while now. I call this part of the year one of the two seasonal "tweeners." The first one usually comes in late November, after the last of the autumn foliage has dropped and the snow hasn't yet come to bring new visual interest. The second one is now, after the snow has melted and we are again left with ugly, leafless trees everywhere. Blech.

To answer your question: I do not travel light, much to the dismay of my knees and hips. My only other camera is a gripped 7D, which is no lighter than the 5D Mark III. If I just want mementos, I use my phone; it's kind of all or nothing for me.

Blech indeed! Pretty much the same here except we don't usually get much snow.

I can offer feedback rather than advice, because I am not really a ‘street photographer’, in the usual sense of the words. But I like people in my pix, whether I’m in town or country. I always shoot with a tripod - picking a composition, sorting out my settlings and then seeing what happens within that rectangle. That allows me to concentrate on one thing at a time, which I find enjoyable... almost meditative.

If someone makes a good shape within the composition, that’s generally enough for me! So no in-depth character studies, and no ‘in your face’ aggression either. I’m visible, and don’t hide, and I’m happy to show people what I’m doing. It’s very easy to make people look stupid in pictures, but that’s not what I’m about. I do have to deal with a few people who don’t like what I’m doing, but I know my rights. I’m more relaxed these days, about photographing people I don’t know, and that may help to calm potentially volatile situations. If someone says “Can I ask you why you’re taking photos?”, I’ll flash my best smile, say “Yes, yes you can”, and then carry on shooting. They generally walk away, lost in thought!

I hope to get a top-notch compact camera later this year, which might help to loosen up my photography. A tripod is my number one accessory, but it can make you (and your pix) a bit ‘static’...

I'm not a street shooter either really, in the sense that I haven't done it before, but I decided to try to challenge my reluctance and have a go without being intrusive about it. Thank you for your advice.

You talked about getting a more compact camera later in the year and for what it's worth I'll tell you my experience in case it's useful to you. I also decided to get one, for pretty much the same reason as you, though I do very much enjoy your style, plus the advantage of not carrying so much weight all the time. In doing this I'm going to have to eat my words about what I'd said earlier this year about cameras!

Earlier this year I bought a Sony NEX 7. Nice weight, comfortable to hold, good write ups. I bought it as a kit with the 18-55 lens. Tried it out a few times and although it was okay I wasn't happy. I don't think the 18-55 does justice to the camera and I didn't want to wait until the summer for the Zeiss 32mm to come out so I returned it. Did some more research and read about the quality of the photos from Fuji X-series cameras then, giving the lie to all my earlier thoughts about not liking retro-look cameras, bought a Fuji X-E1. I bought it with the 18-55 lens, but although they're sold together as a kit, you wouldn't describe it as a kit lens in quality. Genshi has written several posts about this camera which are worth looking at. PM me if you're coming through Northamptonshire and have a play with it if you're interested!

Very pretty, Keleko. It reminds me of being in California, where Spring comes much earlier than it does here in Slovenia (and where there are plenty of Victorian homes like the one in your picture). Thanks for giving those of us still in the throes of winter some light to see at the end of the tunnel!

Glad I could help out. :) That photo was taken in the historical Inman Park neighborhood in Atlanta. Many of the houses like that fell into great disrepair in the 60's-90's. In the late 19th and early 20th century it was one of the wealthy districts of town. One of the houses in the neighborhood used to be the home of the CEO of Coca-Cola (the Candler family), and the basement of the mansion still has the walk-in vault where a copy of the secret formula for the drink was kept.

And now a gratuitous kitty photo. ;)

What camera/lens did you both use? Great photos!

Thanks orangeillini14.

I'm using the Nikon D600 with a 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII for most shots these days.

Here's another shot of a Blue Jay (coming in for a landing). You may or may not know that these jays are very fast movers but the Nikon combo handled it well....a very good camera and a great lens.

Pelican @ the Onkaparinga Estuary, South Australia

Great shot John. I don't know about your location in Adelaide but, as a country, you guys have some very cool and interesting wildlife. Hope to see more.
