I agree that the leaf is distracting. If i had some more powerful editing tools than iPhoto I would try to take it out.

You don't necessarily need "more powerful editing tools"... just take more care when you're composing the pic. Getting it (more-or-less) right in the camera saves a lot of work later... :)

Really like the grass here. Although I rarely see a sunrise or sunset that I don't admire, I feel that the grass adds an important 3d element to a beach sunset shot. Where is this, BTW? Northwest Florida’s Gulf Coast?

Greg

Good guess. I'm right at the eastern border of Henderson Beach Park in Destin, FL. I wanted more than just the sunset over the water, so I searched out some sea grass that I could use in the foreground of the pictures.

Morecambe Bay

Seeing the comments re Doylem's shots of Morecambe Bay. I visited the area a couple of years ago... and the fear of God was drilled into us not to wander out on to the mud flats. Apparently there are local guides that take people out for Guided walks. Being in the public broadcasting field, I can recall the day when news broke, in Canada, that 25 Asians drowned when they were caught by rising tides and unscrupulous employers. It made headlines around the world. These signs dot the bay. Just thought I'd post this because it brings back great memories of my one and only trip to Britain. Loved the footprints John!

One good beach sunset deserves another. I had a difficult time picking today. If you want to see the whole set, it is linked here. Flickr

Had a winter storm come through last night/early this morning, we don't get many winter mix storms here. Shot this with my iPhone.

Let's see if that works.

Either way, it's a shot with my P&S of a street in Chicago. It was taken while I was deciding that I liked photography and so prompted me to start learning more.

Nice! I can smell the charcoal on this one!

There seems to be a bit of a fog thing going on today, so I'll throw in this one that I took with the iPhone while walking the dogs last Tuesday morning. Of course, the fog didn't look so beautiful when I got to Heathrow airport for a flight later that day and was delayed for two hours ...

Like many others here, I really enjoy your urban B&W photos that all tell a story. Just out of curiosity, what lens are you using and what f stop settings, as a rule, do you use to capture your subject(s) in focus and all else subtlety a little blurry. I really enjoy your artistry and technique and am hungry, like many who visit and contribute here, to learn to get better and grow as artists Keep sending your work.

Thanks! I use either a 35mm or 50mm prime (full frame). I usually shoot wide open unless I'm trying something different. Just a personal style, but a lot of people like to shoot at f8 for street photography because everything happens so fast and there's a better chance of a focused frame.

I'm usually at f2 on the 35mm or f1.4 on the 50mm. The slightly blurred background comes naturally with the wide aperture and a short focal length. Longer focal length will probably result in a pretty blurry out of focus area.

Hope that helps :)
