Here's one from just after a big summer shower a couple of months ago. The clouds looked insane! The only thing I've done to this photo is bump up the contrast and saturation levels to better match the actual colours of the sky.

Time to call Ghostbusters?

Meanwhile, a B747 kicking up lots of water from the runway:

It is Qantas B747-438 VH-OJO in the colour scheme for the Rugby World Cup.

Caused a lockdown of East Carolina University yesterday. Officials thought it was a rifle, turned out to be an umbrella. The lockdown lasted 3 hours.

LOL

I go to ECU so I received an email about classes resuming (didn't know they were halted). I have been to the campus a few times but I take my classes online.

Thought this was kind of neat .... much like the infinite reflections from 2 opposing mirrors...

"New" Lens

I was not planning on spending any more money on camera equipment this year but I stumbled across a pristine, nearly new Canon 100mm Macro f/2.8L IS USM lens from an estate sale and the price was too good to pass up. The previous owner was a young man in his early 30's who died unexpectedly and who had a huge camera and lens collection of top of the line lenses. So I'll try real hard to thank him every time I use this lens. We had a cold front and snow storm move through last night (I got the lens yesterday), so I ventured out into the back yard and played a little until my fingers began to tell me it was time to get back inside. Here's one that I took (hand-held):

I participated in a photo meetup at Fernbank Museum last night. They had a "Martinis and IMAX" night as well as Salsa dancing. The light was low (very low), but I tried to make use of it as best I could. We couldn't bring tripods because of the crowd and dancing, either. I did get some shots of people and of the Darwin exhibit that's there for a while. I need to go back with a tripod for some more of the Darwin exhibit (and actually spend time reading through it).

I asked this lady to move so the light below was on her face. The object to the left is part of a dinosaur skeleton leg.

You hit the lighting just right on this image , the building lights are just coming on and the sky's not totally dark . Too bad all that scaffolding is in front of the Cathedral . Didn't notice it last time I was in the area ( maybe 2 months ago )

Unfortunately the morning sky was relatively cloudless and we were leaving the area that day so no opportunity to go back for a second try. :( I did crop part of a tree from the left-hand side of the shot-it really didn't serve to "frame" the subject. Note the Washington Monument in the background.

It's difficult to get a decent shot there no matter the sky- I've probably tried about 20 times with a 6x6 TLR. I had an office for a few years that overlooked there- nice big corner office too- my last thought was to try a starry night and lightpainting, but I never got around to it.

Your images of the DC area make me want to revisit some shots I've had in my mind- biggest being the Korean War Memorial in the snow and the fog.

Never mind the dinosaur leg... she's gorgeous... ;)

I'm not usually a fan of making big changes after a pic has been taken... but I'd be tempted to play with the 'content aware' brush in PS, and darken the background on the left side. The purple patch, top, and green circle, bottom, distract the eye from the soft lighting on her face and her natural expression. Worth a few experiments, I reckon...

I totally agree, the Korean War Memorial in snow and fog would be amazing. We have had another contributor to DP who took some shots at night, but snow and fog would be even better. The Memorial has a surreal feel as it is. I got the the same feeling when I approached this as I did the first time I visited The Wall (Viet Nam Memorial) many years ago. I did not want to talk or make any noise. I kept whispering to my wife even though everyone around us were chattering away at normal level. It was as if I was on sacred ground.

One more photo with my new lens:

Bombardier. Subway Train. NYC.

Thanks. The scaffolding did get in the way of a more complete shot. My first time to NYC. I was grabbing handheld shots on the fly continually adjusting metering. Only had a few days in the city. Man, what a spot !

Mine for today.

A subway Train whizzing past... somewhere underground.

The Wall is amazingly appropriate, and I almost cried my eyeballs out my first trip past it. It made me amazingly grateful that my dad survived Vietnam.

When I was assigned to the White House, one of my soldiers failed his PT test, and during remedial PT sessions I'd sometimes run him down to the wall, walk through there, then run down the reflecting pool or across Memorial Bridge. I never really could get him to run up the Lincoln Memorial steps though.

My first vision of the Korean memorial is the platoon coming out of the fog- I think that's the killer shot, but then I think snow wouldn't be that bad- especially the second snowfall of two in a row, so the ground would be blanketed. I think I missed foggy again this year, but I'm hoping snow in the early new year will happen when I'm free and around there.

Awesome shots. The level of shooting here is definitely getting higher in that besides the usual suspects, there are more folks posting killer images.
