@gnd, just amazing colours again.

Thanks! It's easy when the nature cooperates :)

Here is another one from the same day:

A great example of a photo that breaks the 'rules' successfully. Ordinarily it's advisable to avoid a centered subject because centered subjects tend to result in static compositions. In this case, the angle of the moving bishop injects some nice dynamism and gets the eye moving around. The many echos of tone and form really help to tie together the two sides of the photo, so it doesn't break apart, either (another common consequence of centered subjects). I even think the harsh bokeh works here, since it echoes the glassy, reflective chess pieces (instead of merely being a foreign, distinct element that is competing for attention). Really nice photo!

+1 for me... I love the way the light plays on - and through - the translucent chess pieces. A perfect shot for a 50mm lens. I see a lot of pictures, with 50mm lenses, wide open, where the point of focus has been nothing in particular. This shot demonstrates how to control narrow depth-of-field for a purpose.

Thank you so much for your comments! I assure you though, most of the things you've talked about were a fluke, but I've learnt a lot from your comments after the fact :)

I got up at sunrise for some pictures at Stone Mountain park. The shot below is a pond along the golf course. I saw it as I was leaving and turned around to make the shot.

The rest of the set from my morning photo session is on Flickr

Everyone sick of castle photos yet? :)

If so, you'll be glad to know I've almost exhausted this series :)

This one is Harlech castle as viewed from within town.

Compelling action shot. I have always been a fan of your surfer shots. A little more fill light in post would pull this one up a bit. Is that alge that turns the crest of the surf green?

I like this one better than the previous shot from this area. Something about the detail in the surrounding land appeals to me. Great use of beautiful light.

Today at Loughrigg Tarn...

What a wonderful photo to wake up to, beautiful light, reflection, colours and composition.
It has some really nice touches - the small blue reflections and the silhouettes of the trees, and the shadow on the top of the mountain, it feels like it 'models' the mountain it a whole lot better.
Love it! :)

Thanks, but I think you may have me confused with srf4real regarding any previous shots :), I too am a great fan of his surfer shots.
I think you may be right, it could be a little dark (thanks peeps, definitely calibrating now...).
The green isn't algae, our waters are very clean, for this specific shot it'd be the large mass of water behind the white wash and some sand lit by the late afternoon light. Sometimes if it's picking up a lot of sand the waves turn brown, interesting in the late afternoon light. WB needs fixing though.
Thanks for your comments Dale :)

Service No. 2046 of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. Killed in action somewhere in France on April 23, 1917. He was 23. No known grave. My great uncle.

It was a magnificent display of trained and disciplined valour, and its assault only failed of success because dead men can advance no further.

Great timing!

Once more a wonderful story telling picture.

Some days the sky is truly amazing, we had one of those sunsets last year. I had to leave my work to go and snap a shot or two myself.

What a wonderful portrait. Nicely done sir.

Here is mine for the day. These guys were putting on a heck of a show the last couple of days in the Narrows just the down town dock. I have got to get a sharper lens. This 55-200 mm just isn't doing the job I wanted, but I am happy with a few of the capures I was able to get...

On another note

I have to say Mr. Beck that this is an image I have had to stop an look at a couple of times. Intriguing shot. :D

Thank you kindly. I have some new stuff from a shoot with my wife. I have been neglecting photographing her lately because of clientele. But her photos are something different entirely. I used my studio strobes, well one, outside for the first time at night with my wireless trigger. I am intrigued to see some comments on what you guys think because I know at least one or two of you are strobists. Anyways I will probably have a pic up later tonight, thanks for the compliment!

Happy Veterans Day! Just going through some old family photos. Even though I didn't take this thought it was appropriate for the day. Scan of original photo was bw and 2" x 2 3/4". "The Greatest Generation", and indeed they were. Thanks Dad and to all the vets, past and present.
